McCain: 'Obama Won't Have The Right Response' To Crisis

WASHINGTON (AP) - Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the U.S. as a way to usher in a McCain presidency.

The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."

SITE Intelligence Group, based in Bethesda, Md., monitors the Web site and translated the message.

"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

Mark Salter, a senior McCain adviser, said he had heard about the Web site chatter but had no immediate comment.

The message is credited to a frequent and apparently respected contributor named Muhammad Haafid. However, Haafid is not believed to have a direct affiliation with al-Qaida plans or knowledge of its operations, according to SITE.

SITE senior analyst Adam Raisman said this message caught SITE's attention because there has been little other chatter on the forums about the U.S. election.

SITE was struck by the message's detailed analysis—and apparent jubilation—about American financial woes.

"What we try to do is get the pulse of the jihadist community," Raisman said. "And it's about the financial crisis."

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden issued a videotape just four days before the 2004 U.S. presidential election directly addressing the American people.

Yeah, that's pretty strange too...

But their logic here (the Al Quaida supporters) makes a bit of sense -- McCain is rasher and more likely to get us into more violent foreign entanglements. They think that too much of that will help America collapse faster, which ... well, look at Iraq... it's at least partially true.

It's somewhat self-punishing perhaps because more wars would mean more would-be terrorists dying too, but as long as there are more people to replace them, they don't seem to care about that, and as Iraq again shows, US Middle Eastern wars also do a lot for their recruitment efforts... there was no Al-Quaida in Iraq until after we invaded, after all, and then it became a powerful force.

I wasn't trying to say "don't vote for McCain because of this"; it just seemed to be an interesting article... though I definitely strongly disagree with the Bush/Cheney style of rash, invasion-happy Middle East policy. Building democracy is good... peace-keeping in parts of the world that need the help is good... but invading countries without good reason is not.

Oh yeah, and this isn't the voice of Al Quaida speaking or anything, just people on a forum who support them (intellectually at least). Though it is telling that back in '04 Bin Laden released that video, which some people say helped swing some people to Bush... Al Quaida does benefit overall from Bush-style foreign policy. They flourish on war... we've managed to partially suppress Al Quaida in Iraq, but they and their supporters still a problem there and in many other countries from Afghanistan to Algeria.

In some regards, like Israel policy, our Middle East policy is the same no matter which party is in power, but Al Gore or John Kerry would never have started the Iraq War...

There's a lot of truth to this. US support for the Saudi, Egyptian, and Israeli governments were core reasons behind the founding of Al Quaida. But as a militant group, they do benefit from war... as long as they don't get completely destroyed of course, but that doesn't seem to be happening.
War of attrition is how the Jihadist wore down the Red army and the soviet union.

The most dangerous "sect of Islam" is the Wahhabist , Saudi Arabia should be treated like a enemy ,They are worse then china in regards to human rights. They have a chop chop square in Riyadh were they behead people and have a little drain in the ground for the blood to trickle down into.

Osama Bin laden was a Saudi and so were all the 9/11 hijackers.

The U.S has put itself in danger by continually to unconditionally support and fund Israel, Israel certainly is the most democratic and free country in the middle east but Jewish fundamentalists are just as barking mad as the Muslim ones, Look up Rabbi Meir David Kahane. The west bank settlers think they are doing a reconquest of the holy land like in the biblical accounts with Joshua.

They have tons of support from American evangelicals who think they need to back Israel and Jewish extremist in order to bring about the apocalypse.

Israel was formed by transplanting European Jews and resettling them into Palestine, For Muslims its a land grab invasion that they never consented too

Israel has been a anti Semites wet dream, Anti semetism would not be as high as it is globally if not Israel, The Arabian Jews the Sephardi were caught in the middle of this and were expelled from their countries as a result of Zionism initiated by the European Ashkenazim.
