I say this, When we canadians pull off an election we do it fast! The American elections seem to drag on at a turtles passe ,We could have two elections done and over with in the time it takes you to get just one through.

Our federal election in Canada is October 14th

Conservatives (tories)
Liberals(grits)
Libertarian party of Canada
Marijuana party (Although legalization will hurt my friends hash business, Don't ask)

Topics that would decide my vote

Position on Israel, Position on Iran, Afghanistan NATO mission.

Since Harper espoused support for the 2003 invasion of iraq , I am concerned of what action he make should "McCain or Obama" decide to go into Iran within the next four years, I will withhold my vote for the Tories untill I can have the guarantee that they wont support another ill fated endeavor abroad.

Dion (liberals), Position on Iran and Israel is also a mystery to me.

Libertarians, No chance of winning power but their positions on foreign policy are in line with mine.

Well that went well... Harper suspending parliament just so he wouldn't get thrown out for a couple more months and all... (It's not going to work, you're gone either way, this way's just taking longer... :))

Yeah, he's really taking every possible measure to delay what seems to be the inevitable - delaying two confidence votes which he would have lost, and then suspending Parliament altogether. In the meantime, the Conservatives have a lot of money to spend, so there's gonna be a flurry of attack ads on all the Oppositions parties. One of Harper's top advisers advocates basically kneecapping the Opposition, so things are gonna get pretty ugly from now until Jan. 21, when Parliament will reconvene and the Conservatives will deliver a revised budget plan. If an election's called after the Conservatives lose the support of the house in January, the Opposition parties won't even run any members against each other, effectively ensuring that the Conservatives can't get a majority anyways. The tories have basically been check-mated. So hooray! Our next government will probably be comprised of the Liberal party mixed in with the Socialist and Quebec Nationalism parties. How can anything go wrong?

... Yeah, a definite volatile mix there... but Harper isn't really a better alternative, so...

But yeah, anytime they're working with the Quebec nationalists it does make me wonder a bit. Are they going to make another attempt for succession? I think they said they won't for now, but it seems like it's always a possibility... I mean, Quebec is a nice place, I've been there like five times over the years (maybe more, it is right on our state's northern border after all), but I don't think it should be come a separate country...

Quebec hasn’t made any huge moves for separation recently, but it’s always in the back of everybody’s mind. With Quebec’s population, culture, and history, issues in that province tend to dominate how Canadian national policy is shaped. The Bloc Quebecois (the Federal Quebec nationalist party) is much more pacifist, anti-globalization, and anti-American than any of the other parties, and having them so close to Executive power will probably result in Canada’s policies being shaped even more in their favour.
