This is a very, VERY good article on Islamic extremism and some growing divisions within the movement, and one Dr. Fadl who, despite being one of the founding theorists behind Al Qaeda, has turned on Islamic extremism.

I just read the article in the paper version of the New Yorker, had me interested from end to end... it's from one of last month's issues, but is still definitely quite current. I won't quote it all, as it's very long. Just go to the site and read it. Highly recommended!

It's extremism, not religion, and it's sectarian violence, not a civil war! Get it right, or we're kicking you out of America for not playing the semantics game. Words define reality, as opposed to the other way around.
What do you mean? Did you read the article?
...

It was sort of an unrelated joke.
That's what I thought... and terms do matter, but 'civil war' and 'sectarian violence' both describe what's going on in Iraq, really. It's not an either/or, it's really both. :)

Same with the other... the issue in the Middle East is religious extremism.

Oh, and read the article.

Its the "supremacist ideology" thats scary, Part of what has stirred violent vendettas is history of brutal colonialism and dictators, They have this self pitying xenophobic mentality.

The U.S has not helped much, You have more bombs then your leaders have wisdom, You should know the history and background of a country before you rip it apart in a armed invasion. If wars were just soldiers vs soldiers nobody care as much,Unfortunately Modern warfare no longer works like the days of gentlemen quarrels, Its inevitable that civilians will die as a result of collateral damage and mayhem, There will be repercussions down the road for that.

I think we the younger generation who waisnt around to live through Vietnam and other conflicts. Most of us back in 2003 were stupid and naive for thinking that they could just go in and remove Saddam and within a year it would be over, The disaster of the war in iraq is Parallel to the soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Todays press are saying the exact same things the soviet press did for Afghanistan in the 1980's.

We need to cut our dependency on foreign oil, So we can distance ourselves from these bedouin religious wackos, Support Nuclear power the only viable renewable energy source.

I think we should not have interfered in 1991, It waisnt worth the lives and money, The Arabs including the Kuwaitis are ungrateful for the sacrifices we made, They lied and deceived us with bullshit stories like those disabled Incubators and slain children just to swindle us into coming to their aide, We should have force them to rid of Saddam themselves.
