According to Megaman 8, Bass is said like the fish. That suits me find. Stupid audiophiles... If you are going to SPELL it like the fish, say it like that! Don't spell it one way and say it like the word base is spelled! If you are so upset about it, spell it base!

Back on topic, it's been a while since I played using the original Megaman, but it's good to be back. Following the style of Megaman Zero, this game is frickin' hard (Burner Man and Dynamo Man in particular are frickin' difficult). The levels sometimes are hard enough to take away most of your lives before you reach the end (a whole lot of jumps seem to be REALLY extreme with Bass in mind, so the non-doublejumping of Mega Man could make them hard on ya :D.

Instead of being able to select from 8 bosses in any order, or choosing from a list of 4, then another list of 4 once the first group is defeated, you have another system. You have 3 bosses to start with, and when you defeat any of them, you open a path to some new ones, depending on which one you beat. I like it.

Unline Mega Man X4, the two characters don't get seperate abilities from the bosses, but they behave differently so it's fine. Bass can double jump, shoot in any direction, and can dash Mega Man X style (mainly to extend his jump, the dash doesn't get you low to the ground to slide under enemy attacks and into small passageways). Bass's Bass Buster fires rapid shots when you hold it down. They are weak, but it's like a machine gun effect. Megaman has his standard Mega Buster, which has the ability to be charged, unlike Bass's weapon, for more power. He can slide, which unlike the dash, gets you lower to the ground for dodging and getting into small areas. He can also shoot while moving, unlike Bass who must remain stationary when firing (so he can aim). He also has the power of the "thumbs up" according to the display of pics of special abilities when you select your character :D.

They recycled two Mega Man 8 bosses, Tengu Man and Astro Man. Fortunatly, they have different battle strats and powers this time so they are pretty much new.

So why is Bass fighting? Some robot managed to get concious thought (a miracle Dr. Light and Dr. Wily are still trying to figure out) and decided to overthrow humanity, by taking over Wily's fortress. So, Wily sends Bass to teach this robot "King" a lesson. Bass actually wants to because he desires to be most powerful.

Anyway, fun little game. I think only EdenMaster will even care about this though... The rest of you will pop in post comments about not being interested in a series that's been done to death, and leave :D.
Um, did you mean me there? Because you must know that I love Mega Man...

As for MM&Bass, all I've played is the SNES rom... and of course that one's only in Japanese because of how when it came out in '97 or '98 it never came out here... its great to see it get US release.

And though I do like the X series more, the classic ones are good too...
Nah, I was generalizing, I know others here love the blue bomber.
Next payheck, DJ ;)

Anyhow, as for Bass, I used to pronounce it "bass" when I first played Mega Man 7. Then I realized his Rush clone Treble. Bass and Treble, like in music, so I trained myself to call him "base". NOW you're telling me it really is "bass"? What of Treble then? I will continue to call him "base" because I think it's right, regardless of what the characters creators say!
:D Well, they should have spelled it "Base" if they want us to say it that way if you ask me. That goes for ALL speaker systems too! Stupid audiophiles, making up words like that... The English language already has accomidated you with base! Use that!

Heh, anyway that WAS an english translation that actually said it like the fish. However, it certainly counts, because in Japan his name is Forte, and Treble is named Gospel.

Rock, Roll, Forte, Gospel, Blues, Tango, Rush, Beat... Hmm, these are somehow related!
*suppresses urge to make All Your Base jokes*

:bang:
And then there are all of the bosses from Mega Man X5 whose names were taken from famous rock stars. Grizzly Slash (Slash from Guns 'n Roses), Duff McWhalen (Van Halen), Axle The Red (Axel Rose), and a bunch of others that slip my mind.

Audiophiles didn't make up the word. Bass refers to the lowest point in music, and is right below baritone. So blame all of those guys with the big white wigs that decided to call that really low note bass.

And yes I know that you were joking.
:D

Still, I don't quite think it should have been spelled "bass".

Oh, OB1, I never once noticed that (Duff McWalen is a huge stretch I think...). However, I DID notice that the Japanese names for all the MMX5 bosses are different. In the Japanese version, all the bosses have the standard adjective-animal format, like my name. To be honest I think it was rather stupid for them to change the names of all those bosses.

Oh and EdenMaster, I know what you mean by word training when you find out real pronouncing :D. I used to pronounce "Magus" with a soft a, until I actually heard the word and found out it's a hard a sound. I also used to say chocobo with soft o's, until Final Fantasy 10, where I finally heard it, and now I'm STILL correcting myself. I also thought Tidus (the ONE name not said aloud since you can change it) was said with a long i, since there are tides and water is important to his sport. Then, I got Kingdom Hearts (which is officially getting a sequal accoring to Square-Enix), and heard his name said with a soft i (but then again, they went with the Japanese version of Aeris' name (Aerith), which while accurate in one way, isn't very accurate as far as going with their old name changes, continuity).
It's not a stretch because it goes along with the theme of all of the bosses.
It would have been better, though, if they'd kept the X formula of boss names... the ones they had weren't as good...

Until I played FFX, I pronounced the first part of chocobo the same way as chocolate (chock-oh-boh) until I heard the correct pronunciation. Of course, I had been saying chocobo that way for almost a decade, so it's difficult to change now :).

Also, about Tidus, how is it pronounced now? I always pronounce it like Titus, is it some funky way. I do like the way they dance around having to say his name :D. Auron sometimes calls him "kid", one time he said "new guy", Wakka has used "buddy" a lot, and Yuna once said "star player of the Zanarkand Abes. The first time I played through, I changed his name, so I thought (don't ask me why) that they might actually mention his name if I left it as is. No luck there, of course. I always rename my aeons though :).

I'm a big fan of FFX, if you can't tell :D
Heh, I never change default names. In fact, if there is no default name, I scoure the net looking for it to see if it exists (that's how I found out the three main characters in Secret of Mana DO in fact have official names, in Japan anyway).

Tidus is said with a soft i. You say it Titus? That's a d in the middle! :D Anyway, it's said T(soft I)d(soft u)s. Teed us.
Oh and ABF, like I said, in Japan they DID keep the formula. Stupid translators...

Crescent Grizzly
Tidal Makkoeen
Volt Kraken
Shining Hotarunius
Dark Necrobat
Spiral Pegacion
Burn Dinorex
Spike Rosered

THESE are the real names. By sheer chance, they happened to use a bunch of actual Japanese words this time around. That may explain some of it...

...

That just sounds stupid!

I'm gonna do the same for him as I will for Bass!
Well it sounds better as tide-us...

And they probably did change the X5 names because some aren't english... though given some of the odd names they've used I don't see why it stopped them...
Boomer Kuwanger :D.

Can somebody please tell me what the hell a "Kuwanger" is? It sounds vulgar.
Uh... a word they made up that works well after the word "Boomer" in X-style boss naming?
:D

Good enough for me.
Well, actually it was a tad closer to "Tee dus". Just say the first syllable quickly, rather than drag out the "ee" sound. Oh well ;).

Boomer Kuwanger... That name really sounds...weird, and it always did :D. I think somewhere I heard Kuwanger is Japanese for bull, but that very well could be a rumor.

Someone ruined me... Now that my filthy riches are gone... I'm just filthy! Nobody wants that, NOBODY!
Checking my Webster's dictionary, bass has two pronunciations:

bass- this one has the long "a" sound, as in "yay!". But it is still spelled "b-a-s-s." It means, "Low in pitch," like a bass guitar

bass- this one rhymes with "ass." It is also spelled, "b-a-s-s." We use this pronunciation when we're talking about the fish.

If that doesn't make sense, go here
Yeah... I've aways said bass -- b a s s, bot bass -- b a s e, but who knows what its supposed to be... Mega Man games don't have speech...

Looks pretty much the same.... alright but I don't know about how it'll end up... those previews sure have been not that great. But its a 2d Mega Man game so I bet I'll get it anyway...
Um, ABF, try reading my posts... Anyway, I already said that Mega Man 8 DOES have speech. In the opening FMV, Megaman says "bass" the fish way. It's official!
Oh... right... I read that but it was a while ago... um, yeah. I never played MM8 of course since its on the PSX... so I wouldn't know that... :)

Anyway, that's good. A bit odd, though, given how the names are all music-related...
Even though Nintendarse explained (unnecesarily) that the pronouncing of bass the base way has a history behind it (was it spelled like that back then though?), I still say bass should be said the way it's spelled, ALWAYS, no matter the definition! Heck, as a kid I always said "bass" on the radio knob the fish way, and then someone said "it's said base" and I"m like "but they already HAVE a word spelled and said that way, why didn't they add that definition to THAT spelling? Idiots!" and I stand by that! I said "idiots" the mario twins flash animation way (which sadly is the funniest part of any of those animations) by the way.

Really, what were the formers of the dictionary thinking? Surely they could have just as easily made the musical definition of bass go under the word "base". Oh and, yeah they DID intend it the musical way ABF, they just pronounced it differently.
Okay, enough of my little rant :D. Sure, I actually think that word should be changed, but I'm about as serious about that as any comedian is about how society should change totally pointless things.

Anyway, I've beaten this now, and so onto my review. My score? I think I'll go as far as to say this is my favorite of all the original Mega Man games. This finally beat Mega Man V for Gameboy and Mega Man 7 for SNES (which previously tied for first)! Maybe it's due to not playing a new original Mega Man game since 8 (though of course the X series is pretty much an extension of the gameplay), but I really enjoyed this.

First off, this game was challenging. The only Mega Man game harder than this is Megaman Zero, which I still say is the hardest Megaman game yet. The last stages really push ya, what with me beating what I THOUGHT was the boss of a fortress stage only to find out that giant tank was a MINI boss! I love it!

As far as the look, they cut the sprites and background images from Megaman 8 and pasted them right in here. That impressed me, MM8 being a PS1 game and all, but then again the SNES was capable of more than was fully used in it's lifetime, so the GBA being more powerful is easily capable of that, and it's all just 2D stuff anyway. MM8's Megaman is my favorite looking Megaman (then again, I have stubby mcpotbelly from NES/GB and his one SNES appearence to compaire him to, so basically I'm saying I like the MM8 version better than the MM7 version), so it's nice to see him again. They even put in the green devil from MM8 (you know, the standard slime or lego block monster from old games that could divide and fly around), but with all the frames of animation that had in the PS1 version, he was somewhat less than animated transferred here, so sadly he just stood there, not once dividing and flying across the screen. So inanimate... Oh well, his being there at least was nice.

The music? All good stuff. Some of it was familiar old tunes, a lot of it was new, all of it standard style. The sounds got the job done. Some were from MM8, some from MM7, some new.

Then there is the pure nostalgia factor. Like most games these days, you had a nice collecting spree you could go on when you got bored or frustrated with the normal quest. King managed to steal many CDs, containing everything on specific robots, from schematics to programming (though you only get to see some fanservice info on them :D), and you are given the submission of getting all that data back. There are 100 in all! I loved finding all these CDs! It was a fun quest not only finding them hidden across the land, but also reading the data on the robots they contained. They have ALL the robots of the original series (MMX, being in the future, is the series not mentioned at all, but hey, that's for the X series to deal with!), and I say that including the spinoff titles, like the Megaman World games (for Gameboy, the ones that reused all the NES game robots until 5, where they had original planet based bots), and even the bonus bosses in the battle mode of the Genesis Wily Wars game with remakes of Megaman 1 2 and 3. Everyone is in here! They have descriptions of them, a cool quote, personality traits, likes, dislikes, and a nice picture. For instance, Slash Man was built on Pluto's (Mega Man 5 boss) design. Tango can't stand Rush. Treble hates both Rush AND Tango. (Of course, since free will and emotions weren't truly invented for robots until X and Zero, this is all superficial personality stuff, like The Sims, except Megaman, Bass, Protoman, Duo, and Sunstar. Those are totally unexplained in their free will, the first three being strange flukes their creators are trying to find out how they managed to do, and the last two being from space made by ancient more advanced than Earth cultures.) These things are GREAT fanservice and really pulls it all together. This also means that the Gameboy games and the Wily's Tower quest in Wily Wars is ALL cannon stuff in the Megaman timeline, and not alternate reality stuff.

As far as gameplay outside those lovely disks and the difficulty, here goes. Megaman controls exactly like he did in Megaman 8. That only differed a bit from MM7 anyway, so eh. Loved that. Bass being playable really is great. While I would have liked to see Bass get different weapons from the bosses (stuff that worked more machine gun like to fit his weapon, while Megaman got more charge gun style weapons), his different abilities were good enough on their own. You have to switch between the two if you want to get all the CDs (it saves the CD database data seperate from the individual save files, so if you get a CD in one save file, it's there to see in the rest of them). Again, the shop is open for business. Auto does his best to make amazing things, and they went back to the MM7/later GB MM games style of shop. That's great, because I hated MM8's shop system. While MM8's system, had limited bolts you had to find, which was a fun quest in and of itself, the way it made you choose what to buy instead of being able to buy it all was very annoying (since you couldn't just sell stuff back and buy the other items if you wanted them instead later).

The powerups are also very cool. Megaman has Rush digging up stuff (the only way to get many CDs), beat dropping a shield that prevents damage, but depletes energy, and of course the many little upgrades to various speed and power ratings. Another little thing that some here have desperatly wondered about is Megaman's disdain of spikes (in EVERY game, spikes = death). First off, they are SPIKES, they stab, you wouldn't last a single hit either! Second off, they added a little powerup here. It lets Megaman survive contact with the spikes one time (and a little immunity for a few seconds after contact to make good use of). In fact, there is one CD where you NEED to use a spike guard to get to it. Bass gets some cool stuff, like being able to shoot through walls (I forgot to mention this before, only Megaman can shoot through walls, normally), shoot more powerful blasts (you can't have both, you have to switch between these two bits of equipment) and the coolest powerup in the whole game, TREBLE BOOST! (In the instruction booklet, which uses the Japanese names for everyone except Megaman and Bass for some reason, it's called Gospel Boost, which sounds pretty cool too.) Treble Boost summons Treble who fuses with Bass in an awesome flash of light and causes him to tremble with the very power coursing through him (like he's saying "FEEEL this power little punks!"), and then he can fly around in any direction while firing a powered up three way shot (that isn't exactly as rapid as I would have liked, but it's multidirectional and, well, decently strong), which is just plain fun.

For all these reasons, the fanservice, the challenge, the lovely duel character gameplay, the double fortress (which basically translates to a game with twice as many fortress levels as single fortress games), the classic shop system, and the awesome powerups, I finally decided this is my fave original Megaman game. Number? Pfft, I already said I now officially consider a number system moronic! By not including a number I force you to read my review :D.
But if you give it a number you could submit it to the TC Reviews Database... its certainly long enough... :)
Fine! I give it a wisker out of ten!
