Ya know, Goldeen never really made sense in SSB. I mean, a fish on land doesn't make sense anyway but those things could attack just fine. They should replace it with magikarp, and it can use a splash attack! Goldeen can be changed up so that it can splash into water or something and then be all dangerous. A goldeen's power comes from WITHIN, where the water cannon is.

I mean I'd suggest this idea, but the so called SSBB web log doesn't really have any way of adding comments.
The idea is to have a dud amongst all the powerful possibilities, just like having the occassional hammer that loses its head. Since there really aren't any Pokemon that do nothin (to my knowledge, I've never played), I guess they figured the "fish out of water" was the best bet.
I know what the idea is. Magikarp IS the "do nothing" pokemon. I mean, it's famous for it's complete lack of ability to ever do anything useful ever. Goldeen is not the useless one though. That one can actually fight. Magikarp is a much better fish out of water. It doesn't even make good food! It's all scale and bones! Besides, I think it would catch people off guard to see Goldeen actually use water cannon or somethin instead of spashing, and then actually see a magikarp, the king... karp... show up.

Here's some pokedex entries.

Red and Blue In the distant past, it was somewhat stronger than the horribly weak descendants that exist today.
Yellow Famous for being very unreliable. It can be found swimming in seas, lakes, rivers and shallow puddles.
Stadium Whoever its opponent, and however horrible the attack it receives, all it does is Splash around.
II Gold An underpowered, pathetic Pokémon. It may jump high on rare occasions, but never more than seven feet.
Silver For no reason, it jumps and splashes about, making it easy for predators like Pidgeotto to catch it mid-jump.
Crystal This weak and pathetic Pokémon gets easily pushed along rivers when there are strong currents.
Stadium 2 An underpowered, pathetic Pokémon. It may jump high on rare occasions, but never more then seven feet.
III Ruby Magikarp is a pathetic excuse for a Pokémon that is only capable of flopping and splashing. This behavior prompted scientists to undertake research into it.
Sapphire Magikarp is virtually useless in battle as it can only splash around. As a result, it is considered to be weak. However, it is actually a very hardy Pokémon that can survive in any body of water no matter how polluted it is.
Emerald Its swimming muscles are weak, so it is easily washed away by currents. In places where water pools, you can see many Magikarp deposited there by the flow.
FireRed It is virtually worthless in terms of both power and speed. It is the most weak and pathetic Pokémon in the world.
LeafGreen In the distant past, it was somewhat stronger than the horribly weak descendants that exist today.
IV Diamond It is said to be the world's weakest Pokémon. No one knows why it has managed to survive.
Pearl It is unable to swim against even slow-moving currents. It always splashes about for some reason.

The only redeeming value of this guy is it evolves into the terrible dragon Gyrados if you get it angry enough, at which point it will destroy everything it sees before calming down. Goldeen is useful right from the start, and evolves into a more powerful pokemon too (though not a dragon) called Seaking. Goldeen, I think, was a mistake to pick as "useless pokemon". Incidentally, Mew and Celebi, for being so rare, don't actually do much of anything do they? I think they could have some weird effects. Like, if Mew appears, everyone randomly switches places with everyone else. Or, if Celebi appears, the game starts slowing down and speeding up randomly for a bit.

Anyway, it just seemed a weird choice when they had magikarp to go with goldeen. Or, maybe they didn't have access? I guess maybe Magikarp had finally gotten it's own sitcom and there was some embargo on it's appearence anywhere else?

*slam* Teen: Dad! I'm sorry I stole the car and this train just came out of NOWHERE and crashed into it!

Magikarp: *splash splash*

Teen: Dad that's what you always say! *canned laughter*

Yeah that fish probably wouldn't even make a good sitcom character...
