Honestly, the Bears should be ashamed of themselves for such a pitiful self-destruction. They had so many opportunities to grab that game and run with it, and while I understand the game was rainy, for God's sake the Bears are an outdoor team and there is no excuse for five freaking turnovers.

Meh.
Yeah, pretty lousy Super Bowl. The TD run from the opening kickoff was the highlight of the game, unfortunately. Even most of the commercials sucked.

Oh, and another reason I'm starting to hate my fellow Americans: Every time the Colts player named Mohammad had anything to do with the ball, including score a touchdown, the crowd booed loudly.

"Mohammad?? He must be a terrorist! Living amongst our football players!"

Why?

What a lousy Super Bowl.
I was pulling for Rex Grossman mostly because I hate all the hype that surrounds Peyton Manning and all this garbage about how it's "his time" and how much he "deserves it". I'm pretty sick of Peyton Manning and his entire family. I was praying that young Rex Grossman would somehow win the game with a 0.0 QB rating. Also, being an Edmonton Oilers fan, it's only natural for me to root for the underdog. Too bad they ended up like basically every other underdog in history and lost (while I'm here I might as well say the Oil losing in game seven of the Stanley Cup pains me more than any failed relationship I've ever been in).

But the real winners of the game is the black community. How bout 'dem coaches? I wonder how black people will impress us next - will they learn how to read? Tie their shoes?

It only sounded like they were booing. Really, they were shouting his nickname, which is MOOOOOOOOSE!

Plus he plays for the Bears.
Well, that goes to show you how much I payed attention to that sorry excuse for a football game.
Rex Grossman LOL

Baseball >> all other sports (and as for football, it comes last of the big five sports (that is, Baseball, Hockey, Basketball, Football, and Soccer).)
You're so crazy, ABF.

Yeah, Mushin's nickname is Moose, and that was Bears' fans chanting Mooose.

I was so depressed after the game I almost felt like not going into work today. It's really tough when my two favorite teams haven't won since I was 4 years old (the Bears) and 99 years ago (the Cubs). The Bears played really horrible, though, and it wasn't just Grossman. I was pulling for Rex to have a great game because everybody, even people in Chicago, seems to be against him. He wasn't the reason they lost, though. The offensive line was letting everybody push them around and didn't give Rex too much time to throw. The running game, which is usually the team's bread-and-butter, sputtered out as well because of sub-par blocking and our #2 running back getting injured on his second carry. The defense was pretty bad too after the 1st series interception. Manning adjusted by throwing short passes, and the Bears failed to adjust back. Overall, the Bears played one of the worst Super Bowls I've seen, and they were still in the game in the 4th quarter because they kept holding the Colts to field goals. I just want to cry. :(
No. I'm a New Englander, and up here baseball is #1... (and college football isn't anywhere near as popular as it is elsewhere)
Baseball is firmly entrenched in either second or third place, depending on the NBA's fortunes. The only people who care are the fans of the same eight or so teams that go to the post season year after year after year.

Derek, Grossman played a horrible game. Horrible. It's clear that the Bears got this far in spite of Grossman and not because of him. They should have thrown Greasy out there, and they need to get ahold of a better QB because the Grossman experiment has been going on for years and there's not much to show for it. Three of the Bears' turnovers were his fault, and slippery ball or not, the Bears play outdoors and should be better conditioned for that sort of thing than the Ponies.
At the start of the year Grossman was hailed as the next Brett Favre. He started struggling, and ever since then he's been relentlessly criticized and told that he should be replaced. By EVERYBODY. Brian Griese?? There's a reason why he's the back-up and not the starter - he's Brian Griese. He sucks.

Rex won 15 games and led his team to the Superbowl. He'll be back. Do the Bears have any other option? Do they expect the Patriots or the Colts to GIVE THEM their quaterbacks?

If you mean baseball there, you don't pay attention to who wins, that's for sure... there have been seven different World Series winners in the past seven years, and not all "big market" franchises (or what are thought of as frequent postseason entrants0...

2000 Yankees
2001 Diamondbacks
2002 Angels
2003 Marlins
2004 Red Sox
2005 White Sox
2006 Cardinals
And he was the next Brett Favre, throwing interceptions in big clusters. And, Brian Griese couldn't have played worse last night. One of Grossman's interceptions was such a horrible floater that I could tell it would get picked as soon as it left his hands, and I was able to go get a beer and come back in time to see it caught by a Colt. Fact is, Grossman didn't win 15 games so much as he didn't manage to lose 15 games. Hell, last year Chicago won 11 games with Kyle freakin' Orton behind center, proving that the team is good enough to win 10+ games no matter who's handing off to the running backs. I'm a Steeler fan, and I know all about teams that overachieve despite having bad quarterbacks. It was the story of life until Roethlisberger came around. Once they finally drafted a really good QB, they won a Super Bowl. Chicago won't ever win until they have a better QB.
Grossman is an extremely capable quaterback. A quick look at some of his games this year proves this. The guy had some HUGE games this season and had seven games with a QB rating of above 100. Sure, he had a bunch of colossal fuck-ups, but the fact that he can pull of giant games easily nullfies all arguments that he is not a capable quaterback. The guy freaking amazes me. Who else can have a game were he completed 31% of his passes, threw for 34 yards, zero touchdows, and three interceptions - and still WIN? He's the main guy for the Bears, and I believe that next year he'll come back with something to prove and he will be dominant.

But not as dominant as my boy Vince Young will be.

All that does is prove my point; he won because the team around him is good enough to make up for his ineptitude.

Grossman had several good games, against poor teams. He also had some historically horrible games against some crappy opponents. A 10.3 rating against the freaking Cardinals? 1.3 against the Vikings, who had one of the worst pass-defense ratings in the league? A perfect 0.0 against Green Bay? 36.8 against Miami? Not one of these teams had a winning record. He's very streaky, very inconsistent, and the only reason his stats are as good as they are is because he plays for a very good team playing a very poor division in a weak conference. If the Bears played in any AFC division, they might win 9 games if they were lucky, and Grossman's play would be consistently worse. He's not special, and while I can't say he won't one day find his groove, so far he's done nothing that makes him look like anything more than a career backup.
You have to consider that this was pretty much his rookie year since he had freak injuries his first two seasons that kept him from playing. I'm not saying that excuses him for sucking in the Super Bowl, but the Bears played pretty bad overall so it probably wouldn't have mattered if he had a bad game. And the comparisons to Brett Favre are exactly why I support Grossman. Favre has the 3rd most interceptions in NFL history, but has a Super Bowl ring and will be in the Hall of Fame when he retires because of what he does when he's not throwing interceptions. Favre was Grossman-esque when he was a young player and made a lot of dumb plays so it's not stretching it to think that Grossman can pull things together as well. Brian Griese came in a few times this season and showed nothing special on the field. As Fittisize said there's a reason Griese is the backup. I'm giving Grossman another season to see what he's got, because right now I don't see any quarterbacks out there with more potential that the Bears could pick up.
I dunno about comparing him to Favre. Favre was an all-time great, not because of his yards and TD passes exactly, but because he was good enough to carry some below-average teams beyond where they should have gone. I can't remember any season where Favre held his team back (except in 05, but that whole team sucked). Grossman has been playing long enough to where he should be able to at least play with confidence and exhibit better decision-making.

I would give him one more year, but with pressure. Next year will be his fifth, injuries notwithstanding. It should be impressed upon him that he needs to play up to the level of his teammates. Vince Young was mentioned before, and he's a good example of what I mean; he wasn't that great a quarterback, actually pretty poor if you look at just numbers (he had one of the worst passer ratings among starting QBs), but he was a leader, played fantastically in the clutch, and single-handedly willed the Titans to at least four or five more victories than the team deserved to get.

I agree with that. When he had that bad 4 game stretch in the middle of the season he was pretty much told his job was on the line when Brian Griese took half the snaps in practice that week. He then came out and had his best game of the year against the Rams. I think a little pressure would do Grossman good next year, and I really hope he succeeds because the Bears can't start over at the QB position when they have a team with this much potential. Grossman did have good games against two good NFC teams in the Seahawks and Giants (well, they made the playoffs, but maybe they weren't good), and he played pretty well against the Pats even though they lost the game so he can play well against good teams. Check Favre's stats for his first two years and see how well he did. I can say fairly confidently that his team didn't make the Super Bowl that first year.
