Quote:I took the Wii home over the weekend and was able to put quite a bit of time into Zelda. There was what I would describe as a “bru ha ha” over at Joystiq when one of their bloggers claimed the game was a flop. He cited its terrible graphics as reason enough to dismiss it entirely. The response in the thread afterwards was heated with lots of people claiming that the graphics weren’t as bad as he claimed and that the game actually looked really good. Having played it all weekend I’m here to tell you that’s not the correct response.

See the problem is that he’s partially right. The game doesn't look very good. I don’t just mean it doesn’t look like Gears of War either, I mean it doesn’t even look good for a GC game and let’s be honest here that’s what we’re talking about. I’ve seen beautiful games on the Cube. Crystal Chronicles, Wind Waker and Resident Evil 4 were all incredible looking games. Twilight Princess can’t really compare to any of them. So he’s right about that, what he’s wrong about is everything else.

Even though the game doesn’t look all that great, it’s still Zelda and it’s fucking awesome. Our crew plays Gears of War every night and I had a hard time putting down my remote and nun chuck to join them. 1up has a minute by minute write up of the first ten hours of the game which seems ridiculous to me. I don’t know why you’d want to ruin such a great experience and it’s really not necessary. Maybe that’s that new games journalism I’ve heard so much about. Here’s everything you need to know about Twilight Princess:

-Playing Zelda with the Wii controller is super fun. -The game play is a blast. -The story is great. -You’ll never even think about the graphics while you’re playing it.

I recommend avoiding any of the extensive write ups about the game. I’m serious, Twilight Princess is too good to ruin it that way. Just wait a few more days and experience it for yourself.

-Gabe out

The question I have to ask is, what game videos was I watching before? Did they have to remove all the good looks because there wasn't enough room on the disk? All the videos I've seen up until now look AMAZING graphically. I mean, amazing even compaired to current gen games. All I've seen made me think "best looking game on the Cube".

So what are they talking about? What was I seeing? Did something change, or is there a major difference seeing it full sized?
First, the "critiques" in that Joystiq article were ridiculous... the "graphics" thing was mostly just that the game wasn't colorful enough or something along those lines. Huh?

But as for this one though, it's just not true. I have heard "TP doesn't have great graphics", but it's usually a case of people expecting next-gen graphics out of it even if they shouldn't. Compare it to current-gen stuff, and not next-gen stuff, and it looks fantastic... I agree, there is absolutely no way that this game looks bad compared to the best the Gamecube has to offer. They haven't removed any of the good looks... people just want better now, sadly...

And anyway, I've always firmly believed that art design matters a lot more than technical merit, and this game is no exception... the fantastic art design would shine through no matter what the technical level of the graphics was.

Of course, WW did have a very stylized art style while WW's is more traditional so some may say WW has better graphics because of its art design, but TP has amazing graphics and design. I'd post some screenshot examples if I wasn't unsure about which ones would be consider "not spoilers"... meh, I'll post these. I like some others more but these will do...

First review. 5/5, and they say the graphics are great, considering that it's just using the Gamecube's power.

PA must be drinking the crazy juice. There's no way that TP isn't one of the best looking GC games to date.
Gabe must be on that wacky tobaccy.
Indeed, it looks AWESOME in my opinion.
Two more reviews...

Very well done spoiler-free review, read it... (as you'd expect from the successor site to ZHQ...)

10/10, solid review, and long, but there are some spoilers.
I missed something, or I just dont understand. Or some people might actually have their head in their ass like i've heard so much about.

That Joystiq guy kept saying all the colors are muddy, so when he says graphics does he mean art style? Even then, the art style from what i've seen so far looks incredible, so none of this is making any sense.

Here's my theory, see I believe that some of these reviewers are playing Wii with the included composite cables and not component cables. There, in your ass with broken glass.
You're probably right about them using the included cables. I don't think you can buy the component cables yet and Nintendo probably didn't bother to send them with the Wii.
As I said, unless the videos are misleading (and apparently they are misleading in one way, they are high res than the final product), the game will look awesome to me. However, we'll all know for sure in a few days.
They are probably using the composite cables. The components are backordered online now, and Nintendo just started selling them this week so I'm sure most people don't have them yet.
I'll just pick one up at a store. I'm sure they are existant.
