Oh wait, they're just CPUs. Every CPU on the planet, that is... made pretty much irrelevant by the new Intel Core 2 line. They're finally here...

Hmm, not much solid info, but there's a lack of that precious hyper threading for now. Oh well.

What really got me was "virtualization technology". Looking that up, I'm interested. I could potentially have Windows 98 running in the background of Windows XP without significant performance loss.
The Core Duo is what they use in the Intel Macs right now, and from what I've heard from people I know who have Intel Macs it is pretty darn fast. The virtualization technology on the Macs is eventually going to be used to run Windows and Mac OS at the same time with the next release of the Mac OS this fall. I don't really see the point of running '98 at the same time as XP, but you could run Linux at the same time as Windows.

To run things that don't work in XP, of course... or to access a real DOS mode. Next time I upgrade I'd certainly like another install with either 98 or ME on the system.

Plenty of statistics that show how much faster it is than everything else out there...
wow that is awesome news. I can finally run my PC based music and sound effects editing software on my mac daddy, this pleases me infinitely, I dance now.

Um... now? But the Core Duo isn't out yet, I think... coming very soon (within the month for sure), but not quite yet...
Well, it's not the version of the Core Duo that you linked to, but the Macs do use a Core Duo.

Ah, that's the explanation. Apple's chips are Core Duo; this new PC line is the Core 2 Duo (and Core 2 Extreme). A bit more powerful, I'd expect... though obviously I haven't seen any comparison benchmarks.
