Well keep in mind PPG was originally a massive and blatant parody of anime, especially the "Sailor Moon" type stuff. This is basically the natural evolution of that.

The Japanese version of an anime-influence American animated series. There's a certain irony there.
Almost as ironic as "Pokémon Yellow Pikachu Edition", the game based on a cartoon series based on the original version of the game!
