For causing Nintendo to go dark for another few months.

Apparently, rumors are hitting that Nintendo's conference decided to focus on wiimote functionality and basically leave everything else a secret because of sony's half-assed attempt at stealing the wiimote. in an IGN interview with Perrin Kaplan, the kap'n says: Nintendo hasn't shown everything yet, still more hardware secrets that we're holding on to that will be revealed as we get Wii in to demo kiosks in stores. hardcore gamers stay tuned"

This is DIRECTLY because off Sony's 1987 tilting bullshit. I guess we're still going to wait for all the info. God knows if Nintendo showed something innovative sony would be right there to make a retard version of it.

Good news though, Miyamoto revealed that Wii will be playing DS games on the console either at launch or shortly after, i think we were spot-on with the SD card slot theory.
Okay lazy, I still need to know if the DS cards are in fact SD cards or if they are something else.

And oh well, so Nintendo's holding things secret for "a few months". I can wait for demo kiosks (kiosk is a funny word!).
yes, DS cards are SD cards.

kiosk makes me think of Jurassic Park.
so does 'paddock'
Kiosk makes me think of taking a ride down the white rapids of the bone spatter river. It also makes me think of Canada.
DS cards are not straight SD cards I'm pretty sure; they are similar, but not the same...
I just compared a DS game to my SD card for my camera, and they definitely aren't the same. The slots might be able to handle both, but DS games are quite a bit bigger than SD cards.

It's an SD card. It's just nintendo's SD card, you can put normal SD cards in the DS (I think), but you cant put DS games in a standard SD card slot.

good thinking GR :D
They're not SD cards, insofar as a compatible type. There are a good half-dozen different kinds of common memory cards, and the DS chips do resemble the SD more than any of the others, but it has twice as many connectors and is probably a hell of a lot faster to interface with since it's both proprietary and mostly read-only.
Basically lazy, from those pics, it looks like you CANNOT stick an SD card into the DS card slot. That is to say, it won't stick in the system, it won't connect to the contacts, it simply won't work. An adapter perhaps, or maybe if there is another size of SD card, but not THAT card in that picture.
Nintendo said that they are SD cards and hold about one gig. Now, making a slot that can hold standard SD cards and DS cards isn't difficult, but i'm more willing to bet that Nintendo will sell their own blank SD cards that will look an awful lot like DS games.

Obviously it's a proprietary format, in the same since that the Wii's DVD's will be proprietary but still DVD's, yunno? so you can only play it on what Nintendo allows.
If it's a propriatary SD card, then that pretty much defeats the whole point doesn't it? Which is, well, to be able to use the same card in other devices that use SD cards and store pictures and music on it, which in turn can be used in games like Mario Artist.

For all end user purposes, it's a new Nintendo memory card, and that's not really all that exciting. It's basically just like MS's proprietary memory cards for the 360.

But oh well. Here's hoping the thing actually does support actual factual SD cards instead of some Nintendo thing that can only be used on Nintendo's system.
Honestly, what's left to keep secret?
The flap. We still haven't seen what's hiding under that flap! My money's on a holoprojector.
DJ/ we're talking about a wi-fi system that plays multiple types of media that is online 24 hours a day and uses an internet browser as well as seperate download services and you just compared a 4 gig (max) flash media to a traditional memory card. You make words from your butt and I laugh at such words for they are farts.

the whole point to using flash cards is for downloading new content and games and that the DS games are flash as well, Miyamoto says that Wii will be playing DS games either at launch or shortly after, and the SD slots are the only thing that makes sense.
But it could hardly be called an SD slot if it's for Nintendo DS games. I don't care if they are based on the tech, I can't stick it in my Panasonic digital camera, WHICH I DON'T HAVE!

Yeah, I know that these cards would be much higher capacity and could be used for such thing (though there's no confirmation on that yet). I'm not about to argue that the extra capacity isn't great, it is. I'm just saying I want REAL SD cards. I want custom music, custom pics, and yes, some hack of Nintendo's security so I can use custom homebrew :D.
My laptop has one slot that fits two completely different sizes of flash cards.
DJ/ I think homebrew has the potentiol to becoming an in to pirating so i imagine Nintendo is making that very specific :D

homebrew should be available regardless of the SD slots though, there's USB in them thar hills.
Just a theory, but at the press con Wii sports had cartoon faces of Miyamoto and the gang. I'd say it's quite possible that you'll either have an eye-toy like device to scan your face in, or a very customizable character creator.

this would bode well pushing the immersion factor, especially with the rumor of the sports and symphony being a pack-in game.
