Crazy parody anime... all anime fans must watch this now. :) Magical Shopping District Abenobashi (Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai) tries, but doesn't manage to be half as good as this (though I enjoyed that show, it's clearly inferior by a good margin)...
For more insane comedy, you should also watch Dragon Half or Magical Play. Or Cromartie High School if you're looking for some dry humor.

MSDA was funny, but it relied to much on crude jokes and it just couldn't match Excel Saga's pace.

Yeah... its humor just is not on the same level. I enjoyed it, but I saw it before I saw Excel Saga... now it doesn't seem as good. :)

Excel Saga wasn't perfect, of course... there were a few not-so-good episodes (like the one with the humanized animals when Menchi ran away... not so good, IMO)... and I never quite understood the whole 'Hyatt bleeds a lot and dies constantly isn't that funny' thing (though the "let's constantly make Pedro's life hard" stuff was great...), but oh well... overall it was fantastic. It's really a show for anime fans, though... I watched it with the additional subtitles on (that explain the innumerable references to other shows, etc), and someone new to anime just wouldn't get so much of it...

Oh yeah, and it was kind of hard to follow sometimes... when you've got two tiers of subtitles for two people talking very quickly at the same time and reference subtitles on top of that, it's impossible to read it all in time, so I found myself rewinding and rewatching parts of it all the time... oh well, it made it make sense (or at least as much sense as this show makes), so it was worth it.
The pause button is your friend.
Yes, but sometimes it goes so fast you have to rewind back to the point where you should have paused, because you can miss some easily...
Yeah, that does happen. It has a faster pace than I've ever seen in a series of movie before. I don't know how they did it.

You know, Excel Saga would be even funnier if we were actual familiar with even half of the things being referenced.
Yeah, the what-they-are-referencing subtitles help, but they only help so much when you're unfamiliar with two thirds of the serieses they mention as references...

It could have been worse... what if they always talked as fast as they do in the episode previews... and what if they had multiple people talking at once most of the time? ... oh wait, they came pretty darn close to doing both of those? Huh... I wonder why it's hard to follow then... :D
