I just finished my 7th Star Wars novel, Tatooine Ghost by Troy Denning, and it was absolutely great. It served excellenetly to blend the prequel trilogy to the classic trilogy... and the writer blended it in with appropriate humor, good action, a few ironic twists... it gives a lot of great backstory about Shmi and Watto, and Kitster Bantai is a character as well... I definitely recommend it. It is second only to The New Rebellion by Kristine Kathryn Rusch on my SW novels list...

any other insight into Star Wars novels?

1.) The New Rebellion/K.K. Rusch
2.) Tatooine Ghost/Troy Denning
3.) Shadows of the Empire/Steve Perry
4.) Planet of Twilight/Barbara Hambly
5.) The Mandalorian Armor/K.W. Jeter
6.) The Truce at Bakura/Kathy Tyers
7.) Tales from the Empire/Various
Splinter of the Mind's Eye/Alan Dean Foster
-It's not exactly the greatest Star Wars book ever, but it is the first.

Specters of the Past, Visions of the Future, Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, Last Command/Timothy Zahn
-Some of the best Star Wars novels out there.

Jedi Academy Trilogy/Kevin J. Anderson
-An excellent trilogy about Luke setting up a Jedi academy on Yavin.

Vector Prime/R. A. Salvator
-Only a one-shot book by one of the masters of fantasy, but it's really good.

I own all of them except for the following (I haven't bought one in a couple of years, so I'm falling behind...): All of the ones under the EpII: AotC entry, the Lando Calrissian Adventures (all threeShadows of the Empire (though I've read it), ), Tattooine Ghost, Survivor's Quest, and The Unifying Force. That leaves, I think, 64 books that I have... oh, and I don't have any of the novelizations... I've seen the films, so I don't quite see the point.

That list is only leaving out three books: Tales from Jabba's Palace, Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, and Tales of the Bounty Hunters. TF.net puts them here

http://www.theforce.net/books/reviews/br_short.asp

with other short novels like the Dark Forces books (I don't have anything else on that page)... but I think they should be on the main chronology, as they show up there in the chronogical list of books that is found in each novel while none of the other ones on that list are. (Yes, they do have some non-canon parts in a couple of them, but so do the Zahn books, etc, so that doesn't rule them out I would certainly say.. oh, and I want this one (though because it's stories from some SW RPG guidebook I really don't know if it can be considered canon -- the RPG has contradicted other material (and I'd put the movies and books before the game... like the PC/console games, I'd say that some aspects of it (or them, for the videogames) are canon, and others are not. http://www.theforce.net/books/reviews/r_tfte.asp http://www.theforce.net/books/reviews/r_...newrep.asp)

... oh, did you want a a list? :) Copying from that page. X means I don't have it. My comments, if I have any, come after the title.

* Cloak of Deception by James Luceno
* Darth Maul - Shadow Hunter by Michael Reaves - want a SW book where the badguys win, other than the EpIII movie novelization? This is the book to get.

X-Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace (novelization)

* Rogue Planet by Greg Bear - continuing the plot the prequel novels tell (that gets picked up again in the NJO)...
* The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster

X-Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones (novelization)

X* Shatterpoint by Matthew Stover
X* The Cestus Deception by Steven Barnes
X* Medstar I - Battle Surgeons by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry
X* Medstar II - Jedi Healer by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry
X* Jedi Trial by Dan Cragg and David Sherman
X* Yoda - Dark Rendezvous by Sean Stewart (one of these last 2 is an e-book I think)
X* Labyrinth of Evil by James Luceno

X-Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith (novelization)

*

Pre-Star Wars IV: A New Hope

* The Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin - a solid trilogy, gives some nice insight into Han Solo's character... him as a child, the Imperial Academy, meeting Chewie, etc. Not perfect (it's got a 'romance' plot with a new character that works... decently, I guess... but not as well as it could have), but solid.
o The Paradise Snare
o The Hutt Gambit
o Rebel Dawn

X* The Lando Calrissian Adventures by L. Neil Smith (as a collection-novel) - I don't have them, but reviews are awful.
Xo Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu
Xo Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon
Xo Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of ThonBoka

* The Han Solo Adventures by Brian Daley - written in the '70s/early '80s, along with 'Splinter of the Mind's Eye'. Classics! Definitely recommended for anyone with any interest in Han and Chewie.
o Han Solo at Star's End
o Han Solo's Revenge
o Han Solo and the Lost Legacy

X-Star Wars IV: A New Hope (novelization)

* Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster - not as good as the Han Solo Adventures, and it's got some Luke/Leia stuff (it was written before TESB), but Luke fights Vader, so it's not all bad... :)

X* The Ruins Of Dantooine by Voronica Whitney-Robinson with Haden Blackman (IMO this one doesn't count and should be with the Jedi Knight books... it's canon, but a game-spinoff, not a true new story...)

* The Bounty Hunter Wars by K.W. Jeter - I really disliked this series. It ignored and destroyed most of the chronology set down in 'Tales of the Bounty Hunters (and for the worse, in every case!), which really annoyed me... I only bought all three because I try to, eventually, get all the SW novels... but yeah, they weren't good. Not that well written, not well set in the canon/chronology, etc, etc...
o The Mandalorian Armor
o Slave Ship
o Hard Merchandise

X-Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back (novelization)

X* Shadows of the Empire by Steve Perry - good book for one that also has a videogame...

X-Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi (novelization)

* The Truce At Bakura by Kathy Tyers - meet the Ssi-Ruuk Imperium!

* X-Wing, Series I by Michael A. Stackpole - Classic space combat series about Rogue Squadron. Lots of action... good stuff. :)
o Rogue Squadron
o Wedge's Gamble
o The Krytos Trap
o The Bacta War

* X-Wing, Series II by Aaron Allston - aka the Wraith Squadron trilogy. Not as good as the Rogue Squadron four-book set, but also worth reading.
o Wraith Squadron
o Iron Fist
o Solo Command

* The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton - the Force Witches! ... and Han and Leia get married. Yeah, she picks him and not the prince... shocking...
X* Tatooine Ghost by Troy Denning

* The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn - still maybe the best
o Heir to the Empire
o Dark Force Rising
o The Last Command

* X-Wing, Series III by Michael A. Stackpole - not as good as X-Wing Series I, but a continuation of the plot, so get it anyway. And it's not bad.
o Isard's Revenge

* The Jedi Academy Trilogy by Kevin J. Anderson - where DO the Imperials keep finding these superweapons/lost Sith masters/Super Star Destroyers/etc... :)
o Jedi Search
o Dark Apprentice
o Champions of the Force

* I, Jedi by Michael A. Stackpole - because no good Star Wars character is complete before they become a Jedi!

* X-Wing, Series IV by Aaron Allston - unrelated to the past X-Wing books, and set much later in time (this chronology doesn't have the dates on it, but time passes between serieses...)... Allston just isn't as good as Stackpole. Decent, however.
o Starfighters of Adumar

* Children of the Jedi by Barbara Hambly - the next three books are a loose trilogy, as they have some returning plot elements between them (such as some of the villains and story).
* Darksaber by Kevin J. Anderson - yep, it's a Death Star Variant...
* Planet of Twilight by Barbara Hambly - ends the 'trilogy'. Meet a planet where you can get Lightsaber crystals!
* The Crystal Star by Vonda N. McIntyre - the SW books had really started to get old... not a bad book, but coming up with credible threats has become a struggle for the authors. They manage it, again, but...

* Black Fleet Crisis Trilogy by Michael P. Kube-McDowell - and this continues the slide (though it's actually a well-done series). My main complaint with this one is that Luke searching for his mother (who she was, he doesn't know) is a major plot point, and of course it cannot be resolved... hopefully soon they'll write a book that finally ends it, now that the PT has been made (though it should be set AFTER most of the books that have been released!). Oh, there's also a lost fleet...
o Before the Storm
o Shield of Lies
o Tyrant's Test

* The New Rebellion by Kristine Kathryn Rusch - yeah, another sign of 'we are losing it with the threats to the republic'. Oh, the book is good enough, but... ANOTHER madman/warlord threatening the republic? Sigh...

* The Corellian Trilogy by Roger MacBride Allen - gives us a lot of history about the Correllian System (it's not normal, to say the least...). Good books! And for once the superweapon element works perfectly...
o Ambush at Corellia
o Assault at Selonia
o Showdown at Centerpoint

* The Hand of Thrawn Duology by Timothy Zahn - Zahn does great Star Wars writing. This is just as good as his first trilogy.
o Specter of the Past
o Vision of the Future

X* Survivor's Quest by Timothy Zahn

* New Jedi Order - read them all, in order. It's a linear series... they needed to shake things up in Star Wars, and definitely succeeded. I know it's a lot of books, but it's worth it... there are also some very interesting insights about the nature of the Force along the way, and a bunch of hooks to some PT books.
o Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore - starting it off with major character death...
o Dark Tide I - Onslaught by Michael A. Stackpole
o Dark Tide II - Ruin by Michael A. Stackpole
o Agents of Chaos I - Hero's Trial by James Luceno
o Agents of Chaos II - Jedi Eclipse by James Luceno
o Balance Point by Kathy Tyers
o Recovery by Troy Denning
o Edge of Victory I - Conquest by Greg Keyes
o Edge of Victory II - Rebirth by Greg Keyes
o Star by Star by Troy Denning - Major Character Death
o Dark Journey by Elaine Cunningham - I liked this one...
o Enemy Lines I - Rebel Dream by Aaron Allston
o Enemy Lines II - Rebel Stand by Aaron Allston
o Traitor by Matthew Stover - great book! (Jacen gets tortured... yeah... but it's done really well, and leads to some very interesting nature-of-the-Force stuff... oh, and Vergere is a pretty interesting character.)
o Destiny's Way by Walter Jon Williams - after so much retreat, defeat, and disaster, finally a chance for the galaxy to survive? Thus begins the final segment of the war...
o Force Heretic I -Remnant by Sean Williams and Shane Dix
o Force Heretic II - Refugee by Sean Williams and Shane Dix
o Force Heretic III - Reunion by Sean Williams and Shane Dix
Xo The Final Prophecy by Greg Keyes - I need to get these...
Xo The Unifying Force by James Luceno

Oh yeah, the other books of note (from the other lists)... short novels and short story collections.

X - Darth Maul - Saboteur -- James Luceno - e-book.
X# Dark Forces - Soldier for the Empire -- William C. Dietz & Dean Williams (I've read them. And yes, DF and JK are at least partly canon. (not all the SW games are...))
X# Dark Forces - Rebel Agent -- William C. Dietz & Ezra Tucker
X# Dark Forces - Jedi Knight -- William C. Dietz & Dave Dorman

# Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina: edited by Kevin J. Anderson - these three are great, I really like how they take a bunch of minor characters and make them into people, with stories... very interesting books.
# Tales of the Bounty Hunters -- edited by Kevin J. Anderson - ... though I hated how that stupid 'Bounty Hunter Wars' destroyed the Zuckuss and Bossk stories. (oh, and the first part of the Boba Fett story is most definitely non-canon. The other part (set later in time) is fine, though.)
# Tales from Jabba's Palace -- edited by Kevin J. Anderson - the sail barge takes some of these characters with it...
X# * Tales from the Empire -- edited by Peter Schweighofer
X# Tales from the New Republic -- edited by Peter Schweighofer and Craig Carey
I have the novelization of Caddy Shack...
Yes, quite comparable DJ...
Caddyshack was novelized???
You haven't been watching the new episodes of Family Guy?!!
No!!
I have the novelization of Caddy Shack...

Lol I was going to say! "Na-na-na-na" said Ty as he sinked another putt.

I wouldn't mind some Dark Forces/JK books... I love Kyle Katarn, he's the shit.
Actually, they made three JK books... :) Short books, but books (they're listed and reviewed in the 'Short Stories' section I linked above).
