I have moded my XP computer to look more like a mac. Thought you guys might want to see. ;)
Why don't you just get a Mac?
That's like saying "Hey, instead of a cel phone, why don't you just get a phone that doesn't work with ANY phone networks at all?", which is my way of saying COMPATIBILITY man!

And, that is impressive, most impressive.

I have been meaning to pick your brain of whatever computing knowledge you may have. I am what they call a data leech. I basically grow stronger and stronger by leeching onto smart people and extracting all useful data before casting them to the winds.

So um, tell me, in detail, what did you do to do things like, oh say, alter the menu's appearence? Did you actually alter it yourself, or use a popular editor type thing I am unawares of?

Saying this to the resident Mac person, DJ?... :) I mean yes, it's true, but Mac people don't care about such things I think... sad really, not being able to use much of anything for so long probably gets you into a (false, probably) mindset of "it can do everything I need it to"... and "Windows is stupid/evil" (also said by Linux people, though I'd say Linux is a better OS than MacOS...)... and yes, Windows is evil, but we have to live with it anyway if we want to be able to do anything interesting.

The nuts and bolts of it is bacially that I wrote a new windows shell using object desktop as a medium. And yes Mac OS style with Windows compatability was the modivating factor.
Get those quote tags ready...

What is it really that isn't compatible with Macs that we really can't live without. Yeah, the Mac game market is extremely poor when compared with PCs, but I wouldn't say PC games are essential to everyday life. I could very well say Windows PCs aren't compatible with Searchlight technology so you still have to hunt through folders or use a slow find command to locate files, but it doesn't matter because there are similar 3rd party search programs (although admittedly not as elegant) on Windows so you don't actually need to have Searchlight technology because you have something similar.

Not to bash your opinion, but I'd just like to know why since they are both built on a similar base.

Why can't you do anything interesting without Windows? I think Pixar does a pretty good job of creating interesting things without using Windows.

...And Don't forget that the windows Gooie is seriously laking in refinement :)
Where as Mac OSX and Lenux Gooies where dubed worthy of a plasma screen monitor at the apple store!

Because it runs on PCs... :p ... and doesn't have the MacOS look, I don't like that (windows don't all use a common topbar, there's a bottombar with a programs-list button, task-switching buttons, etc (you can put all kinds of stuff on it)... stuff like that. I just don't like the MacOS look, or how it works... I want a Start button for my application folders (though I'm not exactly a huge Start button fan, I'd rather use Tabworks... but I do like stuff like the quicklink buttons on the taskbar, and having Start-menu access to stuff like the Control Panel, Search, and some applications if I want to get at them more quickly.), a taskbar, etc...

As for Linux, it's pretty much configurable. My dad's PC (he uses Linux only (except for taxes, which have to be done in Windows)) has task-switching, showing if programs are running in the multiple windows (a cool feature), the Start-menu thing, quicklinks, a clock, and a some other stuff all on it...

'Find' works... yeah, it takes a while, but it's quite effective, if it has something to find that meets your criteria... but that's not the point, application -- and game in particular -- compatibility is. Sure, PC gaming isn't a requirement to survive, but no gaming is... it's all done for fun. And it's a lot of fun, and there are a lot of great PC games that mac gamers just don't get. And there sure isn't much of the other way (Mac games PC gamers don't get). And this goes for both retail and freeware titles...

I don't know why artists prefer macs, but if there's one thing I'm not, it's an artist... :)
Hmm, object desktop eh? I'll check into it. By saying "wrote" it suggests that some actual coding is involved and it's not just a "replace this image with this image" thing. Though, it could be like XML or something and it's basically just scripting a few small things... I guess I'll find out anyway.
Well, I guess I had that page up too long before responding...

Anyway, no, games aren't needed, but who cares? I don't NEED to watch TV but if I had to pick between just a moniter with a VCR hooked up to it or a TV that could play back TV channels, I'd always go for the latter. And also, I WANT video games. I'm not about to pick the Mac system because of some interface superiority or whatever. I pick my system based on how wide a selection of software I have for it.

See what I said about excuses they have to use to justify it? DMiller showed his there. :)
Why do taxes have to be done in Windows? Does your dad just not have the software for Linux, or something?

Object Desktop (and it's friends) is pretty cool. I never took the time to play with modding it myself, but I used a few of the pre-made themes and styles. Unfortunately It seemed to make my system unstable, so I don't use it any more.
Do they make any tax software like TurboTax for Linux? If they do, he doesn't know about them...
Jeez. Why go through so much work when there's <a href="http://osx.portraitofakite.com">this</a>. It's one single package that contains all the mods that make XP look like OS X. And all you do to install it is press next a bunch of times. And it's completely free! It also includes RKLauncher, which is my favorite of all the dock mock offs for XP. Have a lookie at mine.
Why go through the work? For fun! Figuring out how to mod your own computer is one of life's greates pleasures... for some people anyway :D. Sure a program that does it all for you is nice, that IS true. It's better. But, sometimes you want to see if you can do it on your own, ya know?
It's fun on Linux. Not so much on Windows, however. I DID go through a lot of work finding all those icons for my dock. In fact, I had to make two of them because I couldn't find the right icons I wanted. I made the NES icon and the lemon icon (which is <a href="http://ipodder.sourceforge.net/index.php">iPodder's</a> logo)

If anybody wants them I'll gladly share.
