Yes, but the X-Box's true girth wasn't it's depth or height, but it's massve footprint. Besides, the 360 is meant to be vertical, so size matters less.

I'd be interested to see if they turned those two systems sideways and we looked at them from that angle.

I don't care really. And also, I'm not sitting my systems on their sides. Too risky. I want that center of gravity LOW and SPREAD OUT.

But yes, for a console, it does seem a bit strange to want to have it up on end...

My computer is wedged tightly between my moniter and this other thing, also it's huge. But, I don't see any real advantage to having this over having a horizontal PC, the kind you'd sit your monitor on top of. This thing looks a lot narrower, and I've seen how easy it is to tip over a PS2 for example when it is on it's side. Also, I am hesitant about having my optical media spinning perpendicular to gravity...

That's because you are in a situation where either it's nice and tucked away or you don't have to worry about small creatures jumping around it. Neither can be said to be the case for me.

That really isn't much smaller is it? I couldn't really tell how big it was until seeing that comparison shot. It won't really affect my purchasing decision, but it's interesting to know nonetheless.

The PS2 is quite stable if you use one of the vertical stands. That helps immensely. Without it, you're asking for trouble. I used to keep my PS2 vertical, but latel in the interest of space I have it placed on it's side, with my GameCube on top of it.

On it's side? Oh wait... you consider the bottom the side because you got used to it didn't you?

Yeah, that's the thing. I really don't see how changing it's orientation saves space. I actually save more space horizontally. I can't even FIT the things into my entertainment center vertically. The shelves, they can't be removed, ever.

One other thing, I really don't see myself spending MONEY just to get something vertically oriented. :D

Ooooone more thing! Isn't vertical orientation a leading cause of laser alignment problems in the PS2?

Well, I guess it depends if you're putting your consoles in an entertainment center or somewhere else... I just have them on the floor, for instance.

I have a desk/bookcase thing that all my consoles are setting on. It's served me well over the years.

I just have the N64 and Cube, so the systems go on the floor and the games and extra controllers and stuff go in a large blue bag that I use to carry them around between places. We don't really have some kind of 'entertainment center' thing to put the consoles in anyway, so it works...

I just have my TV on top of one of my dressers with the consoles next to it, and the only thing above it is my ceiling. So, unless the next console is going to be about 4 feet tall when vertical, I'll be fine. I prefer it that way because, with my setup, it does save space. The only reason I have it horizonal now is because I just wanted to change the way my setup looked after I'd had it that way for over two years.

About what side of the console is the bottom and which is the side, I really don't think there is a definitive right and wrong way to stand the console. All it really depends on is how you prefer it. Though, most of the time when I see ads or pictures of a PS2, it's almost always vertical, so I've just come to consider that the appropriate way to stand the console. Appropriate, but not necessarily the right way to do it. You could dangle it from the ceiling with fishing wire if you so choose.

At any rate, no biggy. On your dresser? I can't imagine doing that without neck strain. Most entertainment centers are a lot shorter than the average dresser so...

I have to turn my PS2 on its side to get it to work.

Most of my playing time is spent laying down on my bed, which faces the dresser in question which is somewhere in the vicinity of 4 and a half to 5 feet high. A couple of pillows behind my head equals perfect eye-to-TV viewing. Neck strain has never been a problem.
