Yes, online.

Quote:During the pre E3 2005 press conference, Iwata revealed that Super Smash Bros. would appear online for the launch of Revolution. Currently no other details were revealed.

Theoretically, the game could support more than four players online, but due to gameplay concerns the game will likely be limited to the usual four.

The name of the title (Super Smash Bros. Online) is not official.

How anyone could be dissapointed with E3 given news like this is beyond me.

Planet Gamecube
I can't believe this surprised you. We knew that Rev would be online, and we knew that there would be another SSB. It's great to get an official confirmation, but I knew this would happen.

I'd be exicted if they showed a demo reel, or maybe even a damn screenshot.
I would rather have Mario Kart Online for Rev, but this is a close second.
I'm 100% positive that we will see Mario Kart online for Rev. In the meantime, enjoy the DS game online. :)
OB1, you're not happy that Nintendo finally confirmed what we'd all be hoping for for months or even YEARS? Also, it shows that Nintendo is really committed to bringing gamers online. I think that counts for something.
Of course I'm happy, but this is not news to me. I expected to see at least a little demo reel of Rev games at the show, or maybe some indication of the revolutionary aspect of the system.
One theory: Nintendo figured that anything they did would be completely overshadowed by Sony [and possibly MS as well], so they're planning on opening up Space World '05 for the break-out party.

*crosses fingers*
This still pisses me off. I would hate to have to wait until Spaceworld, especially now that I've given up a lot of hope that the Rev will not, in fact, be a revolution.
If they release that information too early, MS and Sony will copy them. You know that's what they were thinking!

Anyway, even if we did know RIGHT NOW why the Revolution gets it name, we'd still have to wait over a year for it to be released. *knowing is half the battle, though!!*
If it's something like a unique controller the competition can't exactly copy them so soon. They could at least tell us that the revolutionary stuff is yet to come. I feel so crushed right now.
You'll feel better once you play Super Smash Brothers Online.

Quote:I feel so crushed right now.

Nintendo did say that there was a reason they didn't show us the controller, keep that in mind.
No they didn't. They just said that they would show it to use "later".

Quote:You'll feel better once you play Super Smash Brothers Online.

That does nothing for me. I at least need screenshots to hold me over until it comes out!
Quote:That does nothing for me. I at least need screenshots to hold me over until it comes out!

Well too bad, because there aren't any! But there should be.

Quote:No they didn't. They just said that they would show it to use "later".

I thought I remembered reading that somewhere, but now I can't find that article.
Quote:Well too bad, because there aren't any! But there should be.

Yeah, you sure showed me there. Erm It's so great that there aren't any screens...

WE SHOULD BE SO THANKFUL.

Quote:thought I remembered reading that somewhere, but now I can't find that article.

...
Here it is:

Quote:We waited...but it never came. In his Revolution presentation the Nintendo president teased the audience about the console's controller, hinting it was what was so revolutionary about the machine. Unfortunately, he stopped short of giving more details, further or noting its wireless ability, or showing the actual joypad off.

We would see it "later" he promised. How later is unclear at the moment; if it was ready for the show logic dictates they would have presented it at the conference. Since it wasn't, we can assume we have a wait on our hands.

Fuck. This better not be bullshit, Nintendo...

Oh and read my above post.
Okay, I read it.
*whistles*

so who wants to make a bet that Nintendo will show off more Revolution stuff before E3 is done?
I'm with both of you here: while a confirmed SSB online Revolution game is great news, I was still hoping for more. It's at least nice to know for certain that it exists, though, not to mention as a launch title.

Of course, SSB: Melee was slated as a launch title too, wasn't it? It was released a month or so after GC's launch, though, so that's at least close.

I'll be sorely disappointed with Nintendo if these are the big guns to revolutionize the industry that they've been hyping us up about. The console doesn't deserve the title "Revolution", unless there's something extremely innovative about their next controller. Please, Nintendo, don't hit a new low in shamelessness.

I'll bet they do. Yes, it's a little early to make judgments, but honestly, if they were going to report something huge, I think they would have done it by now.

They might show some things behind closes doors, but I'm not expecting anything more than what we've already heard.

Man, I hope you're right. I really hope that you're right.
Well lets just say a little birdie told me.

Apparently Nintendo is doing this all in the name of hype. Did you see the Metroid Prime 3 shots in the video? It was quick and odd but apparently that's from a longer video that either shows more of Metroid Prime 3 or perhaps other Rev games. The fact is that Revolution is a full year away, probably more. And Nintendo wants people to stay focused on GC and the handhelds before all eyes and attention are on Rev. The pre-3 conference was a pat on the back for GC to get the info out there that GC isn't dead and Nintendo knows what they're doing. Nintendo showed alot of confidence with GC, with Zelda backing everything up.

It only makes sense that you would show your masterpiece game that is soaking every ounce of GC's power to make beautiful graphics and leave a nice gap before you show your next gen graphics that will either match it or blow it away. Nintendo needs hype for Zelda right now, not next gen hardware. They just need to show people it exists and that the idea of it kicks ass. If they showed the whole bag of Rev, TP would have been a yawn fest and swept under the rug quickly by consumers more interested in the next gen hardware (and more importantly, pics and videos)

What Nintendo is doing is extremely smart, it's called pacing yourself and i've never seen it done so boldly. With an entire week to go, and with all eyes on all 3 major companies with their current gen and next gen in a grey area, Nintendo is definitely playing the table and holding an ace waiting for the right moment to show, I think.

Nintendo may opt, as suck as it is, to not show Rev at all in the hopes of gaining more hype towards current gen. Hardcore XBox and PS2 fans are pre-ordering Zelda right now, that's fucking huge and it's great news for Nintendo. They use E3 as a platform to push current gen and wait a few weeks/months to show off Rev. It's a possible scenario, one tht even makes sense; But Nintendo knows what we want, and they're pulling our strings for a reason.
Bah, I want my damn Rev demo reel. I really hope they show it before E3 is over...

Nintendo does need to get people exicted about the Rev, especially after Sony's amazing PS3 presentation. And the PS2 still has tons of big games coming out this year, so it's no different for them than it is for Nintendo. Well, almost. They don't have Zelda. But nothing can destroy the excitement over Zelda. That game is playable at the show. A couple-minute long Rev demo reel would not diminish the excitement over Zelda.

Also... that bastard Reggie promised that Mario 128 would be at E3. I hate Nintendo for pulling all of this stuff from the show.
Patience, OB1.

Can you honestly say that people are more interested in a PS2 game more than the PS3 demos and projects right now? :)
PS2 doesn't have Zelda. :)

I hope you're right, lazy. And I hope you're not just speculating.
Yes, patience... it's a little annoying, but really, it's not THAT bad. And lazy makes a good point about Revolution taking away from the GC... I know, MS and Sony have big upcoming titles too, but Nintendo looks at things differently and from their perspective this makes sense. And they've said something, so it's not nearly as bad as if we knew nothing... it's just screenshots. We'd look at them and say 'yea' or 'nay', and go on... and it's a year away.

Now, I want information before next E3, that's for sure... and I wish Nintendo wasn't this secretive. But they are, and we should all be used to it by now.
Nintendo tried with with the GC, remember? And look how well that worked. People are talking about these systems, and word is slowly getting out to the mainstream. Nintendo cannot afford to be out of the equation for long like last time.
When did Nintendo have Spaceworld? Wasn't around August or something like that? If so, it would provide the perfect opportunity to fully unveil the Revolution. The GC gets in last day in the sun and the Revolution is revealed without having to compete directly with Sony and MS.
But I don't want to wait until August... *cries*
And that's why they said SOMETHING -- it's not like there is nothing at all to talk about. Just not as much as we wish there was.
They pulled all of the awesome stuff that they were going to show.
Maybe they'll tell us more about what the whole "indie games by individuals with a big idea" is all about.
Maybe...
Yes, so we can see if it's a point with substance (which would be awesome) or just marketing-speak...
It seems kind of odd that they'd just throw something like that out there if it wasn't somehow relevant to the system.
I was neither surprised nor did it seems completely expected. What it was to me was confirmation. I had my doubts considering Nintendo's decades long history of how they deal with online (yes, they've been abandoning it since the Famicom :D). I just wanted some proof Nintendo really was going to stick with the online thing. I dreaded hearing "Super Smash Bros coming to Revolution, and online games to follow" because well, that's what they have DONE. Them stating right now that yes, this SPECIFIC title is online is the sort of thing that gives me great confidence I'll be struggling against GR's onslaught in a matter of THIS YEAR!
Well it could just mean that it'll be really cheap and easy to develop for small developers.
Then why not say that? Why say "indie games by INDIVIDUALS with big ideas"? They made a definite distinction there. I hope it's not just corporate BS.
Quote:Well it could just mean that it'll be really cheap and easy to develop for small developers.

Yeah, I was thinking that under 'just marketing speak'... as in, nice for some developers, but little impact on the general public (except as another bullet on the list!). We'll have to see.

Quote:I just wanted some proof Nintendo really was going to stick with the online thing.

I'm still not quite sure how serious they are about it... I'll believe it when I both see it and see it followed up, and not dropped like GC online was.
Well, individual developers. I don't know...
It seems unlikely that they'll just drop it if one of the flagship titles is online.
Online is definitely on. This is nothing like the GC situation.
And this time every system comes with online built in. This won't be the GC all over again.
I know the GC online games aren't from Nintendo, but one was released, and then ... nothing ...

We'll see with DS. Will it become common or a rare exception? That might be a good clue for if the Revolution's online mode will go anywhere.
It's definitely going to happen, ABF. They've even announced online partners.
A lot of online games are already in development for the DS, including at least 2 from Nintendo themselves.
I seem to remember articles about rumored online partners for the GC. :)
I think this is a bit different.
I'm hoping so, yes, but the experience with the GC has left me cautious...
