May 16, 2005 - Straight from Sony's press conference here at E3 comes the big news we've all been waiting for...PlayStation 3 is real, baby.

We're blasting up this article as the conference is still going on, but we're going to keep on updating with official details as they roll in from over the phone.<!--start image table --> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="460"> <tbody><tr><td align="center" width="460">[Image: e3-2005-ps3-official-20050516044920450-000.jpg]</td></tr></tbody> </table> <!--end image table -->The first word: The name of the next Sony super system is definitely PS3 or PlayStation 3. Nothing fancy or surprising there. And, at least Sony didn't go with PlayStation 361 to outdo Microsoft. Sony isn't joking around either, the PS3 is the focus of the conference. More details as the come, but be sure to check out the linked stories below for full PS3 coverage from the SCEI event.

Share your impressions with us by writing in your positive, negative, and overall thoughts on the PS3's unveiling. Do you like the controller? Do you like the PS3's metallic case? Are these the kind of games that you would described as "next-generation"? What's missing from the PS3 that you would like see added or confirmed? How will the competition do against this system? Will you get a PS3?

LOS ANGELES--Today saw the second of the big three console makers announce its next-generation platform. At its pre-E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment gave the world its first look at the PlayStation 3, as it now is officially called. While the device's price has not yet been set, its release window--spring 2006--has. Flanked by Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Kaz Hirai, SCE head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "supercomputer for computer entertainment."

The name was not unexpected, since Sony had been running an extensive teaser-ad campaign prepping the public for the PlayStation 3. The company had laid a blanket of posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center, site of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3). Bus stalls and billboards around the convention center proclaimed "Prepare for Chang3" in the distinctive PlayStation font with partial shots of the Dual Shock controller's square-circle-triangle-X buttons.

Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3 will use Blu-ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. Sony also confirmed the machine would be backward compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, an SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5-inch HDD, somewhat similar the Xbox 360's. Sony did not mention if the drive would be standard.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2GHz, giving the whole system 2 teraflops of overall performance. It will sport 256MB XDR main RAM at 3.2GHz, and it will have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700MHz.

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer," which is based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. The RSX also has 512MB of graphics render memory and is capable of 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. It also has more than 300 million transistors, larger than any processor commercially available today. It will be manufactured using the 90nm process, with eight layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which would cost roughly $1,000 total if purchased today.

The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, Internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video. Speaking of video, Sony Computer Entertainment's Chief Technical Officer Masa Chatani was on hand to show off the PS3's panoramic video functions. Since the console has two HD outputs, it is can be hooked up to two side-by-side HDTVs to projecting video in a 32:9 extra-widescreen format (think Cinemascope in your living room). Like a gigantic version of the Nitnendo DS, the dual digital outputs also allow for an extended game display, with the action on one screen and either game information or video chat on the second.

Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers, which can be used for nearly 24 hours before they require charging. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals: four up front and two in the back. As rumored, it will also have Wi-Fi connectivity to the PSP, which can be used as a remote screen and/or controller.

Dr. Richard Marx, the inventor of EyeToy, was on hand to show off the PS3's wireless HD IP Camera. The demo, recalled rumors that the machine will have Minority Report-esque motion-sensing capabilities. Marx held two small cup-like objects in his hands, which move the cups on the screen in real time.

To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 engine show-off of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and by manipulating the camera and zooming in.

However, Sweeney's words were only the beginning. Later, Sony trotted out a whole host of publishers that are backing the PlayStation 3. And in the process, it confirmed several games for the console. Hideo Kojima introduced Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4, Capcom showed off Devil May Cry 4, Namco unveiled Tekken 6, Polyphony Digital trotted out a fifth Gran Turismo, SCEE showed off the next Killzone, and Rockstar Games mentioned that a Grand Theft Auto would be released for the console.

EA President Larry Probst was also on hand to show off a demonstration of the next Fight Night game, which will presumable be called Fight Night Round 3. When one of the two realistic fighter took a blow, his skin rippled realistically. Kudo Tsonoda from EA's Chicago studio was on hand, and said that the goal is to make facial animation convey the amount of punishment a pugilist has suffered.

Quote:E3 2005: PlayStation's Back, Alright! Backwards-compatibility re-confirmed.
by Nix

May 16, 2005 - The big excitement of this year's Sony Conference at E3 was about the new PlayStation 3, but don't let news of a new system deter you from getting psyched for the PS2 games that will be shown on the show floor (and PS1, if there happens to be an amazing PS1 game to report on this year ... Hey, it could happen.) Sony reconfirmed as part of its E3 unveiling of PS3 that the system will be backwards-compatible with PS2 and PS1 games.

There was no word in this news on whether texture smoothing might be used to improve PS2/PS1 games -- the PlayStation 2 had rudimentary filters to help run PlayStation 1 games with a cleaner look and with less loadtimes, so it is hoped that we'll see some advancements with this new monster machine on the games everybody already owns. Look for a test of PS3's backwards compatibility a long, long time from now. In the meantime, we'll be covering all of the PS2 games (and PS1 games) that you should be buying in preparation for this new Sony console. Oh, and obviously, to play and enjoy the hell out of in the meantime...

Quote:E3 2005: PS3 to Output 1080p Standard

An HD revolution.
by Ivan Sulic

May 16, 2005 - Among one hundred billion other bits of technical information, we recently learned that the PlayStation 3 will be capable of outputting a 1080 progressive scan image.

Very few pieces of media currently support 1080 progressive scan display. For reference, Apple recently announced that it would release new movie trailers in 1080p format, provided gamers used their new Quicktime application. Additionally, a couple of movies (namely Terminator 2) support 1080p. While a lot of televisions do not currently support the ultra high-end format, it's great to see Sony looking way into the future for its next system.

UPDATE - 6:22PM - We have just been updated by our away team at the SCEA conference that not only will 1080p be supported by the system, but that this is considered the standard resolution for the system. Every game for the system will be in incredible, indelible, indubitable HD.

Nobody at IGN even owns a TV that can do 1080p, but that's the system's goal - to give HDTV a killer app piece of hardware that people will no longer be able to live without. Get your wallet ready...

Quote: PS3 Unreal Engine 3: Under the hood

Hardware Analysis: Epic shows off Unreal Engine 3 on the PlayStation 3; gamers contemplate a match made in heaven.

The power of one of the next-generation consoles was shown today as Sony and Epic Games showed off Unreal Engine 3 running in real-time on the PlayStation 3. GameSpot had the opportunity to see Unreal Engine 3.0 at this and last year's Game Developers Conference, and while undoubtedly gorgeous, one couldn't help but notice that the then-cutting edge PC hardware struggled to run it smoothly. The PlayStation 3 was the first time GameSpot editors have seen the graphics engine running in beautiful, smooth motion, and it's undeniably impressive.

The demo was given by Tim Sweeney, Epic cofounder and chief technology officer. A quick synopsis is as follows: the demo began with fiery explosions, one of which hurled an Unreal-style soldier clad in metal armor through the air. Sparks flew when the soldier slams on a metal walkway as he aims his weapon at the sinister looking robot chasing him.

The soldier then fires his weapons and drops the robot, gets up and limps to the walkway's edge. However, the perspective changes to the robot's point of view, and one sees it reactivating and getting back up, then charge at the soldier. The soldier, sensing the danger, turns around and tries to raise his weapon, but the robot gets to him first and tackles him over the precipice. They fall to the platform below, and they both get up and stare at each other. Half the robot's head is shot off, and you can see the metal glowing around the shot-off area.

Somehow, the soldier's rocket launcher is thrown into the air, where it begins to slowly tumble. The robot slams into the guy and tries to crush him, but the soldier gets leverage and tosses the robot over another edge. He then catches the falling rocket launcher, and then pumps three rounds at the falling opponent, which explode and destroy it finally.

As a movie, it was a spectacular technological tour de force, and just to show that it wasn't a pre-rendered movie, Sweeney replayed the demo, then paused it and zoomed in and out, showing off various technological details.

The engine was running in 720p on a high-definition screen, about the equivalent of a PC's resolution, giving everything a sharp look. The engine also had perfect lighting and shadowing, with shaders that are approximately 200 times more complex than in the previous console generation.

What was most impressive is that the engine takes advantage of high dynamic range lighting, which allows for a very realistic simulation of real light and shadows.

The engine also uses per-pixel lighting and shadowing, to capture the little details that, when taken together, are most impressive. It's no understatement to say that the industry has reached a new plateau in graphics, and we're looking at games that are on par with Hollywood movies.

Unreal Engine 3 is also a very interesting choice for Sony to demo, as the engine is extremely multiplatform. Epic is primarily a PC developer, and the company is already using Unreal Engine 3 in its game for Microsoft's Xbox 360 Gears of War.

The early screens of Gears of War, as well as early gameplay that we saw at Game Developer's Conference in March, indicate that Unreal Engine 3 will look as impressive on that platform as it does on the PS3. And as PC graphics and CPU power inevitably improve over the next year or so, we'll be able to see that level of graphical prowess on desktops.

So the good news is that Unreal Engine 3 looks good to go on next-generation consoles and PC's, and gamers will be better for it by a large margin.

LOS ANGELES (CP) - Sony unveiled its PlayStation 3 on Monday, a "monster machine" powered with a new Cell processor that its creators say offers super-computer-like performance. The machine will be out in spring 2006 to do battle with the Xbox 360 which is expected in stores by Christmas. There was no immediate word on price.

Sony officials promised movie-like effects and quality in next-generation titles. The PS3 is backward compatible, meaning it will play PS2 games.

It will also allow the user to surf the Net, a feature lacking on the Xbox 360. Sony promised its new machine will be far more powerful than Xbox's.

Sony showed off three versions of the PS3: in silver, white and black. Essentially it looks like a fancy DVD player.

PlayStation is the industry leader, with more than 190 million units of PS and PS2 sold to date.

"PlayStation 3 will be the most important computer entertainment and digital media platform of the decade," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president of Nvidia Corp., a graphics company that worked on the PS3 with Sony.

Quote:E3 2005: PS3, Ed's Quick Opinions
IGN's most laidback and rational employee shares his thoughts on Sony's PlayStation successor.
by Ivan Sulic

May 16, 2005 - So Sony just concluded the E3 2005 press conference where PS3 was unveiled in a big, big, amazingly huge way. What do our boys think about it?

Our own Ed Lewis was on-hand for the demonstration, so we asked him a couple of questions. What was the best part, Ed?
"Man, that's so hard to say. There were so many really, really impressive things going on in that conference, especially that last game, Motor Storm. It looked fantastic. And Fight Night was crazy, too. They also did this lighting demo on this woman's face and they showed the way it danced and played off everything -- amazing. And Killzone 2 also looks sick.

They do have a new controller though and it looks really small and...weird. I don't understand it all, but if the whole thing is really coming out this spring, that's fine with me."

What was the worst part?
"I think the Ubisoft first-person shooter didn't quite look as good as the other ones."

Would you say you're sold on the system?
"Oh yeah. I'm very much sold on it. Way more than I was on the 360, anyway. The showing was much more impressive in terms of my ideas about what a next-gen system should be. I mean, Sony even showed a killer Unreal 3.0 engine demo. I haven't really seen much of Gears of War, though, so it's hard for me to say definitively which one was better, but there it was, you know?

Don't be fooled, the PS3 was sick. It was all real-time. They even did this crazy rubber duck demo. Yikes. It works off a new EyeToy. They had a tub with a lot of water and a rubber ducky in it. Then the EyeToy inventor came out holding a green cup and a blue cup. Wherever he moved the cups, two digital glasses on the screen would move around the gameworld. So he has two real glasses and they are translated into two digital cups that he could dip into the bath tub (which was governed by real physics) and then realistically pour water into each of the cups. The bathtub water even waved realistically. It helped that everything being shown was running in 720p."

What was shady about the conference?
"Shady? Nothing really. Well... I guess the one thing they didn't really delve too deeply into was the media sharing concept and this whole "HD anywhere broadcasting" business. I was just too unsure of what they really meant by all of the buzzwords. You know, I also don't know what a game running on two HD screens at the same time will look like, given that there's that missing middle part, you know? But it could work like DS where one screen shows gameplay and the other shows a status menu or something. But I have no idea."

Oddities?
"Who the hell owns two HDTVs that they can hook their PS3 up to?"

Quote:PlayStation 3 promises more power than its competitors
By Mike Snider, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — The successor to the top-selling PlayStation 2 video game system will arrive next spring, Sony announced Monday.
<table class="sidebar" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td colspan="4">[Image: clear.gif]</td> </tr> <tr> <td rowspan="2">[Image: inside-playstation.jpg]</td> <td rowspan="2">[Image: clear.gif]</td> <td class="sidebar" valign="top" width="75">Plays DVDs, too: Sony’s PlayStation 3 will work well with HDTV.</td> <td rowspan="2">[Image: clear.gif]</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="bottom">Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Although rival Microsoft will have a head start with its Xbox 360, due this fall, Sony boasts that the PS3 will have twice its power.

The system will support Sony's high-definition format, the Blu-Ray disc, and all PlayStation and PS2 formats, plus DVDs, Super-Audio CDs and CDs. It also will have built-in wireless and broadband capability. "PlayStation 3 truly is a system to be placed in the center of the living room in homes around the world," Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, said at a news conference before the E3 Expo.

No price was announced. Models in silver, gray and black were shown. The PS3 sits vertically or horizontally.

The PS3 not only will deliver high-definition video games to HDTV sets, but it also will allow those fortunate enough to own two HDTVs to create a single panoramic ultra-wide arena.

A second screen such as a PC monitor could also be used to show tactical and statistical game data or video chat streams.

"This is allowing (users) to control multiple sources of entertainment simultaneously," Kutaragi said, "merging the real and virtual world together."

PS3 tech facts:

• A "cell processor" created by IBM with Sony and Toshiba has supercomputer-type performance 35 times more powerful than PS2.

• The nVidia graphics processor is more powerful than two high-end PC graphics cards.

• Seven controllers can connect wirelessly; the PlayStation Portable can be used as a controller.

Microsoft's Xbox, announced last week, also aims squarely for the living room, with high-definition video, music and movies.

Sony has introduced past home systems in time for the holiday shopping season. The spring release date "is a good move on their part," says Dan Hsu, editor in chief of Electronic Gaming Monthly. "They don't want Microsoft to get too much of a head start."

Several dizzying demonstrations included a Halo-like battle between a starship trooper and a Terminator-like adversary that ended in a gut-wrenching fall.

Other immersive action scenes rivaled films such as Saving Private Ryan and Lord of the Rings.

The technological demonstrations, also including EA's Fight Night and Square/Enix's Final Fantasy XII, show that "the potential is definitely there," Hsu says. "But it's tricky to say how that's going to translate to in-game (action)."

Sony Press Release for PS3

I thought we could use a thread to compile and organize information about the PS3. I'll continue updating this post as I find new info.

That's pretty big.
Looks about the same size as the PS2. Of course that wasn't exactly small. Still I think it's smaller than the Xbox 360.
It's going to look huge compared to the Rev.
Sleek looking, though...
Indeed.
I love the design. The only thing that stikes me as kind of odd is the Spiderman font. Don't get me wrong, I like the Spiderman font it just seems out of place. I'm sure I'll get used to it though.
It is pretty weird.
Nintendo just announced they will release the Nintendo Banana!
woo@!
Reading about Unreal Engine 3 on PS3 is making me excited. And this is all first gen. Imagine what a great developer who's had time to learn the ins and outs of the system will be able to do. It'll be insane.
Imagine MGS4.

*dies*
I'm just gonna go ahead and say it right now. Gran Turismo 5 will be photorealistic. :D
Yes.
Added a shot of the front panel open.
Added more pics of the system.
Add my pic with George Foreman!
That's a lot of stuff to read, so instead I'll just look at the pictures.
