You're so wierd, ABF.
And here I was thinking Yojimbo was an Aeon from Final Fantasy X.
You guys suck.
Yojimbo:

So he's a Japanese samurai dude? Cool!

Not as cool as a ninja though!

But Bo Jackson is so cool, that he's like two ninjas taped together!
Yojimbo could totally own like a hundred ninjas even if they attacked him at once.
I doubt it. In movies people can beat millions of people, but if you pay attention, you'll notice that they don't all go at once. If 100 ninjas attack Bimbojo here, he'd be so done for.
How do you know? I bet you've never even seen that movie before!
His name is Sanjuro, though... Yojimbo literally means "bodyguard".

:D
...

That's not the point.
Yeah...

There's no point explaining this to these philistines, though. :p
Uncultured hicks, that's what they are!
Ninjas so rule. They wouldn't have made so many "Three Ninjas" movies, featuring those lovable white American child ninjas who had the power to defeat Hulk Hogan, if this were not so.
And then there's "Beverly Hills Ninja".
Sorry OB1... Samurais are cool, but Ninjas are recognized as being cooler. Actual power in the real world doesn't really matter. :)
Recognized by morons in this country, yes. In Japan, where both of them come from, the Samurai is far, far more popular.
Americans aren't exactly the most versed people in the world about other cultures... and given that, I can see how ninjas became more popular. Samurai are just swordfighters, after all. :)
I used to think ninjas were the coolest until I saw movies like Yojimbo and Hidden Fortress.

I hope that last part was sarcasm.
Is it REALLY that hard to understand when I'm not serious? It isn't to me, at least... :)
It REALLY is.
You always have comprehension problems, so I don't exactly take you as the best judge of it.
But nobody gets you. Only you do.

If anyone here understood that ABF was being sarcastic, please say so.
Ninjas are just guys that prance around in dark spandex and throw pieces of metal at each other.

...

BAM!
I don't just the coolness based on which one's stronger, just by which one is more entertaining to watch in the movies, on TV, and in video games. Shadow from Final Fantasy VI, for example, is awesome and he's a ninja. Samurai are still awesome (Rurouni Kenshin is the only anime I've been watching lately, and the manga is even better than that dubbed crap) and I realize that they're actually more powerful, but ninjas put on a better show in fiction, if only slightly.
You can't have an accurate opinion on this matter because you have not seen any good Samurai fiction. And no, good heavens no, Ruroni Kenshin does not count as good Samurai fiction.

Here's a short list of what you need to watch:

-Seven Samurai (arguably the greatest film ever made, ever)
-Yojimbo
-any original Zatoichi movie (not the new one)
-Sword of Doom
-Samurai Assassin
-Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance

That's a good starter list. Just pick any two of those movies for now.

Nobody else was paying enough attention to have an opinion, clearly.

OB1: once you accept that people can disagree with you without being utterly misinformed (or uninformed) and/or idiots, you'll be much better off... I'm not making a statement about ninjas vs. samurai, since I haven't seen much of either outside of some anime and American stuff, but saying 'My way is right, and you'll see that once you learn the truth' is as foolish a thing to say as ever.

What about the movie Samurai Fiction?
So you're saying that Geno (and the rest of you) aren't uninformed in this case? So you have seen a good number of Samurai movies? Because if that's the case then I have no problem with your opinions. It's when you're ignorant about something that I have a problem.

You can't expect everyone to do everything you have (no one should)... and when you think about it isn't it obvious why Ninjas are more popular in America than Samurai? Sure, there's a lot of ignorance shaping it. But the concept of 'Ninja' an American would think of isn't realistic anyway, so who cares?

Think of it like how you and GR talked about Bo Jackson. Not based on any facts or real-world data, just fun and 'that could be cool'. And really, is there somoething so wrong with that? Sure, it's not quite the same issue you're talking about, but it's more pertinent to the actual discussion.

Oh. a question... if to understand Samurai you think people should watch Samurai movies, what should they be watching to really understand NInjas?
Did you even read the past few posts here? Or did you just put on your ABF goggles like usual and start imagining things? Because Geno was specifically talking about which one was cooler in fiction.

There are only a handful of good Ninja movies out there, and they're not the kind that you people are used to. There are literally hundreds of terrific Samurai movies out there, however. That's not hyperbole.

I was replying to that post and didn't read the rest of the thread after it. Hey, it's vacation, I'm doing more important things than being on the internet .... like, um, playing N64 games...

The real reason is that I didn't bring my computer home with me on break so I've got to use my dad's, which means I can't be on as much. And wouldn't really want to either.
Typical.
I see you're not responding to my point, though, as usual...
What point? About playing N64 games? Whup-dee-doo!

It was relating, partially, to what Geno said here.

Ogre Battle 64 is fun, but annoyingly tough at times... :)

What's your point? That ninjas are popular in an arbitrary ignorance-based way, kind of like me and Bo Jackson? Ok...
And that thus you shouldn't be so insulting about it. Where you'd have a point is if someone said 'Ninjas are better than Samurai in every way', and they meant it to include historically, in Japanese cinema, etc, and not just in American portrayals of them... but "Ninjas are cooler than Samurai"? Based on ignorance yes, clearly, but that doesn't matter when the question isn't about real-world issues, it's about "coolness" as viewed by someone who hasn't seen any of the source material... like at least 95% of Americans...

("Americans are ignorant of the world", then? Yeah, that's probably true. But it doesn't mean you can then say 'and that makes all of your opinions on what you do see wrong by all standards'.)
Well yes Americans are wrong for thinking that ninjas are cooler than Samurai. It's an objective fact!
OB1 Wrote:If anyone here understood that ABF was being sarcastic, please say so.

I did. The :) at the end of it made it really obvious to me, I have to admit.
As I've said many times before, OB1 has serious problems understanding what others say -- and mean -- and refuses to admit the fact. It DEFINITELY contributes to our ... difficulties ... :D (Sure, I'm hardly great on the matter either some of the time, but at least I ADMIT IT!)
So you've got one person on your side. Congrats.
Denial, the absolute worst way to face a problem.
I'm not taking sides, I'm kinda just quoting a fact. He made an effort to draw attention to his sarcasm and I caught it.
You're the expert!
