After several months of mentally ignoring it, I finally decided to give Invader Zim a chance and get the first volume on DVD. I had been reluctant to spend my hard earned moneys obtaining it because of the Nickoldeon logo that was prominently displayed on the cover. Anyway, I got it and took it home and watched the first episode. I was pleasently surprised by what I saw/heard. It was not the mainstream, braindead writing-filled kids show I had hoped it wouldn't be.

The premise of Invader Zim is the shortest invader in the Ergon army is sent to Earth because the leaders want to get rid of him. It seems that in Operation Impending Doom 1 he made a big mess of things. Anyway, they send him off with his trusty, though completely unintelligent, robot Gir who has brains made out of a few coins and a paper clip. Zim believes the Ergons are depending on him to conquer earth and the Ergon leaders are hoping the never see Zim again. On Earth the only person who knows that knows Zim is an alien is one of his classmates named Dib, but everyone else in the class thinks Dib is crazy even though Zim has green skin and no ears.

One thing I noticed fairly early about this series was that it was very different from the Nickoldeon norm. For one thing there were a number of episodes that were down-right disturbing, although mainly in comparison to what you usually get in afternoon cartoons. Another thing was that the creators were not above brutilizing the various characters in the series for a laugh. One episode in particular, called Dark Harvest, had Zim stealing the other student's organs [and replacing them with..."stuff"] so that the school nurse wouldn't find out that he was an alien, because as we all know the more organs you have the more human you are.

Anyway, don't be fooled by the Nickolodeon logo, Invader Zim is a great series; one that was ultimately cancelled while such shows as Rugrats, Rocket Power, and Hey Arnold live on. According to the creator, Jhonen Vasquez, he's never going to do anything involving animation again, which is really dissapointing given how great his one animated series was. You can get the first nine episodes of IZ for about $15 at just about anywhere that sells DVDs, so go out and get it. Or you can watch reruns on Nick.
Yeah yeah yeah, Zim is awesome, Zim is the best... haven't you heard enough Zim fans around? You sound like this is a new discovery...

I've seen a few episodes. It's quite good.

As a matter of fact I haven't, or if I had I skimmed it.

Quote:You sound like this is a new discovery...

For me it is and I'm sure it's the same for quite a number of people and likely for the same reasons.
I was just surprised that someone like you had never heard of this show... I'm sure it's been mentioned on this forum before somewhere (OB1?)...

Well, not so new considering that it's been through its couple of seasons and been cancelled... if this was two years ago fine, but now? It's a very good show, but unfortuately is done with no chance of more. :(
Zim IS awesome, too bad they cancelled it for no good reason!

Never saw the organ harvesting episode, but it is still a funny series, from the maker of a comic involving such classic strips as "wax pressed kittens". (You know, using the thicker books in the children's section.)
For not knowing of Invader Zim, I command you to sing the Doom Song. Now.
Yeah, he should be punished!

... would babysitting Gir for a weekend be too much of a punishment? Nah...

Well, considering that I don't HAVE Nick as part of my cable package...

It's one the best ones I've seen so far.

That's not OUR fault!

buckey_lasek

the germ episode is the best.

Well it's not MINE!

Best? Maybe not. Really, really good? Certainly.

buckey_lasek

really good, best whichever, at least you've seen it.
Great Rumbler Wrote:Well it's not MINE!

Well we need to blame SOMEONE!

...

DARUNIA! It's the damn Goron's fault!
Of COURSE!! His stony Goron body must be blocking the Nickolodeon signals from reaching my house!!
Invader Zim is great! And yeah we talked about it a year ago.
As I said. :)
I was concurifying* with you.

*what!!
I know, but it was good to know that I was right that you were one of the Zim fans...
I'm one of them, too. I've got 39 episodes on my computer... I think it's all of them.

And all of you are wrong... the best episode is Gir Goes Crazy And Stuff. :D

That really sucks... :( Did you hear that on the commentary of the DVD? Did he say why?
The whole experience of what happened with this show was more than he could take, I think...
Why don't you guys just read his comics? They're even better. Like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Great stuff.

I heard about it on the Internet Movie Database, apparently he decided not to do anything more with animation because of Nickolodeon and their kid-friendly ways.
Yeah so just read his comics, guys.
Nuts... Ya know, I really wish this guy went to Adult Swim Industries and then found out what a good company where people shoot nuns in the head is like.

Just one problem, we aren't like, being total idiots who are like "Wow, this is revolutionary because they mention morbid stuff, MORBID IS GOOD IN AND OF ITSELF" are we? I just have this funny feeling that might be the case, making me feel like some dirty smelly goth idiot...
I don't think anyone can help that...

OOOOH, PWN'ED!!!!

... seriously though... what?
I've got the complete JtHM series, and I agree, good stuff. I really want to get that Squee collection, too - I only read a little bit of it, but from what I read, it was hilarious.
Wow, someone here besides me who actually reads comics from the cartoon people we're fans of! Amazing!

I thought that all of you guys were afraid of comics. :p

The morbid stuff in IZ is funny though.
In the immortal words of Gir...

"HI FLOOR MAKE ME A SAMMITCH!!"
"Children, your performance was miserable. Your parents will all recieve phone calls instructing them to love you less now."
-Ms. Bitters

:D
Yeah, this series manages to actually not rely TOTALLY on the fact that something IS morbid in an odd way to be funny, it actually creates real JOKES.

For example, they don't just put up a picture of a suicidal clown and say "LAUGH BECAUSE IT IS A SUICIDAL CLOWN!". They actually work for the funny and make it a real joke, like showing the clown constantly failing in it's suicide attempts while at the same time entertaining kids.
DJ just pwn'd herself.
Intruder is...bologna.
