Anyone else get it yet? I've only played it for a couple of hours but I love it (surprise surprise)! I got Paper Mario 2 at the same time but I'm having trouble pulling myself away from GTA....
I got SA yesterday when it was released. It's pretty good so far, though I'm thinking that I liked Vice City, and even GTA3, better. Perhaps if I give it time, SA will grow on me. For one thing, I should probably start figuring the city out. I pretty much know Liberty and Vice like the back of my hand.

I got PM2 the day that it came out too. Surprisingly, I'm actually more hooked on it than I am on SA. I never expected that.
How could you like VC or GTA 3 more? SA has everything those two games had and then some (so say the very least). I can understand not being as excited about it since it's the third 3D GTA game released, but since every aspect has been improved upon it's clearly the best of the GTAs. It improves upon everything and then adds in more content than any console game has ever had.
This game is insane. Take all of the content of GTA 3 and Vice City, multiply that a few times, and you're still not close to understanding how huge San Andreas is. I don't even no where to begin!

Mini games! There are an insane amount of mini games in SA, everything from simple arcade games (not bad ones, either), pool, basketball, a Parappa-like rhythm game, and tons of more stuff that I've only heard of but have yet to try out.

I could play this forever. Yipes
I've played the game more now, and you're very right, SA is everything that made its predecessors great and then a lot. Maybe I just miss having to sacrifice all my businesses, hideouts, helecopters, and money from the end of VC and start over. I'm sure I'll get all that back soon enough... it'll give me something to work for. Seriously, once I obtained all that stuff, VC wasn't much fun anymore... I just fiddled around. SA is fresh and new, which is why I've anticipated its release for so long.

In short, this game FUCKING RULES! There, I think that summed it up pretty well... actually, no it didn't, but it'll do for now.
Let me ask the one question wherein the answer determines if I'm interested. Can you actually TALK to people? That is, can you walk up to random people and actually do MORE than just bludgeon them over the head this time around? The previous games just seemed like boring murder fests, and the missions just felt like the same only someone tells you to do it a certain way... Granted, I never played them all the way through, but I DID give both around 2 or 3 hours of my time, which I think should be more than enough to capture my interest if it's something I'm going to enjoy.

My main beef with it is this game of "full freedom" isn't that free if you can't act however you want to and are forced to just be a murdering stealing thug. I would LIKE to, for example, go on a quest of redemption, asking people for information regarding gang whereabouts and having multiple ways, from non-violent to The Punisher, methods to end that particular thing. Or, if I wanted to be evil, I would want to be so in more ways than just stealing cars and killing random people for no good reason. I would like to, for example, intimidate people and start up a bit of a legend about myself, or perhaps go completely undercover, finding the occasional bum in an alleyway and asking for information on secret areas, and actually INTERACT with these gangs in ways other than "do this, and you get payed, or a car, or a gun". Rather, the ability to walk in and either negotiate perhaps in a similar way to that, or, intimidate and just take over that group and slowly form a syndicate, and depending on how I do it, some strange plot points can develop. And then, as a result of me being weird, these story developments get all glitched and such :D, like, the Hello Kitty factory, which I somehow managed to make the outpost of a rival gang by my actions, suddenly takes the name of it, which would be one of the many mechanisms for gang naming, and so I'm accousted by the Hello Kitty gang of west side.

But enough of the big dream, the major question Geno is this. Can I truly interact with people? I can imagine that the majority of people would still have very default and mass reactions, but I'd like to do more than just stand in front of a car "stop", open the door, throw them out, and have the only reaction be yelling, or maybe one randomly pulls a gun. I'd like to actually talk to people in their car, maybe actually asking to buy it, maybe they aren't as innocent as they may seem and for a satchel of fire arms, I can get a ride, and later I find that was a big mistake because that particular random peon has joined some rival syndicate.
I would be pretty surprised if you could do that. GTA, after all, is an action/driving game, not an adventure... you only talk to people in the context of missions.
Actually, I have the answer to all of those questions, but DJ can't see my posts so what's the point? :)
Quote:Actually, I have the answer to all of those questions, but DJ can't see my posts so what's the point?

That is a good question... though as I said I'd be very surprised to see talking to random people in a GTA game.
The interaction hasn't been improved that much. Basically, if you stand around and let someone pass you by, they might say something like, "What's up?" and you can push left on the control pad to say something negative like, "I don't really give a fuck!" or push right to say something positive... or at least it's supposed to be positive, but it's usually something like, "Man, get outta here..."

I see where DJ is coming from though. It would be cool if you could interact with the city more and not just steal cars, kill people, and go on missions. It'd be nice, for example, if you could run the businesses that you buy in Vice City. (Like sell cars at Sunshine Autos or what have you.)

In the long run, if you didn't enjoy GTA3 or Vice City a whole lot, you probably won't care for San Andreas either. If you liked either of the predecessors, however, then you'll love San Andreas. If you're unsure, just give it a rental.
That about answers what I need to know. This is a love it or hate it series, and unfortunatly I'm in the "hate it" camp. I'll be keeping my eye on the series though since I figure they may just answer my wishes.
Hate it? I didn't know there was much of a real 'hate it' camp for GTA, except for people offended by the violent content... sure dislike, but hatred? Seems a bit strong for a series I'd think everyone could admit is quite good.
Love it or hate it is an expression. Love it or dislike it is not. Yeesh...
As much as I love GTA, I prefer games with real storylines. (Zelda, Final Fantasy, Mario, etc.)
Mario has a storyline? :D

So um, you are saying the GTA games don't have a lick of story outside "you are criminal badguy and you breaka outta da jail, now crime rates is all up ons and is your jobs to totally do it too"?

They have a story ... but in its basic form, yeah, you've pretty much got it there. :)
Well, you break out of jail in GTA3, but in Vice City, you sell drugs and your deal is busted, and in San Andreas, the main character's mom is killed and the police take away his drug money. Other than that, your analysis of GTA's storyline is pretty much point blank.
Yeah, Mario has a storyline! It escapes me at the moment...but it does have one!

Oh, and GTA: SA is awesome. I've only recently been exploring the true depth of the game. I can't wait to take a road trip out of Los Santos and see what I can find out in the uncharted lands :).

Given that GTA actually does attempt a story, they need a reason that you're a criminal other than "you hate society" or something...
Los Santos is bigger than all three islands of Liberty City put together. San Andreas as a whole must be huge.
Geno, you must not have played SA for very long. There is actually a pretty good story in this game, and some terrific writing for a video game. But if you don't like gangster movies you probably won't dig the story.
