But nothing on the launch lineup... good grief.

From ign:

Quote:September 20, 2004 - Today, Nintendo finally broke the news on the Nintendo DS system.

The Nintendo DS, it's upcoming dual-screen handheld system, will launch in North America on November 21st for a retail price of $149.99.
PictoChat, the software program that enables DS owners to sent text and pictures wirelessly to nearby DS systems, will be embedded in the system hardware. The DS system will spring to life out of "sleep mode" if it senses any other systems in the area, giving gamers the opportunity to chat spontaneously with each other.

More than 100 companies have signed on to create games for Nintendo DS, while Nintendo itself is already developing its first 20 titles. Electronic Arts' Madden NFL, The URBZ: Sims in the City, Need for Speed Underground, Tiger Woods and GoldenEye are being made for the system. The complete lineup of games planned for the launch of Nintendo DS will be announced in the near future.

Nintendo has confirmed that the system will be backward compatible with Game Boy Advance games, but will not support system-link multiplayer in GBA games due to the DS' lack of link cable port.

Nintendo chose the United States to lead the worldwide launch of Nintendo DS because of overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic reaction from consumers and to take advantage of the holiday sales season. After the subsequent launch in Japan, the system will be available in Europe and Australia in the first quarter of 2005.

"Nintendo's mission remains unchanged: expand the game experience," says Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. "Nintendo DS is the road map to the future of video games, and most clearly demonstrates the type of innovation that players demand."

Just about what I expected. It's also going to be bundled with a Metroid Hunters demo which is nice.

But am I getting it? So far, no. They've yet to show off any games that I really want to buy a $150 handheld for. I will of course get it eventually, but possibly not at launch. If stupid Nintendo would actually tell us what games are launching with the system then perhaps I could friggin' decide!

Pictochat is nice to have in the system, but what use is it going to have when Nintendo doesn't seem to want to support long-distance wi-fi? Oh hey, now I can chat with my friend that's ten feet away from me instead of talking to him the old-fashioned way! Woo! Whatever

Another thing announced at the press conference is that the DS will not support multiplayer GBA games that require the use of a link cable since there is no slot for it on the DS. Wonderful, eh?
Here's the news item on the Metroid demo, from ign:

Quote:September 21, 2004 - Nintendo has revealed that it will include a demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters with the Nintendo DS system when it launches this November 21st.

The demo, titled Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt, will offer a first taste of the entire game, including single player modes of the first -person adventure, as well as a handful of multiplayer modes to take advantage of the system's wireless connectivity. Up to four players can join in Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt.

The inclusion of a game demo such as Metroid Prime: First Hunt may be a strategy to raise the age of the Nintendo DS' demographic, along with offering more value for the DS' 150 dollar premium.

We'll have more on the Nintendo DS soon.

Looks great, but if the single-player mode is just deathmatch I won't be buying it. And this looks like the alternate control scheme since the map is now on the touch screen.
I'll probably sell my GBA and get the DS, it's not like a play any multiplayer games on my GBA anyway.

Quote:Oh hey, now I can chat with my friend that's ten feet away from me instead of talking to him the old-fashioned way!

Actually, it's 100 feet.
Quote:I'll probably sell my GBA and get the DS, it's not like a play any multiplayer games on my GBA anyway.

No friends with GBAs where you live? That sucks. GBA multiplayer is bojacksome.

Oh and if you have any GBC or GB games you're going to want to keep your SP.

Quote:Actually, it's 100 feet.

Haha, I know that, but that's really not much better. Yay, I can chat with my next door neighbor without having to walk next door to see him! Hell yeah!!
Quote:No friends with GBAs where you live? That sucks. GBA multiplayer is bojacksome.

Nope. The only person I meet on a regular basis that has a GBA is my brother and we don't have two copies of any games.

Quote:Oh and if you have any GBC or GB games you're going to want to keep your SP.

I have a regular GBA and my brother has an SP, so we'll just sell the GBA.
Quote:Nope. The only person I meet on a regular basis that has a GBA is my brother and we don't have two copies of any games.

That really sucks. Four Swords is so much fun... so is Advance Wars 1 & 2, the Sonic games, and a few dozen other titles.

Quote:I have a regular GBA and my brother has an SP, so we'll just sell the GBA.

Good plan.

Say, we're using quote tags, so we better start arguing or something.

... You're so wrong and dumb and you know it!
DS for $150 sounds about right. I won't get it soon though because I just got a GBA a year ago and don't need a new console now, but it's a pretty good price for a new system...

Selling GBAs? I wouldn't recommend it. Well, if the DS ends up actually compatible with all GB games sure, but if it's only compatible with GBA and not GB or GBC like seems possible?
Quote:... You're so wrong and dumb and you know it!

Your ideas are wrong because they're different from mine!
Quote:Selling GBAs? I wouldn't recommend it. Well, if the DS ends up actually compatible with all GB games sure, but if it's only compatible with GBA and not GB or GBC like seems possible?

Not only is the DS not compatible with GB/GBC games, but it also doesn't work with link cable mutli games. :(

Quote:Your ideas are wrong because they're different from mine!

Oh yeah? Well, well Arthur said that he hates you!! Take THAT!!!

*runs away crying*
*points and laughs at OB1*
Arthur: *joins forces with OB1 and returns the pointing and laughing at Johnny*

*Rupert enters the room*

Rupert: Hey fellas...

Everyone: Uh-oh.
Stan: Alright, this whole thing with inventing new people is getting WAY out of hand. You guys should just stop doing it right now.

Martin: Yeah, I agree.

Hal: I don't think's out of hand at all! All these new people are making the board a lot more lively.

Martin: It's a slippery slope, Hal, and you know it. Soon there won't even be any real people here!

Jerry: This forum sucks anyway! I'm going to TeamXbox.

Ben: TeamXbox? Jerry, are you insane? That's one of the worst forums on the internet!

Nancy: All this new people are out of control! Somebody better hurry up and do something about this mess!

All the real people: ...
Is that from something? I don't get it...
Quote:Not only is the DS not compatible with GB/GBC games, but it also doesn't work with link cable mutli games.

I thought so. So selling your GBAs would be quite stupid.
Dark Jaguar Wrote:Is that from something? I don't get it...

Arthur: Haha, DJ can't believe that we're being stupid without ripping off some show or webcomic! Lol

Rupert: I know, this is great!
A Black Falcon Wrote:I thought so. So selling your GBAs would be quite stupid.

Yes, unfortunately.

Also, Nintendo announced that the DS's battery life will be 6-10 hours, which is half of what the SP's battery life is. So suck on that for a while, you big battery-cry-babies.
Source?

Quote:I thought so. So selling your GBAs would be quite stupid.

Not if you have a GBA and an SP.
Look, sir! Boxart!

I think it looks great.
Stylus pens for everyone!

What is the etymology of the word "stylus"?
Yeah the boxart is pretty nice, and it's obvious that Nintendo is going to target the system towards an older, PSP-wantin' audience.

And the battery life thing is posted at ign. Go look for yourself. :p
Quote:And the battery life thing is posted at ign. Go look for yourself.

Actually I found it at Cube-Europe. Anyway, 6-10 hours is a bit lower than I would have hoped but still it's better than 3-6 hours that the PSP [supposedly] gets.
PSP is for stupid people
Actually it stands for "Popular Stupid People". The DS stands for "Doodoo Salad", however.
Quote:Not if you have a GBA and an SP.

Nope. Not if you want to play multiplayer games that is... remember, no link cable support from the DS.

6-10 hours? Yeah, lower than I was hoping for. That's too bad... it should still be well above the PSP's battery life (3-6 sounds possible depending on disk use, volume, how much the game is pushing the system, etc), but lower than would be ideal.
Quote:Nope. Not if you want to play multiplayer games that is... remember, no link cable support from the DS.

It is if you only have one copy of each game and don't know anyone else that has a GBA or copies of games that you have. Doi.
Some games have single-cart multiplay...
OB1 Wrote:Actually it stands for "Popular Stupid People". The DS stands for "Doodoo Salad", however.

Wouldn't that make it the DDS?
The second D is Doodoo isn't capitalized..

Otherwise, what's stopping you from making it the DDSD?
Exactly!

*applauds Hudson*
YaY!
I don't think I'm getting one. I've found that I've never really been able to get into hand held gaming. I don't play games that much anymore at all now
Seriously? Well, we've lost another one. What hobby suddenly took over? Probably ridiculously convoluted serial fantasy novels...
Was that a jab at LL? I think it was!

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
OOOOH! Zinged! *joins OB1 in calling for a fight*
*waits for fight*
*is still waiting for a fight*
Man this is taking forever.
Yeah, this is starting to get boring.
Fight? Involving who? What about?
Haha, if only DJ could see my posts...

*laughs*
Indeed. :D
Exxxactly!

...

Fight!
Haha, this is so much fun!

Blabiteeblooh! *sticks tongue out at DJ*
Picture of the box:

It looks awesome. And definitely aiming at that same 'older' market as the SP...
Who's fighting?
God dammit.

Look at the Shiggy and forget about it. He compels you. COMPELLLLS YOU!
