Sony's bright idea to advance the size of flash memory sticks is great because when new technology enters the arena it gives the old technology a chance to die down in price, of course the entire idea that sony's very own large capacity memory sticks being used in the Nintendo DS makes me laugh.

While 2G's is a very large amount the price notably is $350 which is reason enough not to use it but the price of 128 meg flash cards is going to come crashing down giving the DS an almost ten times larger game size then the average N64 cart.

Thanks Sony ^_^
The DS is using Sony memory sticks?
It's using a universal memory stick, which means funnily enough that unless Nintendo puts some protection or block out method on the DS it's up to the developer which brand and size they use which could very well mean that one of Sony's memory sticks ends up in your nintendo DS.

On another note, even if one doesn't end up in your DS Sony's continued interest in developing better memory technologies means that Nintendo's memory stick or card of choice will drop in price to compete, either way it's a win-win for us and Nintendo.
"universal"? I thought the PHYSICAL size of all the card brands was limited. Are you saying memory cards have FINALLY been standardized?
There are six major types of memory cards, thats mostly to do with shape which is stupid, there should be a universal one, but the DS uses the one most commonly seen in kodak camera's, atleast it very much resembled the one in my kodak some thing or rather, I'll find out the model number if this becomes an issue, but yeah. Either way it's not the shape of the card thats important it's the technology behind the memory that makes a difference, which ever the DS uses that memory stick will be in competition with sony's which would still mean that it's going to lower in price the better sony's memory gets, like I said, a win-win.
You refer to the SD memory card? They seem to be by far the most common.
That would make the most sense since Nintendo has always had a good relationship with Panasonic.

Hmm, does this mean that we'll soon have DS games that go over the 1 Gb limit? A lot of developers have been complaining about the low DS card capacity.
They probably could go over that size, as the DS game cards do seem to have a lot in common with SD cards, but it'd raise the price (of the cards/games), and quite a bit too I'd bet...
1Gb is so tiny...
It's ~120MB, right? Like, twice as big as the largest N64 game ever...
~128 MB.

Yes it's larger than a N64 cart, but remember how standards keep on changing, Brian? Hell, the N64 carts were behind the times as soon as they were released.
True... but still, with compression it seems like you could fit a decent amount onto it. And with graphics of that detail (as in with lower quality graphics less space is needed for that part of the game) the only real need for lots of space is either lots of voice or FMV, after all...
Well developers are complaining for a reason.
Because they want FMV?
Or voice, since that's one of the DS' big features.
True. But they are cards and big cards cost a lot, you know.
Yeah I know, but it'll hurt them.
But it's better than using moving media and killing your battery life...
Nintendo invented tiny little DVDs. They should have used them.
Absolutely not! Battery life!
I'm still not convinced that the PSP's moving media's going to be very durable and then there's battery life...
We'll see. Eventually Nintendo is going to have to switch to discs for their handhelds.
Durability, that's also a pretty good point actually... carts are durable. CDs aren't.
And VHS tapes are more durable than DVDs.
And shoes are more durable than bacon.
Exactly!
Quote:And VHS tapes are more durable than DVDs.

But you don't carry around DVD/VCR players. Unless you're stupid. The portable DVD players I've seen, anyway, are put down on a flat surface and watched, rather than held in the hands. And when disc players aren't used on flat surfaces, there's potential to scratch the discs, isn't there? Doesn't the PS2 have some problems scratching the disks when played vertically?

Exactly.
Portable DVD players are usually watched on a person's lap because of their size. But you can hold them and the good ones won't fuck up on you. The PS2 does have problems being played vertically (even though it was meant to be played that way), but that's because of Sony's cheap, shitty PS2 hardware. Most players aren't like that. There is little difference between the durability of that and a good Walkman CD player. You guys are living in the stone ages.
Quote:but that's because of Sony's cheap, shitty PS2 hardware.

And we should have confidence in the PSP because...?
... well, their portable hardware has always been durable.
Scratched DVD's when played vertical? Cheap shitty hardware?

The machine was MADE to play in a vertical position. It does NOT scratch the disc when it's vertical. It MIGHT, however, scratch the disc if you are playing the game while the machine is horizontal, and while the machine is reading from the disc, you decide to change it into vertical.
I got a bunch of scratched PS2 discs when I had the system stand on its side, and my local game stores have notices warning people about playing their PS2s vertically. It really does fuck up your discs. And my PS2 reads my discs only half the time nowadays, even though I keep it dust-free and in perfect condition all of the time.
Quote:... well, their portable hardware has always been durable.

Keep telling yourself that about the PSP, but I doubt it'll make it true... :)
That's it, you've forced my hand...

Hahaha! I can't help but laugh everytime I see that pic! :D

My PS2 is getting where it only reads discs half the time too. Most of the time it won't read discs sitting in a horizontal position so I turn it on its side for a minute until it starts going.
Yeah what a crappy piece of hardware.

I love that pic as well. I think it's due for an update though. :D
and then maybe my face could end up on it, so i don't feel like such an outsider like i do every time i come here and no one likes me...

haha!
Yeah, ok. But you know, maybe you should get a different avatar. That's kinda small.
oh, so now my head's too small?

geez

...new avatar, eh? hmmm..........................i'll get back to you on that one!!!
DONE AND DONE!
... I mean something that could work as a head on a body.
Have you tried opening up your PS2 and cleaning it?

I know you think it's being kept dust free, but you'd be surprised. Every time mine stops playing I just clean it and it's good as new.

Also, perhaps you Americans have dud hardware, everyone who I know doens't have a problem with their PS2's in vertical position unless they move it. Then there's trouble.
I play it on it's belly where it deserves to be, the PS2 was kind of a let down because half the stuff on it was just a redone version of whatever was on the PSX and the other half was either multi-consol or just a sequal to the first half of crap.. so.. yeah..

While carts and memory sticks might seem kinda crapy because of thier size keep in mind that they use a shit load less energy and you can write and read at the same time, not only that but you can read from multiple items on the cart/stick which will save on load times, and as we all know the thing that most annoyed us about the PSX was load times well, atleast it was with me. I imagine the PSP will have rather noticable load times because one of sony's smartest moves in saving power would be to use a less powerfull motor to spin the mini dvd's.

In any case I am willing to bet no matter what sony does the psp will have games come out for it that will use more and more power then the unit was first designed to use, by this I mean the psp wasn't meant to be played off a disk while all the while listening to mp3's and using the wifi card all at the same time, I can imagine this being too much strain on it's power supply, on that note nintendo's decision to use cart/memory stick isn't as stupid as you might think, the Snes had a number of upgrades in the form of addon chips for the carts, most notable are the mode7 chips (it was also a programing technique made by nintendo also attempted by sega once or twice) and some other chip I can't be bothered remembering, my friend was telling me about it the other day, mode7 I remember though because of the games were made with it.

The camera, shaking pinball thing, the light game about vampires, wireless pokemon and a bunch of other stupid things all do-able because of the use of carts, though I think sony has a plan for using memory sticks in it's psp as well or atleast an expansion slot.

If not I'm sure thier USB 2 port will be able to support some form of upgrade, most of all this is speculation but I can guarentee you that the DS will have the longest battery life and will for sure have the most interesting games, maybe not the most media intensive but for sure the most fun...... wait, armored core is coming to psp? I'm a little split now..
oh yeah, like DJ's avatar really looks like a face

BLAH!
Quote:oh yeah, like DJ's avatar really looks like a face

He's got you there.
It's kinda... squarish... kinda like a head... uh... yeah, that's it! :)
DJ's avatar isn't really anything so it can pass as a face. But a picture of a bird holding a glass of beer on its beak with a town in the background would definitely not work as a head.
the bird has a face
Yeah but the image is so small that it'd look really bad cropped and blown up.
if you just don't care to put my face on the 90210 thing i'd understand. i mean, i'm a big guy, i can handle disappointment. but it seems to me that you're just making up excuses to not do it. BAD EXCUSES!!!

and if you really do feel the need to have a reason other than "i don't want to" you could just say something like "there aren't enough characters in the picture to include everyone!!"

to which i'd say "ok"

but you just keep saying my avatar's not good enough. which makes me sad. :(
