I haven't really payed much attention to it since it was announced, but after watching the three videos IGN has up, this is my most-anticipated handheld title until Minish Cap comes out (not surprisingly, Amazing Mirror is being developed by Flagship, the guys responsible for the Oracle games and Minish Cap). It looks so damn fun, and the art is gorgeous. Really makes me want to do better on my game. :D

Now when are we going to get a proper GC Kirby platformer?
It looks like a fantastic Kirby game, for sure! I definitely want this game... looks like it could be one of the best original platformers on the GBA. Though the one thing that Kirby games often lack is difficulty... oh well, they're fun. :)

As for a GC one, I guess it'd be nice... but I'd want it to be a lot better than Kirby 64!
Dude, I still don't understand the Kirby 64 hate. It's an excellent platformer, the only reason why it's not the best Kirby game ever is because it's not very difficult. Don't tell me the whole "you can't float forever!" thing is your main reason for dissing it...
You can't float forever! ... well I think that that was a major flaw...

It just wasn't as fun as I was hoping it would be. Other problems? Easy (though I never got to Dark Matter because I never got all the crystals... there are a lot of them and it's pretty tedious...). Mini bosses don't move and are pitiful. One of the three minigames is just totally idiotic (the one where you grab the fruit in baskets). Some other things too, but less important... but most importantly it just is not as fun to play as Kirby 2, or if you want N64 platformers Goemon's Great Adventure and Mischief Makers are both better.
I liked Kirby 64, it was really fun.
Goemon is better, but not MM. Floating forever is cheap! You can just fly over the whole level if you want to... basically.

Kirby 64 is crazy-fun, and anyone who says otherwise is off his or her rocker. :p Mixing those different abilities is the single-coolest thing in the entire series. Too bad amazing mirror doesn't let you do that.

I played Kirby 64 too soon after Goemon's Great Adventure. The greatness of that game left me let down when I played the decidedly inferior Kirby 64, especially considering my expectations of the game... Kirby couldn't fly forever, the crystals thing was just annoying with so many of them, you had no friends to ride on (yes, you did have a huge number of combinable powers, which was great, but I really liked the friends...), his speed seemed to be even slower than before -- he was never a fast character, but on a GB it wasn't as noticable --, etc... It's not a bad game, but it's not as good as I was hoping or as good as the best N64 platformers.

The best part of Kirby 64 is, probably, the Hundred Yard Hop. Well, if you have a friend who likes to play it in multiplay sometimes... that minigame is more fun than it should be in multiplayer. :)

Insignificant? Umm... walking speed (its most of what you do in sidescrollers!), flying (a huge part of Kirby!), your other forms (friends/powers, also a huge part of Kirby), stupid collection, pitiful minibosses... those aren't nearly as minor as you say. Design is a huge part of games, of course, and it really shapes your play experience... and right from the beginning design issues like that left me pretty dissapointed with the game, all things considered. Though as I said it's a good game, really.

What, would you say that it's better than Goemon's Great Adventure? Mischief Makers? Kirby 2 for GB? I'd definitely say no to all three... though it's closest to Mischief Makers.

Kirby 64 is a decent game. I only rented it once, and if I ever find it used for under $15, I'll buy it in a heartbeat or 3. Christ, it's still about $20-25 used. I've played more Mischief Makers than Kirby 64, hence I like it more. Plus, it's more innovative. I love the idea of gameplay being based around picking things up and shaking/chucking them (reminds me of Gunstar Heroes). It really is a great game -- I actually picked it up on Grumbler's recommendation. Good call, GR.
I don't get ABF's huge hangups about walking speeds..., or like camera zoom stuff.

Everything else, everyone notices, but those things... (Ya know you can run in Kirby 64, right ABF?)

Oh well, to each their own. Anyway, I enjoyed Kirby 64 and all, but it just doesn't beat the amazing cool of my fave Kirby game (AND the only other one I've played :D), Kirby Super Star.
Yeah Kirby can run, but he's slow...

Oh, for one more annoyance, you can't use the d-pad. Extremely annoying... the game would be just fine from analog. That's how I play GGA and, if I remember right, Mischief Makers... not allowing analog was a major mistake, IMO.

Kirby 64 also doesn't innovate at all. And as I said I kept comparing Kirby 64 and GGA and Kirby 64 was decidedly on the losing side one every issue... it's not bad, but it's not great. Too many problems and it just isn't fun enough to be called great, IMO.

That's really what it comes down to. How much fun are you having while you play the game? If you're having a lot of fun, you can ignore more issues than if you're not having as much fun. Like, if I thought about it I could probably come up with some complaints about Goemon's Great Adventure, but I was having a lot of fun playing it so they didn't bother me, and just thinking of them would take a while...

I liked Rocket, pretty good game...
This is just a case of you not being able or willing to evolve with the franchise and seeing that what was lost wasn't so bad and what was gained was oh-so-great. I certainly didn't complain when Yoshi's Island came out and was so fundamentally different from previous Marios. You can't fly, you have to keep baby Mario safe all of the time, etc, etc. But hey, if you choose to not like Kirby 64, I don't care. It's your loss.
Huge change? No, Kirby 64 is, in all ways except for the flying, the same as the previous games. It's definitely a Kirby game. And the flying wasn't the biggest issue with the game... just irritating. I know they did it to make the game harder, but it's fun to float over whole level sections! :)

I just didn't feel that the game held up as well on a major console as it did on the GB. On GB the Kirby games are some of the best ones. On N64 that isn't true... games are expected to do a lot more and Kirby 64 doesn't really do that. It's not a different kind of platformer like Mischief Makers or unique (in setting at least) like GGA, it's just Kirby... and not Kirby at his best. All the little problems I mention with this game, as I said, just are more noticable because I didn't feel that the game was as great as I was hoping when I was playing it. That leads to you looking more for flaws.
Well whatever, you're free to like or dislike whatever you want. If a cheap Kirby where you can fly over an entire level is fun for you, that's fantastic.
Cheap? Only for some parts, and the GB games adjusted. You know, things like lots of indoor areas where you don't have room to float over everything (helped by the small screen of a GB), breaking it up into many segements seperated by doors, lots of flying enemies...
So it's not total freedom either way. In fact, unlimited flying only limits the level designers in their creativity.
Limits? I don't know, I was thinking that it forced them to be more creative...
That's usually due to technical restraints. Giving Kirby unlimited flight and having to limit your creativity around that is different.
The level design is better in Kirby 2 than Kirby 64, though, I'd say... it's not awful in Kirby 64, but not as great as the GB titles.

GR... yeah, Mischief Makers is better, because of innovation. But while Mischief Makers was really good, it has some issues too, mostly about length and repetiveness (shake-shake and spin a lot...). Oh, it's definitely a fantastic game, but Kirby 64 doesn't win by a huge amount because both have noticable flaws.

I obviously liked GGA more than either one.

Oh, and I know it's not a platformer really but Mega Man Anniversary Collection for Cube beats all of them, I think. :D
Ah yes, level design... Sorry, Super Star has AWESOME level design.

Ya know, I just LOVE the Great Cave Offensive. It's sort of a gameplay parody of Metroid.

One of the funniest parts of the game was when you threw one of the little guys at another and then they start crying. :D

yes, GR that was one of the best parts of the game, but the ultimate best part of the game was the... SHAKE SHAKE!!!

It's pretty funny, in a cruel way, when you shake and throw the friendly people in towns and take the money that comes out... :)

Kirby 64 could have had level design just as good as the old titles because it's still a sidescroller, but I'd definitely say that it doesn't live up and that that's one of the many issues I have with that game. But as I've said Kirby 64 is flawed in a bunch of little ways... that's just one of the ones you notice most.

You consider it the equal of any previous Kirby game in every way? I just can't agree. I'd definitely take Kirby 2 over it. Kirby 1? It probably is better, but I have good memories of that game... :)

As for spinoffs, Kirby 64 is probably better than Block Ball or Tilt and Tumble, but not as good as Kirby Pinball.
I haven't played Kirby 2 in a while, but it's definitely better than most of them.
I haven't played the SNES games, remember, so the previous Kirby game I had played was 2...

Kirby's Dream Course is fun...
Kirby 64 was fun, it just didn't have as much replayability as its predecessors. My favorite Kirby game was Kirby Super Star, and some runners up are Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Pretty much all the Kirby platformers rule, as well as Dream Course and Pinball. (Okay, I actually haven't played much of Pinball, but...)

As for this new Kirby game, I'll be looking forward to it, definitely. It seems to be reusing the Nightmare in Dream Land graphics, though it doesn't really matter to me. *adds Amazing Mirror to "Must Have" list within the range of San Andreas and the new Zelda*
I'd be good if we could get a real Kirby on the GC, but as long as they keep releasing Kirby games I guess that it's alright.
Yeah, gimmick games like Air Ride are fun, but they usually wear out after some time. Dream Course is one of few exceptions. That game is still a classic.
I played it a lot a few months ago. Very fun and very, very hard. I played some course a dozen times trying to get everything just right so I could sink Kirby in the least amount of shots as I could. Especially on the later course it gets insanely hard.
Kirby Pinball is definitely one of the best of the non-platformer Kirby games. Really good game... Block Ball is also based on a classic premise (Arkanoid/Breakout), but while it's a pretty good game it just isn't quite as fun as other spinoffs. And it also seems a bit less like 'Kirb'. Sure, in Kirby Pinball he doesn't transform. But this was the second Kirby game, after Kirby 1, and Kirby's Adventure and its transformations thing hadn't come out yet, so that's okay... :)

Block Ball felt more like a gimmick... like 'Breakout, with Kirby'. Pinball was better. Tilt n Tumble was fun too, but also didn't feel particularly Kirby-like a lot of the time. For instance it had that stupid balloon thing or whatever it was for a boss and not normal Kirby bosses, and you didn't exactly do much transforming... but the main problem with that game was the lack of any semblance of a difficulty level. Pinball keeps you going because the game saves highscores. Only four highscores, but it's better than nothing...
I didn't like Kirby's Avalanche. It was too complicated for me. It required both strategizing and timing at their extremes, which wasn't something that I could handle. At least not in this situation. A regular game of Tetris will do for me.
Kirby's Avalanche is just re-branded Puyo Puyo, you know.
I love Puyo Puyo.
