Quote:Miyamoto wants new Zelda...
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's design guru who has been responsible for series like Mario and Zelda, stated in the newest issue of Famitsu that he hopes to produce a new game in the Zelda series this year, as well as original episodes in the Mario and Pikmin franchises. The latter two games were already discussed, though the hints of a new Zelda game aren't. This all seems to contradict Nintendo's previous message that 2003 would be a year of new ideas and characters, but is anyone going to argue against a new adventure starring Link?

This year??? Holy shit! And considering how short the development time for WW was (incuding making an impressive new engine), we could have another Zelda game by late 2004/early 2005! That is of course if he plans on using the same engine. Hmm... perhaps they could use the WW engine for the next Mario game and make a more realistic Zelda game to please all of those cry-baby fans. It would be perfect for Mario.

What I'd like to see is a new Mario platformer using the WW engine and a Majora's Mask-type side-story Zelda game using the WW engine but changing a lot of the gameplay, ala MM.

Miyamoto has commented in the past on how the next Mario and Zelda games will be very different from past games in the series, and I assume he was referring to changing the gameplay.

Speculate!
We've heard several times before that new Mario, Zelda, and Pikmin (especially Pikmin) games will probably be coming, so this isn't huge news... its just surprising to see (at least some of) them started so soon. Surprising, and good!

I definitely would like to see a more realistic Zelda game... as for Mario in the Wind Waker engine, why do you think that would be so great? Explain...

I will say that while doing it the same as old versions nice, change is too, so I'll be interested to see where the serieses go.
He doesn't say he wants to make a new Zelda for this year, but that he wants to WORK on one. So don't get all jumpy or anything.
You don't say? Perhaps that's why I said that it wouldn't be out until late 2004/early 2005. Rolleyes

I'm well aware of that, but as you mentioned it's surprising to hear plans so soon. You have a problem with me making a thread about it? Huh? Huh?? We have what, two threads in the Nintendo section of this forum that get replied to every day?

Are you kidding me? The Wind Waker engine is perfect for Mario! Just imagine how much they could add to Mario if it used WW's engine. The world would be a lot more colorful, active, animated, and you would be able to do all sort of crazy things with Mario if it weren't restricted to a more realitic graphical style. Just look at all of the cool stuff that you can do in WW that would be out of place in OoT.
Well it isn't impossible that we will see new additions to those series [in Japan], but this is Nintendo so late 2004/2005 is probably a pretty good estimate. However, there might be a sequel to Pikmin out this year.
Nintendo has been really good with release dates lately. Mario Sunshine made it on time, Metroid Prime made it on time, and Zelda made in on time (in Japan). Wind Waker only took what, two years to make? Much of that time must have been put into making the incredible engine, so I'm sure they could have a new Zelda out by late 2004.
PIKMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are... are you saying that Mario has a realistic graphical style?
It's caroonty realistic. The water looks like real water, the buildings look like real buildings, the trees look like real trees. I'd love to see a more stylized, cartoony Mario game. Something like Mario World meets Yoshi's Island but in 3-D.

And about WW's development time, I was just about right:

Quote:Q: When did development on Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker begin? How long would you estimate development time was?

Miyamoto-san: Right when Majora's Mask ended we already knew that the GameCube platform was going to be our next, so we had to begin planning for that. If you were to actually go back and look at when we were doing experiments on the GameCube hardware itself, it would be more than two and a half years. The reason we were able to show you the more realistic looking Zelda battle at Space World 2000 in the summer was because we had been doing some preliminary experiments with the console prior to completing Majora's Mask. That's why that video existed. It wasn't until afterwards that we had really done work with the director and the programmers to go ahead and create The Wind Waker.

That's extremely impressive. They created an awesome new engine from scratch and managed to make the game several times larger (in terms of area size, at least) than OoT, which had a development time of around three or four years. I'm totally confident that they could make a new Zelda game in less than two years if they decided to use the same engine.
I am, in fact, amazed at how well Nintendo has done in terms of release dates. We got Mario, Metroid, SFA, and Animal Crossing all before the end of the year, and Zelda will be released in the US before E3. Woah. When has that ever happened? There is not one high profile game making it's second playable showing at E3, unless you consider the ever-present rolling game first demoed for N64 a "high-profile" game. Wario World will just miss the cut, but it was EARLY last year. And F-Zero? It was caught only for a second on Nintendo's big screen when Nintendo forgot to cut it from the promo tape. And that's being released less than 1.5 months after E3. Perhaps the reason people are questioning Nintendo's fall 2003 lineup is that this situation has never happened before: the situation when the fall lineup has not been playable before the year's E3. Crazy.

But as for new renditions of Mario and Zelda on Gamecube, I'm all for it, as long as it doesn't force the N2005 to be pushed back into late 2006, making possible a recurrence of that one and a half year gap between Playstation and NWhatever. But if Nintendo keeps up its record of punctuality, I'd be very impressed, and I think it could pull off some very impressive games and still launch in early 2006.
OB1, I could've sworn that wasn't there before... but whatever.
Well it was since I didn't edit that message.

I totally agree. As I said in a previous thread, if making the N2005 come out at the same time as the X-Box 2 and the PS3 means that the next Zelda and Mario games will get pushed over to the N2005 from the GC, I'm all for it. But Nintendo has several dev teams that could be working on more than one Zelda and Mario game, so perhaps we could get another set of Mario and Zelda games for the Cube as well as a new Mario game for the N2005 launch (a new Zelda along with that would be a dream come true, but I don't think it would happen).
Nintendo had a couple tvs set up that alternated in footage between 1080* and F-Zero. But that was only on tape, and it's hard to really count that as being on display at E3. On the whole, I'd agree with you guys completely. Nintendo has done fabulous in getting the games done well and on time.
N2005? Gamecube has been out just over a year, and already, you're all swirming over it like vultures! If all you do is look forward and hope for the future, the future will never come. My policy is sit back and enjoy the GC now, and not "I hope for thirty years from now."
Darunia, calm down. Where's the Goron lullaby when you need it?...anyway, as gamers we all are enjoying the now, the SoAL's, the Metroids, the Zelda bonus disks, etc. But lots of people that follow the industry like to pretend to be analysts, looking at the future plans of a company, dissecting numbers, and getting news that never reaches the masses. That's my reason for worrying that Mario and Zelda may conflict with N200X's launch plans. I must grant you this: I have to watch my focus on the future. If it gets out of hand, I may be lost in the present, unable to enjoy the now...
Apparently some of the OOT bonus disks have already shipped as of yesterday. However, not all. The store I pre-ordered from still don't have their's yet for instance.
Darunia: In order for Nintendo to be able to aggressively compete with Sony and MS in the next generation they must release their new hardware at around the same time as the PS3 and X-Box 2 come out. Both MS and Nintendo lost out big time by releasing their systems a year after the PS2, and they don't want to make that same mistake again, even if it means cutting short the lifespan of their current consoles.

Quote:New Pikmin and Mario Due in 2003?
The recent issue of Famitsu, popular weekly Japanese video game mag, reports Shigeru Miyamoto's hopes to get both Mario 128 and Pikmin 2 out by year’s end. This comes as a surprise to many, seeing how these titles were previously assumed to be in early development stages.

The legendary designer went on to state that another Zelda is intended to hit the Cube, most likely in late 2004. This leaves small room in EAD for the “new and innovative” projects Nintendo claimed to have under way for 2003, directing hopeful fans to look for Nintendo’s non-series based projects elsewhere. Mario and Pikmin this year?? Nice! And Zelda in late 2004? Am I a sage or what! Cool
I hope the next Mario game is the sequel to SM64 that we all want and not some odd game. We already got the new odd Mario with SMS so I hope Shigeru doesn't try to be any more different. I also hope they stick with the title Super Mario 128.
What are you talking about? Some people have complained that SMS is too much like Mario 64, not the other way around. You're weird. Super Mario Sunshine is the perfect sequel to Mario 64. It takes what made that game so great and expands upon it.
Yeah... Mario Sunshine is VERY similar to Mario 64. I don't see how you could think of it as 'odd'... Sunshine is a great game, but definitely very, very similar to Mario 64. I like that, but do hope the next one is more innovative.
Mario Sunshine was a deluxe version of Mario 64, as Miyamoto put it. He also said that the next Mario game will be very different from the last two games.
