Check out Samus overseas!

January 30, 2003 -
It's now been over two months since U.S. Metroid Prime fans first realized their dreams of controlling Samus on the GameCube. Nintendo's release schedule for the awesome adventure called for a North American debut last November, while the rest of the world was forced to simply wait and endure repeated anxiety attacks. The Japanese version of the game is set to ship in the homeland on February 28, 2003, and it almost doesn't seem fair, does it?

Well, perhaps the tables have turned. American gamers must now look upon the following image and invite feelings of envy into their Metroid-obsessed hearts. Below is the box art that Japanese gamers will find packed neatly onto store shelves next month.

This alternate Samus pose is one of our favorites, and we think you'd be crazy not to love it yourself. The orange and blue shades blend nicely to represent both the magma-hot and winter-frozen motifs in the game, as well as simply look pretty damn sweet and force us to lust after the game even more.

Thank you, Nintendo.

If you feel the need to import the Japanese version of the game simply for its cover, we'll understand. Stay tuned to IGNcube as we update this story in the future with photos of site Editor-in-Chief Matt Casamassina snuggling on the couch with his copy wrapped tenderly in his arms.

Metroid Prime Japanese box art.

Very nice. Much better than the U.S. cover, as per usual.
That does look pretty cool, but I still think the American box art looks pretty good.
Are you crazy? The US boxart clearly destroys the Japanase box. There is too much shit going on there. The only thing that sucks about the US box is the ugly ass Nintendo game Cube bar and the REALLY hideous and cheap looking "only for" triangle. Btw, it would have been cool if Nintendo released Prime with a clear orange DVD case.
The U.S. box art sucks ass compared to this.
To be honest I think the little Gamecube bar at the top is very nicely done. I also think the triangle that says "only for" looks fine.

Actually, I think all the title bars this generation look perfectly nice.

However, if you want to complain about an ugly "only for" logo, look at the XBox. That "only for" stamp is just plain ugly, and only fits in like 2 games that have ghetto toxic waste and stamps.

As for this particular box art, I've said before that "noisy" box art is offensive to the eye, and in fact during the N64 era that was my main beef with pretty much all the N64 game box art (especially compaired to Japanese box art). That's not to say it's a bad choice in ALL cases, as I did like the 30 characters all at once shown on the F-Zero X box. Anyway, I have to say that I do like this box art. It isn't nearly as noisy as MGL claims. It has a totally black backdrop as opposed to the hallway in the US box art, but that's replaced with a nice holographic image that looks like a target. So, basically there isn't any more going on in that than the US. However, then we get to Samus. Her pose on the US box is kinda calm and such, like the exploring she does. Her pose on the Japanese box is in mid action. What's she doing? Do you know? Do I know? She's doing something! I'm excited here! It's exciting! In other words, it shows that this is an action packed game. Anyway, both are nice, but I do think that the cool hologram puts the Japanese art way ahead :D. Really...
I share your excitement!
Let's compare the two side-by-side:

Here we have the plain U.S. box art, with Samus thinking about shoes or something. And what's with the lame grey background? Only stupid people could like that. Stupid peope and frenchmen.

And then here we have some kick-ass boxart with Samus jumping out at you and showing us some cool hologram/scanning with the fire of magmoor caverns and the icy chill of pendrana drifts!! It's just so cool! She's ready to kick some ass!!

*refuses to be drawn into a pointless arguement*
But... most of the posting to be had here is in pointless arguments! People like you spoil the fun... :)

Um, they are both good, but yeah, like usual the Japanese one is better... their N64 boxes were always nicer too...
The background of the US box is awesome. The hallway is lonely and mysterious and makes the game feel special. The Japanese cover looks like some cheap ass Acclaim game. Wtf is that? Turok 5? Disgusting.
Hmm, well let's just agree to disagree then.

OB1: I don't agree to that!

MgL: Me neither!
MgL : Human or Troll? :)
People, am I the only one who uses the troll smily? Just say : troll : without the spaces and you get yourself a trollish headhunter tossing the spears of anger at the humans of annoyance, or something. Wow, that analogy died right about when I tried it.

Anyway, it's right there, and ABF of all people should try wanting to use it!
If I am a troll then OB1 is as much as a troll as I am.
Nah, I'm pretty sure MgL actually has those opinions. It's not like he's saying stuff that actually is offensive to the mind to the point where all your pent up anger at that stereotype is unleashed, like nick for instance.
Does it really matter?

They both look good to me, the little black bar on the top of the boxes is a lot better than the neon green bar on the side of N64 boxes. And the little Only For triangle is so small you barely notice it.

By the way, seems you liked the US boxart just fine up until earlier today :D
i really do likeboth box arts...also, i think the US is getting the better of the two WW box arts. which is nice.

neon green bars on N64 games? i always thought it was red...maybe i'm color blind. or do you live in some "other region" where the boxes had green on them?

that's all for now
I like the US box art better... it doesn't so much scream "SAMUS ARAN!!!! METROID PRIME!!! INCLUDING SCANNING FEATURES 4 VISORS!!! MULTITUDE OF WEAPONS ARRAY TO DESTRUCTO!!! PLASMA ICE PULSE!!! VARIA SUIT!!! MISSILES!! ULTIMATE SUPER HYPER MEGA ACTION!!! BUYMEBUYMEBUYME!!!"
the right hand side of the visor is the X-Ray scanner...the lines go in the same pattern.

i'm smart
Box art only matters when it comes to Zelda.
Pff. Zelda fanboy. :shake:

And MgL, how am I a troll? Do I go around the forums here talking about how the Gamecube sucks and drawing pictures of people pooping into them? Come on, boy. You are the perfect example of a troll.
MgL was that guy? Oh yeah, what was up with that anyway?
He's a troll.
:troll:

Happy, DJ?
But that was so obvious! Oh wait, people like it when people are obviously trying to be a stereotype, because it supports their deeply held beliefs in those stereotypes...

Well in that case :troll:
OB1 I was only responding to the "MgL: Troll or Human" comment made earlier in this thread. You're as much as a troll as I am if the basis of the label depends on me criticizing freakin boxart. Oh, and I've only become critical of Nintendo recently after the GBA SP announcement so no I am not a troll.
Ok first of all this whole boxart thing isn't to be taken seriously. Of course I like the Japanese boxart a lot more, but I was joking about the whole stupid people and frenchmen comment.

And secondly, you've been bashing Nintendo stuff ever since you got here, which was before the SP announcement. That would make you a troll if the sole purpose of your existence at this forum is to trash Nintendo.
I think the U.S. box art for Metroid Prime sucks ass mainly because mine has the fucking K-mart logo advertising on the God damn thing. Mad Did that sound bitter? I sure hope it did.
You mean on the plastic wrap they use around it right? You don't mean they actually printed a different version of the cover slip with K-Mart's logo on it do you? I wasn't aware K-Mart was still around...
Here' the story:

My mom was going out of town and I asked her if she could pick up a copy of Metroid Prime bundled with a Wave Bird. It was 5 dollars cheaper than buying the two seperate, so I thought it was a good deal. When I opened it, I soon realized that there were two huge "K-MART EXCLUSIVE! WAVE BIRD INCLUDED!" logos printed on the cover. Every time I take Prime out of its case and put it back in, I have to stare at the crap that is nearly covering up Samus's face.

If you think about it, K-Mart payed me 5 bucks for them to befowl my beloved Metroid by advertising for them. Definately not worth it.
You know what? You could always make a custom cover, or just print an original one with some glossy paper. I know a few people that do that sort of thing. I plan on getting a custom cover for the OoT bonus disk since it will probabaly just come in a paper sleeve like it did in Japan. Then I'll get a DVD case and voila, I'll have a cool case!
Like this:

Thats a really cool cover for OoT GC... looks quite professional. :)
And check out the Japanese Prime commercials.

They're so much better than the American ones. At least it's less confusing since it's pretty much 100% gameplay. I'm sure Prime would have sold at least a little better if they had some better commercials here in the states.
Nice cover. Reminds me of how Software Etc. prints their own covers for announced games and sets them up in a big "coming soon" rack, like the old one they have now for Wind Waker. ...Is that where that's from?

Heh, I remember when everyone thought that just because some amazing director was in charge of hte Prime commercial it was going to rock, and in fact they liked it when it was finally out for a bit. Anyway, here's the thing. It's a COMMERCIAL! You can't make a huge compelling story out of 30 seconds of footage that's aimed at getting you to buy a product. It's impossible! I can't possibly get into the deepness of someone's problems with self expression when they suddenly are "enlightened" by a frickin' product. It totally kills any story 30 seconds can have.

Anyway, as I said I never had a problem with the old cover, I just like the new one better.

Oh, and allow me to say this. I LOVE how the new forum program only stretches the size of the message that had some huge image instead of making us have to horizontally scroll the whole thread. While it does have the weakness of not word-wrapping thread titles...

Yes, its one of my favorite features of VBulletin... I'd seen it at other VBulletin forums I visit, and noticed how nice that feature is, so its great to see here too...
Oh yeah, I just noticed that. Very cool.

BTW that boxart was made by a guy at the ign boards.
Also, there's this to think about. Eventually Nintendo WILL sell GCN Zelda on it's own. Either they decide to keep it as a permanent pack-in for Wind Waker (I doubt it) or the sell it seperatly. They wouldn't go through the work of porting it and adding the extra features if it was JUST going to be a pre-order bonus. Trust me, it'll be available seperatly a bit after Wind Waker is released. Then, you can have your official DVD case sleeve.
They really didn't do all that much with the port. It'll probably become a pack-in with Zelda or even the Gamecube itself a few months after WW comes out. I just can't see them charging people too much for a straight N64 port, so why not just make it a pack-in?
Can't see them charging for a straight port eh? *points to half the GBA game collection*

Really though, your other two options are good ones, ESPECIALLY the GCN pack-in option. That's something that would be great to combat the XBox pack-in games (of which I don't like either, but on the whole Jet Set Radio Future feels good to the public, and my bro who just got a 'Box). I think that maybe the people who pre-ordered afraid of missing the pack-in game would be peeved, but that hasn't stopped Nintendo before, and to be quite honest, I actually would prefer it to be permanently part of the package instead of only a pre-order deal. However, one musn't doubt the possibility of Nintendo selling one of their biggest selling N64 games as a stand-alone game. Do you honestly think they wouldn't do it?
*Points to Capcom, selling RE2 and RE3 NGC ports for $40 each*

Not charging for straight ports, yeah right... Nintendo will charge if they can. I bet that it becomes a retail game sometime after Wind Waker comes out.
Call it blind optimism.

That Capcom thing is ridiculous though.
They did it with RE2 on the N64 (at least they added a few extra files and some options, and the randomize mode of play), and they did it with the RE games on DC. It was just a matter of time before they went to a currently succeeding system with the series.

Of course, lazyfatbum and the brother of one of my friends (actually, he's become my friend too) don't mind at all.

As for our home grown 7-flavor optimist here, it would be nice if he was right, and Nintendo decided to either pack in the game permanently with Wind Waker or pack it in with the Gamecube, but that's not likely to happen.

Oh, OB1, there's one thing about the pack-in with gamecube you neglected. The people who bought it early won't be getting it if it's ONLY a pack-in! Nintendo will want to cater to them as well, so guess what? That's right, even if it becomes a pack-in, it's still going to be sold seperatly for the audience of gamers who didn't buy the combo pack. The only real salvation is to keep it packed with Wind Waker. Will that be the case?
That would be the best solution.
That Japanese box DOES look significantly cooler than ours; but I hardly see why it's such a big deal. It's not like it's made of platinum; or its holographic so when u tilt it sideways u see what she looks like underneath that suit.
Nope, not a big deal at all.
Nothing here ever is a big deal. This is a Nintendo forum.
If you wanna see what she looks like under the suit, go to the "Guess the Game" thread, page 2.
