OSAKA (Nikkei)--Nintendo Co. (7974.OK) has decided not to release a new video game console to follow its current GameCube for the time being, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Tuesday edition.

The home-use game machine and software developer will instead diversify games and sell newly developed peripherals mainly for the GameCube. It will make games for the current model more appealing, while rivals Sony Corp. (6758.TO) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) plan to debut high-performance next-generation consoles that can be also used for non-game content such as movies and music.

Nintendo plans to release peripherals as early as 2005. Although details aren't yet known, these devices are expected to diversify playing styles by improving the gaming experience and connections with hand-held units rather than improve graphics and sound quality.

The decision to withhold the release of a new console was made because while the game market is contracting and becoming more diverse, "customers are fully satisfied with the performance of the current model," President Satoru Iwata said.

Nintendo will continue in-house development of a new home-use game machine for release in the future, but for the next two or three years will add functions to the GameCube.

OH NO, NINTENDO AREN'T GOING TO RELEASE ANOTHER SYSTEM!!!*

*For the next two or three years.
:confused2
More interesting is this post by someone who's read the original Nikkei article:

Quote:The original Nikkei piece basically says Nintendo is going to concentrate on appealing to kids and not fighting the same "digital appliance" fight Sony and MS are fighting, pointing at the DS being more of a toy and not featuring "high performance chips". Also relevant is this:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"There is no way we are going to win competing in the same arena as electronics and computer makers," a senior Nintendo official said. "Our best option is to build on our software development abilities."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember: Their words. Not mine.
Alright, I think I've composed myself enough to where I think I can make a post.

This...this is a bad move. Very bad. If they release a year are so behind the PS2 and Xbox they have virtually no chance of going anywhere. The hardcore fans will buy the peripherals but probably few else. It's a bad decision; people don't want add-ons to old products, they want brand new products.
X-Box Next and PS3 won't be out till '06 is the thinking now, for one. For another I very, very strongly doubt that Nintendo is not going to make a N5... yes, they like peripherals, but is that a good idea? Peripherals never sell well... games which require peripherals only sell okay if they include said peripheral. And people only want so many weird games with strange controls, they want the latest and greatest cool-graphics (and most advanced gameplay) games too...

I also just have trouble believing that they think people think graphics are good enough. Well maybe they do today but they won't in a couple of years when they see what they can do... I don't think even Nintendo is THIS stupid. I don't believe it. Especially given how they've said they can't fall behind Sony and launching late was a big mistake...

Now maybe they will do this for the next two years (to early '06 when maybe the next consoles will start to come out), I could see that... Nintendo likes to do odd things after all. But I do think that when the other two come out Nintendo will be there too... and hopefully with a console and a plan that will take North America, and what North American gamers want, into much better account. Nintendo can't coast on its base and ignore what the market really wants (on numerous issues) forever...
All the big websites like IGN, Gamespot, TXB Rolleyes are reporting how Nintendo is not going to make another new system. Of course if they actually READ the article they wouldn't make that mistake.

Ahhh, internet gaming "journalism". :D
At first I was wondering why the hell Nintendo would wait so long when they had recently said they will not be last to market next-generation, but then I realized the rumors of Sony holding off on the PS3 mean MS will hold off on the XBox2 giving Nintendo quite some time before the next-generation begins. This isn't the end-of-the-world news that a lot of websites are making it out to be. What surprises me is the talk about accessories. Screw the accessories Nintendo, bring us more games!
Two years to the next Nintendo console is what is EXPECTED, that wouldn't be news at all. Three would be stupid and unrealistic given how many times Nintendo has said that being a year behind was a big problem last generation. Where do they get this stuff.. is this one of those "expert reports" that keep saying Nintendo will fail, and have been for years? Rolleyes

Now in the next two years seeing more silly and probably not too useful add-ons for Gamecube, that I can believe given what Nintendo is doing these days. Why so many accessories and games that use them? Yes, I know there are nice uses for the GBA link... but make it a minor thing not a major part of your platform, because that's what it is -- a limited-use feature. And the E-Reader... same thing really... I want games. Online games preferably. :) And with better advertising, like last christmas season...

Oh, and they should use the black Gamecube in the ads not the purple one.
Well I can't say I'm too surprised. Those rumors about Nintendo making niche products with first-party-only support might be coming true. No immediate plans for a GC successor? Oh boy. Can any of you really imagine Nintendo making games for Sony and MS, though? I sure can't. But then again I couldn't imagine Sega doing the same thing either...
This is quite the contradictory article though, eh? From IGN:

Quote:February 09, 2004 - During a recent interview with Nintendo Official Magazine Europe, Nintendo designer and director Shigeru Miyamoto commented on a number of hot topics.

The figurehead acknowledged that the company is already in development with the successor to GameCube and said that it would enable Nintendo to realize "brand new and enjoyable ideas." He refused to comment further on the machine.

Queried on the status of Mario 128, Miyamoto apologized for not being able to divulge much on the game. He went on to say that with the game Nintendo is creating new elements not found in other titles and that if the publisher was to show them off they would be copied by competitors.

Finally, Miyamoto reiterated that another Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker game was in development and that details would be revealed later this year.

This is how I see it:

a) Nintendo is just saying that they won't release the N5 soon because they want to fool MS and Sony, and will have it out at the same time as the PS3 and XB2.

b) Nintendo is being stupid and will release the N5 a year or more after the PS3 and XB2, using lame peripherals to add more life to the GC.

c) Nintendo is quitting the hardware business and Miyamoto made this comment before he knew that Nintendo was going to make this announcement.
C is unlikely. A is probably what they are aiming for, but they probably know that they could get delayed and need to have something in place in case they have to launch a little (I am sure they won't go a year) late...

Quote:"brand new and enjoyable ideas."

Nintendo says this all the time now. It scares me somewhat given that what we've gotten from it is connectivity and the E-Reader... well, and the DS.
Turns out it was just a mistranslation of things and Nintendo plans to have their next console out at the same time, or sooner, than Sony and MS. The accessories thing is true, though, but Nintendo won't say anymore about it.
I thought it'd be something like that... 2-3 years? That's not really a delay probably more like an estimation... after all 2 years is what we are expecting right now and Sony's setting the tone and they easily could delay some... I wouldn't bet on a whole year, but several months is very possible.

And as for accessories... what? As I said there've already been some for Cube/GBA... wonder what else they have in store...

That's good to know.
Peripherals, eh? I was wondering when they'd make use of those ten billion slots under the GC...
They've already used the modem and high speed ports... the only one left is that tiny little thing above the modem port, and what could you fit there when you factor in the GB Player?
The GC DD!!
Hey, yeah!!
... and have it connect to some external system on the port on the side or something with a cable? :D

Oh, I know -- a cable that goes outside and connects to the GC DS, which attaches to the bottom of the GB Player! Great idea!
Orrr... you don't connect the GB Player at the same time!!
Bah, all add-ons must be able to be attached simultaneously!

Not having a cartridge slot hurts a lot... you can't put an add-on in there...
Who says all add-ons need to be connected at the same time?
Me! ... and the fact that swapping them would be a pain... doesn't the GB Player have screws to connect it to the GC?
Yes it does.
It'd be a pain then...

But all the better for Nintendo, they could outdo the Sega CD and the 32X!
Woo! Peripheral Party!!
Was this supposed to be some kind of Sony sponsored misinformation just to get Nintendo's shares to drop ?
Who knows... it was a convenient mistranslation, though...
Yes, folks, it's the rare Good IGN Article! To be specific, a editor's roundtable about this article and the DS... and I agree with a lot of what they have to say! OB1 will too I bet... :)

http://cube.ign.com/articles/491/491419p1.html
Yeah, I pretty much agree with what they said.
Yeah, I did too and thought you would... :)
Yes.
Hehe, Nintendorks is funny. Originally I thought the article said 2004 (as you know from that topic I posted and then deleted), but it's actually 2005.

Quote:Crazy Rumor: Gamecube successor to appear at E3 2005

Fast on the heels of news that Nintendo's next console will be released in 2005 or 2006, a report from Mainichi Shimbun suggest that Nintendo might actually show this console at next year's Electronics Entertainment Expo. Imagine that! Unveiling a console at the world's largest gaming trade show a year or two before it's released! Thanks for the killer scoop, Mainichi Shimbun.

As you can clearly read in the article, Nintendo is striving for the new console to "provide an experience that can be enjoyed by adults, children, or women." Assuming Mainichi Shimbun's report proves true, adults and women everywhere will get their first look at the new console next May.

You deleted that post? I didn't notice... did you delete my reply too?

And yes, Nintendorks is funny often. That one's good. :)
I deleted the whole thread.
Huh...
Nice interview. Looks like we won't be hearing anything about Mario 128 in the near future, eh? *sigh*

Well I just hope WW2 is playable at E3.
Nintendo... this better actually be special... and not another water pack...
At least you've got to say they're consistent...

Quote:- Nintendo of Japan spokesperson Yasuhiro Minagawa confirmed that a new peripheral is under development for GameCube, which is a new adapter to enhance gameplay and connectivity, the distribution will take place in 2005

Magicbox.
*waits for E-printer*
Enhancing connectivity! I can hardly wait! ... in that 'morbidly wondering what they will do next' kind of way...
It is kinda funny that Sony and MS have been more successful with minor peripherals than Nintendo has, don't you think? The Eyetoy is popular, Karaoke Revolution is popular, the X-Box Music Maker is popular, etc. All Nintendo has is a stupid card reader and a link cable. Weee.
True, that is ironic... and must say something about Nintendo. But they've always had issues with addons... see the 64DD, SNES CD, Super Scope, ROB, etc...
And Sony even copied some ideas for Eye Toy that Nintendo had with Talent Studio, which they never released here.
Sony doesn't do good quality or innovation, but they can copy pretty well...
Yeah they're really good at that.
Unfortunately for Nintendo.
There is no Revolution. It's all in your imagination...
