Which one of these absurdly addictive series do you prefer? Conquering the world, or the mayors office? Building Chariots or Residential Zones? Irrigating or Bulldozing? Building roads or...building roads?
Uh...I think I'll sit this one out. :hmm:

Oh well. *votes for Simcity*
Civilization by a ridiculously wide margin.
I have never, ever liked Sim City. It was neat to design a city with the editor but I found the game itself to be a major chore at best. I didn't like SC1, I didn't like SC2000, and I never wasted a second on the other two.

In addition, while everyone I know considers The Sims to be one of the best games ever, I played it only once and came away wondering what the hell the point was. It wasn't fun at all.

Conversely, I have wasted more hours and built more empires than I can remember with all three Civ games. Civilization is the ONLY PC game I have ever loved. I have all three installed on my computer and I play them all periodically, just for kicks.
SimCity is fun for a while, and then it gets repetitive. And you can't win, you just build forever... fun, but it pales in comparison to the greatness of Civilization, easily the best Turn-Based strategy series ever. I have spent so many hours playing the Civ games (Civ II the most)... it hit the elusive 'Just One More Turn' syndrome (you know the one, where at 10pm you say "just one more turn" and then look up and see its four in the morning...) dead on.

As for The Sims, I haven't played it but it looks very boring. I'd say SimCity is the better of the two.

If you've never played it, then you have no right saying one game is better than it.

The Sims is addictive, and most of us don't know why it is. Maybe it's the whole concept of getting your Sims all built up to move up the career ladder. Maybe it's building that gigantic house and filling it with expensive stuff. Maybe it's the ability to bang the next door neighbor...or anyone else you compliment and hug enough.

It's a fun game for those who get into it. If you don't get it, then you just don't get it, it's not the game for you. When I play, I start up a Sim and get him all built up to as high as he/she can go, then lose interest for a while.

Between the three though, Civilization still ranks highest.
I have seen it played and read numerous articles on the game. It sounds like for a little while it'd be enjoyable, especially if you like making and decorating houses. And managing every detail of your Sims' lives... but to me that sounds deathly boring after a short amount of time...
Sim City...because I have never played Civilizition before. But I want to, it looks real fun.

The Sims, meh, I'm just not too into it. Too boring, and repetetive I think. Don't have the patience.
I don't think there are demos of any of the three Civ games, but there are demos of Alpha Centauri and its expansion if you want to find them... (remember, Alpha Centauri is Civ, Futuristic Version) it gives a good taste of Civ-style gameplay. Just, obviously, different because of its futuristic look... which is more than just a skin. It really affects everything. Oh, and AC, unlike Civ, has real rolling terrain (Civ just has block terrain -- Plain, Grassland, Hill, Mountain, River...), and unit design (you get parts and can put them together to form a wide variety of vehicles), unlike Civ. And AC also was the first game in the series to have the nation borders drawn on the map. :)

Oh, and it was Brian Reynolds' last game at Firaxis...
I've only seriously played Sim City 2000 of the series, but it was one of the best pre-N64 video gaming experiences of my life. So many hours; so many many cities named after gradeschool crushes. I've never played Civilization, so Sim City gets me vote.
I wouldnt make comparisons honnestly I like both.
I would like to note that all three people who voted for SimCity haven't played Civilization. GR, you believe my point a bit better now?
Quote:As for The Sims, I HAVEN'T PLAYED IT but it looks very boring. I'd say SimCity is the better of the two.

Erm
I'd try The Sims but I don't think it has a demo and no way would it be worth my money.

And anyway what I have done is played a lot of Maxis Sim games before... I know The Sims isn't quite like any of the other Sim games, as unlike them it has people management... but yes maybe I would have a better understanding of why people like it so much if I played it.
The Sims is a portal into hell!
Yea, The Sims doesn't do much for me. I've seen it played up close and personal, and I really just don't care to play it first hand.
Oh yeah, that's right, as I said I have watched people playing both The Sims and SC4... not for long amounts of time I admit, but a little. Enough to know that The Sims looks boring... I think I could only take so much furnishing a house and telling my sim when to use the bathroom. :)
The Sims took a lot of time and dedication to get anywhere, so I just cheated and got lots of money so I could build really cool houses.
Me too, except I quit after I built my house.
That's probably what I'd do.
If it waisnt for the fact that you spend more time trying to keep your needs bar full then actually doing what you want with your sim. SC4 is a much better game then any of the sims games.
Civ = Good
SimCity = God

Prove me wrong bitches.

Very well. How many examples would you like? The list goes on and on.
Simcity is just plain awesome, especially SC2000 and SC4. I don't know how many hours I've spent building cities.
But comparing it to a series you've barely played and saying it's better is idiotic!

And Smoke, give us reasons. :)
But...but Simcity is super-fun!
I'll just ignore you now. You are being stupid.

I'm much more interested to hear the reasoning of the people who voted for SimCity and HAVE played a bunch of Civ. Of the five votes for simcity three people said they've never played civ, one vote I don't know who it was or why, and one was Smoke...

So Smoke, how is SimCity better than Civ?
Quote:I'll just ignore you now. You are being stupid.

That was my explanation in silly-speak. Here's my explanation in smart-speak:

Simcity is better, to me, for the simple fact that over the years SC has and remains to be one of my favorite PC series that I've played. Few can match it. Even SC3, which I consider to be the worst of the bunch, I had a lot of fun with and spent hours playing. I've spent at least a hundred hours playing all the games, likely much more than that. Civ would have to be the absolute best series of all time to be able to put a dent in the massive amounts of nostalgia I have and of the hours I still spend playing Simcity. That's why I voted for Simcity.
What kind of computer do you need to play SimCity 4? A non-shitty one?

Civ is my second-favorite PC series of all time, right after Warcraft.

And my "you are being stupid" stands. That is until you play a Civ game a reasonable amount.
Quote:What kind of computer do you need to play SimCity 4? A non-shitty one?

I'm running a 1GHZ AMD and a GeForce 3 Titanium and it works just fine for me. A few slowdowns here and there. If you turned everything off [or down] you could get to work alright with less than that.

Quote:And my "you are being stupid" stands. That is until you play a Civ game a reasonable amount.

Whatever.
I only need one reason, SimCity 2000 was infinitly more engrossing to me then Civilization 2. I'd play it at night and before I knew it it was dawn.

No, there is no way to "win" SC2k (Well actually there is one way but even then the game goes on) but that's not the point of the game. The way Will Wright the creator of the series explains it is SimCity (and The Sims as well) aren't so much games as they are toys. Whereas say baseball is a game you play with a ball, SimCity is the ball. It's up to you to decide what you want to do with it. Some people like this, others don't. It's simply a matter of taste.

And as for my comment "Prove me wrong bitches." I don't see how you're going to prove my completely subjective opinion wrong. :shakeit:
Sim City is about as exciting as watching a stock ticker.

My words are backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
Long live Sim City 2000!
Quote:Whatever.

I'm not saying that you'd like Civ more, I'm just saying that to make a truly informed decision you must have more experience with it before definitively judging it.

And Smoke... I like to be able to win. SC (and 2k) were engrossing for a while but then they got old... it's never gotten that way with Civ II. It's still just about as good as it was years ago.
I could never get into any of the new newer Sim incarnations. SC2000 was just so miraculous for it's time, and so addictive...and I have no idea why. The newer ones should technically be much better, but I couldn't get into them.

I also was a huge fan of Sim Tower. Both that and SC2000 owned my 5th grade year.
Yes, I agree... SC2K was revolutionary and a massive change. SC3k and 4 are poor in comparison... but I don't know what they could have done, SC2k really did everything... oh, you can add more, but does adding more really make the game *BETTER* in the long run?

Oh, and yes, SimTower is one of the best of the non-City Sim games.
Civ all the way
Quote:SC3k and 4 are poor in comparison...

Hey, don't talk smack about SC4!
Come on, read it again and take it in context! You cannot deny what I meant.
I'd say that SC4 is at least as good and as much fun as SC2000.
Innovation. Read what I said! SC2K was an amazingly innovative game! 3 and 4 don't come anywhere close.
:far-out:
I'm sorry, Great Rumbler, but SC2000 was the first of it's kind...SC3 & 4 are just with prettier graphics, and not as addictive.
Exactly. If you played each one after the other you should understand what I mean. SimCity was a very good game. It had issues, however, starting with the restriction to 3x2 blocks... SC2k totally revolutionized the game and improved it many times over. It was almost a different game it was so much improved. In comparison SC3k made a few lame additions and a few things removed. Now SC4 definitely improved from SC3k, but even comparing it to SC2? Insanity. Total insanity.

You DID play the first, then the second, then the third, then the fourth, in that order, right? How could you not get this point?
In terms of innovation SC4 does lack compared to what SC2000 did, but it terms of greatness and funocity [a word I just made up] it's just as much so as SC2000. Of course, others might not think so.
When a game is innovative, and the innovation works, it's remembered as great -- frequently greater than games that improved on it. Think Super Mario Brothers... IMO Simcity 2000 is one of those games... though the original Simcity is obviously the most innovative of the series, there wasn't really much before that to compare it to so I don't know if that counts...

A more proper analogy is to compare them to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, the first was innovative, the second was just an improvement of an already fun and successful concept.

SimCity was innovative, it spawned a genre. SC2K was simply an improvement, as was the case with all following SimCities.

Before anyone asks, yes, I've played SimCity 1 through 4, so my opinion is sound.
