Quote: From the Commanding Officer at MWSS-171 to his Marines.

Marines and Sailors,

As we approach the end of the year I think it is important
to share a few thoughts about what you've accomplished directly,
in some cases, and indirectly in many others. I am speaking about
what the Bush Administration and each of you has contributed by wearing
the uniform, because the fact that you wear the uniform contributes
100% to the capability of the nation to send a few onto the field to
execute national policy. As you read about these achievements you are
a part of I would call your attention to two things:

1. This is good news that hasn't been fit to print or report on TV.

2. It is much easier to point out the errors a man makes when he makes
the tough decisions, rarely is the positive as aggressively pursued.

Since President Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1...

....... the first battalion of the new Iraqi Army has graduated and is on
active duty.

....... over 60,000 Iraqis now provide security to their fellow citizens.

....... nearly all of Iraq's 400 courts are functioning.

....... the Iraqi judiciary is fully independent.

....... on Monday, October 6 power generation hit 4,518 megawatts-exceeding
the prewar average.

....... all 22 universities and 43 technical institutes and colleges are
open, as are nearly all primary and secondary schools.

....... by October 1, Coalition forces had rehabed over 1,500 schools - 500
more than scheduled.

....... teachers earn from 12 to 25 times their former salaries.

....... all 240 hospitals and more than 1200 clinics are open.

....... doctors salaries are at least eight times what they were under
Saddam.

....... pharmaceutical distribution has gone from essentially nothing to 700
tons in May to a current total of 12,000 tons.

....... the Coalition has helped administer over 22 million vaccinations to
Iraq's children.

....... a Coalition program has cleared over 14,000 kilometers of Iraq's
27,000 kilometers of weed-choked canals which now irrigate tens of thousands
of
farms. This project has created jobs for more than 100,000 Iraqi men and
women.

....... we have restored over three-quarters of prewar telephone services
and over two-thirds of the potable water production.

....... there are 4,900 full-service telephone connections. We expect 50,000
by year-end.

....... the wheels of commerce are turning. From bicycles to satellite
dishes to cars and trucks, businesses are coming to life in all major cities
and towns.

....... 95 percent of all prewar bank customers have service and first-time
customers are opening accounts daily.

....... Iraqi banks are making loans to finance businesses.

....... the central bank is fully independent.

....... Iraq has one of the worlds most growth-oriented investment and
banking laws.

....... Iraq has a single, unified currency for the first time in 15 years.

....... satellite TV dishes are legal.

....... foreign journalists aren't on 10-day visas paying mandatory and
extortionate fees to the Ministry of Information for "minders" and other
government spies.

....... there is no Ministry of Information.

....... there are more than 170 newspapers.

....... you can buy satellite dishes on what seems like every street corner.

....... foreign journalists (and everyone else) are free to come and go.

....... a nation that had not one single element - legislative, judicial or
executive - of a representative government, now does.

....... in Baghdad alone residents have selected 88 advisory councils.
Baghdad's first democratic transfer of power in 35 years happened when
the city council elected its new chairman.

....... today in Iraq chambers of commerce, business, school and
professional organizations are electing their leaders all over the country.

....... 25 ministers, selected by the most representative governing body in
Iraq's history, run the day-to-day business of government.

....... the Iraqi government regularly participates in international events.

Since July the Iraqi government has been represented in over two dozen
international meetings, including those of the UN General Assembly, the
Arab League, the World Bank and IMF and, today, the Islamic Conference
Summit.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today announced that it is reopening
over 30 Iraqi embassies around the world.

....... Shia religious festivals that were all but banned, aren't.

....... for the first time in 35 years, in Karbala thousands of Shiites
celebrate the pilgrimage of the 12th Imam.

....... the Coalition has completed over 13,000 reconstruction projects,
large and small, as part of a strategic plan for the reconstruction of Iraq.

....... Uday and Queasy are dead - and no longer feeding innocent Iraqis to
the zoo lions, raping the young daughters of local leaders to force
cooperation, torturing Iraq's soccer players for losing games, or murdering
critics.

....... children aren't imprisoned or murdered when their parents disagree
with the government.

....... political opponents aren't imprisoned, tortured, executed, maimed,
or are forced to watch their families die for disagreeing with Saddam.

....... millions of long suffering Iraqis no longer live in perpetual terror.

....... Saudis will hold municipal elections.

....... Qatar is reforming education to give more choices to parents.

....... Jordan is accelerating market economic reforms.

....... the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded for the first time to an Iranian
-- a Muslim woman who speaks out with courage for human rights, for
democracy
and for peace.

....... Saddam is gone.

....... Iraq is free.

....... President Bush has not faltered or failed.

....... Yet, little or none of this information has been published by the
Press corps that prides itself on bringing you all the news that's
important.

Iraq under US lead control has come further in six months than Germany
did in seven years or Japan did in nine years following WWII. Military
deaths from fanatic Nazi's, and Japanese numbered in the thousands and
continued for over three years after WWII victory was declared.

It took the US over four months to clear away the twin tower debris, let
alone attempt to build something else in its place.

Now, take into account that Congress fought President Bush on every
aspect of his handling of this country's war and the post-war
reconstruction;
and that they continue to claim on a daily basis on national TV that this
conflict has been a failure.

Taking everything into consideration, even the unfortunate loss of our
brothers and sisters in this conflict, do you think anyone else in the world
could have accomplished as much as the United States and the Bush
administration in so short a period of time?

These are things worth writing about. Get the word out. Write to someone
you think may be able to influence our Congress or the press to tell the
story.

Above all, be proud that you are a part of this historical precedent.

God Bless you all and God Bless America.

From the Commanding Officer at MWSS-171 to his Marines.

It speaks for itself.
It'd be a lot easier to read if you used a smaller font you know...

Heh, sounds just like propaganda commanders would give their soldiers. Conviently ignoring the more important facts. :)

How about the ~450 dead American soldiers? The thousands of innocent Iraqis killed during the war? The tens or hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children killed by the sanctions (which were a good idea because they worked very well in stopping military buildup in Iraq, but should have been implemented in a way that didn't lead to mass deaths because of lack of medicines and supplies in hospitals...)? The ever-growing hatred of the Americans in Iraq? Etc, etc, etc...

Which is different how, from the liberal media propaganda that ignores all of these facts?

The only time liberals expect perfection is when it's from someone they don't like... For everyone else, they make excuses.

Quote:That's the least we can do when we were the ones who destroyed most of them...

I think you ignored a very significant portion of that block of text you quoted.

Quote:This has absolutely nothing to do with the war on terror.

The hell it doesn't. Our handling of Iraq is promoting reform among it's neighbors. There is no more method both effective and peaceful way of fighting terrorism then reform.

Quote:Tell that to the American people... or if you're just talking about foreign policy, the Afghans... I think they have a different opinion on that...

There will always be a portion of America that hates this war and everyone who supports it. So what?

As for Afghanistan, I agree, we're slipping a bit. I have faith that we'll get it under control again soon.

Wow. How ignorant. Read a history book that didn't come from a public school once in awhile. Also, try reading all of the text you quoted.

Quote:How about the ~450 dead American soldiers? The thousands of innocent Iraqis killed during the war?

What about them? Those are all very unfortunate, but the results more than justify it.

This proves why a little counterpropaganda is necessary.
ABF is one of Saddam's boys, he's bashing everything that we've done so far! Get him!

I shrunk your text size. :)

Quote:Which is different how, from the liberal media propaganda that ignores all of these facts?

No, about the fact that there are more important facts out there. And it's not like the "liberal media" is so great either... they definitely support the war effort pretty strongly... and as for them looking a lot at the violence, that's just normal media behavior to prefer the car crash to the power plant opening.

Quote:The only time liberals expect perfection is when it's from someone they don't like... For everyone else, they make excuses.

What I'd expect is that when you start something you finish it. As in, Bush started Afghanistan. That war I think was much, much more justified. The Taliban were clearly strongly supporting a group that attacked the US. Taking them out was justified I'd say. But we had to stick with it! We had to send in the troops as peacekeepers in large numbers and secure the country and prevent the warlords from reasserting control. We didn't do that. The warlords are in control again. The nation is very far from stable. And we have forgotten about it. Starting Iraq when there were far, far more pressing major concerns we have to deal with in Afghanistan was a major, major mistake.

Quote:I think you ignored a very significant portion of that block of text you quoted.

Sure we've made some progress from when we took over, that much is obvious... I'm just pointing out that the problems are still very significant and the terrorism won't go away by us adding more judges.

Quote:The hell it doesn't. Our handling of Iraq is promoting reform among it's neighbors. There is no more method both effective and peaceful way of fighting terrorism then reform.

Saudi Arabia, maybe. Jordan, somewhat possible. But Qatar? I don't think so. They have a progressive king. He has been a strong supporter of the US actually... we have a major air base there now that wasn't there a few years ago. But he didn't liberalize the nation because of us, he did it because of him and his wife... and started a few years ago on it. :)

Quote:There will always be a portion of America that hates this war and everyone who supports it. So what?

As for Afghanistan, I agree, we're slipping a bit. I have faith that we'll get it under control again soon.

I meant his numerous abysmal failures in domestic policy.

And Afganistan slipped because once we "won" Bush stopped caring. I mean, no nice pretty explosions and he loses intrest in days...

Quote:Wow. How ignorant. Read a history book that didn't come from a public school once in awhile. Also, try reading all of the text you quoted.

I know that while there were some problems in Germany and Japan, it wasn't like this. Violence? Yes, there was some, particluarly in outlying areas (islands, etc)... but constant violence throughout the nations? No, it just was not like it is in Iraq.

Quote:"This has absolutely nothing to do with the war on terror."

Huh? It has everything to do with it... it has to do with how Bush hates the UN and will not do anything about the UN. If he had stuck with targeted UN sanctions and waited for the inspectors to finish he would have seen that Iraq has no WMD. He couldn't do that of course because then he wouldn't have an excuse for war, so he says that the UN is irrelevant...

And as for deaths during the sanctions, that isn't directly connected to the war on terror, but again, Bush's attitude towards the UN definitely affected how they acted towards Iraq in the last few years.

Quote:This proves why a little counterpropaganda is necessary.

The Iraqis won't be satisfied until we are gone, I think...
That list provides a good counterpoint to a lot of the stuff some media outlets have been pushing about how bad the war is. Of course I watch Fox News Channel, so I get to hear about some of the good news.
Whats the difference between hype and fact?

The Sunni triangle issue is not resolved and casualties still build up.

As for thing being all nice and good I think you have to ask the Iraiqis themselves weither it is great as they are the ones living in it. Last time I heard from Iraqis on the streets they were not very happy. Crime is very bad and the streets of baghdad were dangerous and still are. People are still riding bikes loaded with bombs.

Sure it is great that the good things are represented but when you got a biased media and I can say just about every form of journalism has some bias, On one side you got a group that will nag about every little scuffle and then on the other side you got the ones who will ignore a nuclear blast and toute how that it is so great to live in Iraq.

In canada the canadian media hates the guts out of air canada and will nitpick and exaderate at any moment just to hurt their corporate rivals.
We have Iraq in three threads at the same time right now...
You're all batshit. That's all I gots to say.

Wait, no. Let's make this constructive.

I'm facing an insane Arab girl on the topic of "Was there a good reason to go into Iraq" next thursday in french class. I'm on the Pro side with Italian_Pyro whereas she's with another girl on the Con side. Give me arguments.
