Full Version: Why does wall jumping ALWAYS suck?!

I HATE how wall jumping is done in 3D games! They give you a corridor to jump straight up, and just as you FINALLY after like 10 minutes get the timing down to wall jump (it's NEVER as easy as just hitting the jump button rapidly when ya hit the wall to quickly find out when in the sequence it occurs, oh no), you end up finding out you need to HIT THE WALL AT EXACTLY THE RIGHT ANGLE AT THE START TO KEEP FROM THROWING YOURSELF OUT OF THE LITTLE CORRIDOR AND DOWN A FRICKIN' RAVINE TO YOUR DEATH! Wall jumping should AUTO-STRAIGHTEN!
I found the wall-jumping in PoP to be near-perfect, and I only screwed up a jump once. After a few minutes of wall-jumping it became second nature to me. I also found it to be very forgiving since even my little nephew did it really well. And if you mess up, use the rewind button! That's what it's for.

All you need to do is aim the analog stick to the direction you want to jump, and then press the jump button. It's so easy.
Except I need to wall jump just to get to the frickin' knife. I can't get up there because I can't figure out the right moment to hit A. If I hit it too soon or too late, I fall instantly. That's not forgiving at all. Fortunatly, I managed to get the rebound JUST RIGHT over and over, and then I got the wrong angle apparently, though I couldn't tell, and I killed myself via wall jumping RIGHT OUT of that passage and into a pit. Get out of here OB1, you'll just belittle me since that's what you do. You and your little "Some kid I think sucks can do it, so you must suck. I'm a jerk. Neh neh neh." attitude, which I state Jonny Bravo style. I want someone who will actually help me.
Do I need to start putting people in time out, or do I have to go all-out and revoke dessert and TV priveleges for a week?
I was just ranting about wall jumping sucking is all. Then OB1 made fun of me. Then I over reacted and attacked him for it. That's all.

(He had it coming a LONG time now anyway though :D.)
I'm sorry but you really do have to suck at platform-type games if you have trouble wall jumping in PoP.

It's not the fault of the game, it's the fault of the player. That's quite a big ego you have there if you think it's "the game's fault".

It's not my fault that you suck! All I was saying is that it's not the game's fault that you suck at jumping, and I even gave you simple directions for wall jumping. Then you insulted me, so I insulted you back. Baby.
Yes, they are TOO simple. All you said was "jump when you hit the wall". What do you think I've been doing? I've been hitting A as HARD and FAST as I can when I hit the wall and NOTHING HAPPENS. Everything else works fine, but WHEN during the wall hit should I hit A? Metroid 3's wall jumping ALSO took forever for me to learn. That was a little different, but it took learning timing that wasn't intuitive. Should I hit it AFTER I hit the wall? Should I hit A right when I start to fall, like in Super Mario 64? Shoudl I hit A just BEFORE hitting the wall? Shoudl I do what I've been doing and hit a over and over again during the whole wall hitting sequence?
Well you must have been doing it only one way without experimenting if you're still having trouble with it. You're not supposed to press jump the split second that you touch a wall, you do it a split second after you move the analog stick in the direction you want to go(which is what I said the first time). Actually it's a lot like Super Metroid's jumping, only much easier. Jump, direct, jump. Mario 64's and SM's wall jumping took me a while to learn but I found PoP's to be easy. Perhaps the training I got from Mario 64 and SM helped, but whatever the case is I found it really simple. Just jump like you did in Super Metroid, and don't do it too fast. And if you're hitting the button too hard then you must be trying too much. You need to be relaxed.
Wall Jumping in SMS isn't SUPER hard... well, except for some parts... but the controls aren't too bad, it's the layouts of the puzzles in the game. :)

Oh, it's not wall-jumping, but that stupid spin jump in Metroid Fusion was very hard to learn.
Heh, it's all about the rhythm. The wall jumping in SMS is tough to learn, but easy to pull off once you figure it out.
With the spin jump, which is something I found EASY, so you suck! Kidding, I'm not a jerkB1, kidding there too OB1. Anyway, just jump right as you are coming down from the last one, so you jump, go down just a little, and jump again.

You go down a little? I just pressed the d-pad in the opposite direction as soon as I hit a wall, and then the split-second after I hit the d-pad I pressed the jump button. PoP is easier than that since they give you a little more time to make it. But overall the wall jumping between the two games is very similar.
Oh I was talking about space jumping, the thing ABF was saying he had a problem with, and the thing I thought you were addressing (and bravo on the detail you went into to help him :D). Wall jumping I do the same way, since that's the only way to do it in that game.
And the instruction in the game just say hit A the second I hit the wall, nothing about using the stick, and when I did manage to kill myself via wall jump, I didn't even use the control stick.
Meh, I didn't feel like explaining it to ABF.

And don't pay attention to the instruction manual. Just do what I told you and experiment a bit.
You didn't tell me anything though! And I mean the game itself. The in-game tutorial messeges. I already knew I had to hit it at just the right time. You need to tell me WHAT time if you wish to help me. I'll eventually get it. I just wish it wasn't so frickin' hard for a company to do decent wall jumping. Why can't they just open up the time I have to hit A so that I can do it the WHOLE time I'm touching the wall and it still works?
But you need to keep it challenging, remember...

And I did tell you exactly how to wall jump!


1. JUMP towards a wall

2. Move the analog stick towards the direction you want to go, and RIGHT after that press the jump button.

3. Don't do it too fast!

First, I've proven to myself already that control stick direction is irrelevent. When during the wall contact do I press A? That's the issue! Now SHUT UP and TELL ME! "Too fast"? What's that mean? Jumps are fixed speed. I can't slow down the time it takes for me to jump from one to the next (yet :D), so what does that mean? You mean I don't press A the second I hit the wall?

Just the A button, no stick! I want the things I DON'T know! Stop being yourself!

Anyway, I figured out pretty quickly you weren't going to give me any decent answer, so I just stated nouns verbs and adjectives.
It took longer for you to crack than it did for me.

Perhaps you confused ABF's question for my own? I was asking when I press A when I hit the wall, and that's it.

Never mind anyway, I figured it out myself. I did the opposite of what you said and did it the INSTANT I touch the wall with no control stick touching and it worked perfectly. So, I have the timing down, I hope. Wall jumping sucks...

So um, GW is pushing a return to the moon. Interesting, if he plans on setting up a base for launching to other planets (a lot cheaper to launch on a low gravity place). However, he should push NASA to get to Mars in 15 years. Like, a mandate.

Fools, I told you exactly when to press jump. You press the jump button right after you hit a wall and aim with the stick. Of course you don't need to aim the stick if there's only one direction to jump, but that's not what you were asking. You seemed confused about how to jump in the right direction.

And again, it's not the game's fault that wall jumping is difficult for you. It's your fault. I don't blame Mario Kart if I suck at power sliding.
No, because power sliding is EASY and gives a massive margin of error on Double Dash :D. Now on Super Mario Kart, it's far too hard. To be honest I prefer my challenge to be in the game itself rather than in fighting the controls.
I was using that as an example. I do just fine with power sliding in MKDD.
