Haha, the PS2 version gets a stupid Tekken character and the X-Box version gets Spawn... which could be cool as long as they use Medieval Spawn. It wouldn't make sense if it they use modern-day Spawn since this is a medieval-themed fighter. But no one is as cool as Link.

You know what's cool about this? When I was in Croatia I sent in a game idea to the Official UK Nintendo Magazine (they had contests for cool game ideas) about a weapons-based fighting game that starred Link and all of the characters from the Zelda franchise. This was before Smash Bros. came out, before I even heard about Soul Edge (I'm not sure if I thought up that idea before or after SE came out.. but it doesn't matter since I never knew it existed until a few years later). The idea I had was for a fully 3-D Zelda fighting game where you could move in three dimensions (since at the time all of the 3D fighters played like 2D fighters) and would use various weapons to fight each other. I still remember the image I had in my mind back then. Now it's almost come true!!
That's really cool... and that is definitely the best Link model I've seen. Its a step up above SSB:M, definitely...
And yeah, Link is a way cooler extra than a Tekken character or Spawn.
Oh, and its nice to see another NGC fighting game. Though I'd rather see Namco announce a Ridge Racer NGC game, since I like racing games a lot more than fighters, but still, it is still cool to see. There just isn't much of a chance I'll get it... I actually have never bought a fighting game before (except for SSB and SSB:M, but both of those were gifts), and highly doubt that will change now.
i think it'd be really funny if they used the Kaze no taku Link...

like ABF, i've also never bought a fighting game(except SSB:M...does that count?)...but i think i'll have to pick this up. the first SC was pretty good, although i was pissed that they removed the weapon selection idea from the original...but anyway, having link in there is just the gimmick i need to convince me to buy this.
Wow, this is cool. I remember when we talked about this rumor a long time back. Even then I realized that for Namco to get away with this, they would have to pacify MS and Sony with their own exclusive characters. The Tekken character is interesting, though it seems he shall be the only one who's "soul edge" is his own fists. Spawn looks cool enough, though I was never really a fan of the guy. Oh, and for anyone complaining about him looking modern or whatever, isn't time travel easily possible for demonic/angelic entities? It seems the Link they picked was the OOT/MM Link, in adult form. Now then, I wonder what stories these three will have? I suspect that Link either wants to destroy the evil sword (if the game's story still revolves around a corrupting sword of darkness), or take it for himself and master it (like he did with the evil mask of darkness in MM, though I do wonder whether or not that mask corrupted him or not...). Spawn is likely still trying to keep himself from rolling into a ball and having a huge pity party about how tortured and lost he is I think. Meanwhile, the Tekken guy likely confused these battles for a tournament and is fighting under false pretences.

However, for those like me, there is a slight problem. Here's three new characters, likey having totally different moves and styles of fighting, and I have to pick one because I can't just buy all three versions. It is likely though that maybe each of these three is just a different "skin" for an existing character, like Link for Sophia's kid (forget her name, the sword and shield girl), or Spawn for Asteroth (or the other ax using guy), or the Tekken fellow for...well I can't really think of anyone in the original that didn't use a weapon.
Well considering the fact that Link uses all of his trademark moves in the game, it's pretty obvious that it's not just a skin swipe.

And using modern-day Spawn in stupid. Time travel? What's wrong with you, boy? Medieval Spawn would be perfect for SC. He has the armour, he has the swords, and he would look perfect in the game. But instead they use the stupid modern-day Spawn and give him a bix axe, which he never uses in the comics.
I hadn't read anything about Link using all his trademark moves, so that's news to me.

As for Spawn, I really don't know much about him, I mean, at all. That goes to most people. Fans may have qualms over him for some reason, like yours, but for the most part I do believe they HAD to keep him in his most recognizable costume. I figured time travel had to be possible for him to even have a middle ages form anyway, since what little I do know about him is that he was a modern era soldier or something who died in a fire, thus preventing him from having lived in that time save for some time travel gimic. Anyway, this is a fictional world anyway, so why can't he be wearing whatever he wants? He, Link, and the Tekken fellow don't even belong in the story. That's especially true for Link, who lives in a fictional world that isn't even supposed to resemble Earth.

You know, I do believe Namco will release a second version of the SC2 arcade game, but with all 3 exclusive characters added, so that people can face them off against each other.
Woah! That's awesome!

I remember when the rumor was floating around, then Namco [I think] said it was false. I wonder if at the time the rumor was false and they have since gone back into the game and made the changes.
If it was false at the time, it would take a lot of reconsidering on Namco's part to say "hey, since some rumor mill seems to enjoy the idea, why don't we get in a huge and complicated talk with 3 different companies to get some of their mascot characters in this game?". No, I do believe this was true at the time as well.

Didn't you look at any of ign's screen shots? ... That's weird. They took those down for some reason. Well anyhow, here's what they said about Link:

Quote:On GameCube, the exclusive character is, as IGNcube previously reported, Nintendo's own Link from the famous Legend of Zelda series. The first screenshots show him using the spin attack, upward and downward jabs, in addition to a number of other signature moves -- even his bow! So, it seems he may have all his own unique moves, which is very good news.

I stopped reading Spawn comics a few years ago, but I still know a lot about him. They had the perfect opportunity to use medieval Spawn in SC II, but instead they use the modern-day Spawn who looks out of place in the game. Link actually looks like he could live in that time period. Here's a picture of medieval Spawn:

You see? He still looks a lot like modern-day Spawn, but more fitting for something like Soul Calibur.
I guess he kinda does... Actually, regardless he'd still have his NAME to give away who he is, so he'd be like Cloud's very different look in Kingdom Hearts.

Anyway, I thought you said he never uses an axe. Seems that action figure is equipped with one... You know though, he MAY be able to change shape during the course of the fighting, like when he changes stances. Also, if you have a problem with the weapon, it seems they have the ability to gain new weapons and such during play that was in Soul Edge (a game I never played, so I'm not sure if it only allowed cooler versions of the character's equipped weapon or actually let you get different kinds of weapons). He doesn't look too out of place when you consider the motly crew of demonic other characters in the game (hmm, Ganondorf would also be a good fit, especially if they gave him some smaller versions of the double curved blades he has in Ganon form) like Inferno, Asteroth, and the rest of what I lovlingly refer to as "the freaks" of the game.

Oh, and as it turns out, I was wrong. The Tekken fellow who's name I forget does have weapons. He uses his metal bracelets.
Link also uses his Boomerang and Bombs, from what the movie showed.

I always meant to pick up SC for DC, but when I first heard this report I decided to wait for SCII instead. It's gonna be great!
My friend can't decide between the XBox version or the GCN version, though my frined is a Spawn fan. Anyway, I'll make up my friend's mind by getting the GCN version myself, so then my friend will just get the other one and we can just occasionally trade. Now I just need to get another friend to get the PS2 version.
I can't decide between the GCN version and the PS2 version myself.

Go Tekken!!
DJ:

No no, I said that the modern-day Spawn never used an axe. And Spawn can't change his shape. He can use his cape as a weapon though, but I doubt that Namco will spend much time trying to do something as complex as that.
I could have sworn in that movie I saw a while back that he used his armor to change his appearence or something. If they messed around with giving Link his bombs and arrows and all his signature moves, I'm sure that thing where he stabs the enemies with his cape (it's CLOTH, how can it stab? Maybe Master Asia knows, he kills giant robots with a frickin' SASH) isn't that hard to pull off by just adding it. Oh, and why CAN'T modern era spawn use some demonic axe?
...

The movie.

The movie was ass, okay? Don't reference the movie anymore, please. In the Mario Bros. movie Toad was a giant dinosaur monster with a really tiny head! How accurate was that?
Well okay then, so it's not accurate. How was I to know? Chill...

Aside from that and the few episodes of the animated series I saw, I know nothing about Spawn. Is it REALLY that much of a sin that him in his modern day suit is using an axe instead of his modern weapons? Oh right, his weapons are demonic, so I guess using ANY weapons would be a sin for him, but you know what I mean. I mean, if he at least used it, even in his medievil outfit, it still fits right? So then, you saying his cape and armor can't change shape? He can't like grow spikes out of his gauntlets or turn his cape into a spear?
No.

And it's not a different suit; medieval Spawn is a completely different character from a different time period.
Okay, I asked "So then, you saying his cape and armor can't change shape? He can't like grow spikes out of his gauntlets or turn his cape into a spear?", to which you respond "no". Um, I'm a little confused by that response. Do you mean "No, I am not saying that" or "No he can't do that"?

Anyway, different character eh? Well if that's the case, I think it's obvious why they picked the normal spawn, and it should be to you as well. They picked the main character from the franchise (Spawn is the main character, right?) as opposed to a sub character. That's why they picked Link instead of Sheik or Ganondorf. As for Tekken, I haven't really played that game, except like once in the arcade, so I have no idea if that old guy is the main character or not. However, if that series is like most fighting games, there likely is no main character.

They likely gave that Spawn the older Spawn's axe because, if I get this Spawn thing straight, there is like a different spawn in each era or something right? Or, are there a total of just two spawns, or is this medieval guy just some guy imitating the real Spawn? I'm not sure which cliche to use here. If he is just a new spawn in the lines of spawns (yeesh, I don't think I've used the world spawn so often since I last played an FPS I can't remember the name of where I died like, every 5 seconds), then can't he just use the same basic powers to generate an axe that the older one used? I mean, how does he get all those other demonic weapons? Can't he just call forth that axe? You could also just think of him as having been given the axe by that other guy. I mean, unless Spawn is quoted as saying something like "I shall never use an axe, for they are the weapons of cowards", then I can see no reason why giving him an axe is some insult. Maybe they wanted to give him the axe to connect him to that era?
I meant "no" as in "no, he cannot do that stuff with his cape and armour".

I'll try to spare you of the details, but basically there is a different Spawn for each time period, kinda like the different Links in all of the Zelda games. Kinda.

The modern-day Spawn does not use an axe. He's using it in SC since the game is a weapons-based fighter. But it really would have made more sense to use Medieval Spawn.

You have a real knack for taking my little comments and blowing them up into big topics, DJ. And to that I say: :hammer:
What I wanna know is why you couldn't just say "yeah that's right" and just end it. It takes two to get into an argument mister.
So you're just as guilty as I am.

And where should I have said that?
Jin is the main character in Tekken

Followed by his father Kazuya, and his Grandfather Heihachi.

Although, it could be argued that Heihachi is the main character, given that he is the man responsible for the tournaments, and it's his empire people are after. But the real story comes from Kazuya and Heihachi trying to harness the power of the Devil gene (formerly in Kazuya) which is in Jin's body.

It's really a big 3-way. And quite an interesting storyline.
Rolleyes Sure it is. There there, Marky. It's all right. We still love you.
?
Okay...so Spawn can...
...
I won't bother.

I've been going through an excessively long fighting draught after the N64 era. There was not one decent fighting game (sans SSB) on that system. Soul Calibre was one other reasons I was two feet from getting a Dreamcast, so I'm actually looking forward to SCII with quite a bit of anticipation. Link just sweetens the deal. I've seen a movie of his trademark moves, and, to my knowledge, Namco has included the following trademark Link items/techniques:

Master Sword (duh)
Bow and arrow
Bomb
Spin move
Boomerang
Please sign this, everybody. :D
Argh! Petitions!

Hello, and welcome to...two years ago?
Hahahaha! I want to be the Cardboard Tube Samurai! I love those things , they are one of the best parts of Christmas!
I still have some cardboard tubes for posters, but they aren't exactly a well known facet of Christmas around here. Massive piles of styrofoam however, are.

And another thing, is anyone else surprised at how Christmas can clean up after itself? It's amazing really. I think that's how you know it's Christmas.
We always use up at least one roll of wrapping paper, so there is always a new sword to play with. :D And I make sure to slash and hack at various family members and pets until I have mastered the sword forms or it breaks, whichever comes first.
