Aw crap, no Mario Kart 64...

From IGN:

Quote:September 09, 2003 - Last month IGNcube reported that Nintendo would release a bonus disc for those who pre-order the GameCube racer Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Our initial story included a promotional piece of art for the bonus offer, which stated that the disc would include playable preview software of GCN games.
Today Nintendo confirmed the offer and offered a detail or two more.

Nintendo stated by press release: "The offer gives customers who reserve an advanced copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for Nintendo GameCube a chance to test drive a bonus preview disc loaded with movies and demos of upcoming Nintendo GameCube titles. The special offer is effective immediately at select retailers."

Unfortunately, Nintendo did not offer any specifics as to what demos or previews would be featured on the disc or when gamers who pre-order Double Dash!! would receive it. However, the company did at least state that those details would be forthcoming in the weeks to follow.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is scheduled to ship for GameCube on November 17. The title, a sequel to the hit Mario Kart 64, features classic Nintendo mascots in tricked-out karts -- all of them ready to race and do street battle with one another. The title will retail for $49.99, according to Nintendo.

We'll have more on the game and the bonus disc soon. Stay tuned.

That's still cool, but I was hoping for a MK64 port. Guess I'll have to get the game back from my nephew...
It's like I said, but, no, you went on believing your foolish fantasies anyway!! Well, who's laughing now! Huh? That's right it's me...wait...this isn't funny at all!! Oh well, I'll still preorder it anyway for the demos.
I wonder what demos they'll include? There aren't any first or second-party Nintendo games coming out this holiday (aside from MK), so it'll have to be third-party stuff.
That's too bad... less of a chance it'll change the fact that I've still never preordered a game before, then. Of course, I never was really planning on getting Mario Kart ASAP anyway...
Maybe they'll have a demo of Twin Snakes.
I never expected it, nor really desired it. Mario Kart Double Dash is like Mario Kart 64 PLUS anyway. That would be like including Metal Gear Solid original with Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes. Yes, I would like it if they DID include it, more is always better, but I can live without it very easily.
DD is to MK64 as Twin Snakes is to MGS?? That's just crazy talk! Twin Snakes is a remake of MGS while Double Dash is a sequel to MK64 with completely different tracks, new characters, and the new two-person racing system. Saying that DD is simply MK64 PLUS is like saying that Mario 3 is just Mario Bros. PLUS.
Yeah, completely wrong. MKDD is a sequel, which is different from a remake, obviously...

It'd be like including Mario Kart in Mario Kart 64. :)
Yes it's a sequal, but as with many games of this type (small games based mostly on multiplayer) the goal is basically to include everything from the last one and then include a bunch more. It's like Smash Bros and Smash Bros Melee. Why include the first game when the second does everything the first one did and more? YEah, that's a better example.
It's nothing like SSB and SSB Melee. SSB Melee was literally just a graphical update of SSB, while Double Dash adds a good deal to the Mario Kart formula.
SSBM was more than just a graphical update! It was a full-blown sequel, it added more to the series than most sequels do!
It was a graphical update with new levels and characters. The gameplay was still the same.
Give me a list of sequels that don't do that! You won't find very many.

SSBM had better graphics, orchestrated music, many new characters and levels, new modes, trophies, challenge mini-games, and a story mode. Sure the central gameplay style is still the same, but everything else changed!!
It's different enough to be called a sequel I suppose, but the differences really are small.
Lots of "sequels" get by with less.
But this is Nintendo we're talking about! They're supposed to be better than the other people!
SSBM was also faster [in terms of framerate] than SSB. It makes a big difference.

Anyway, this doesn't even have anything to do with the topic. I will agree with you that Double Dash DOES change the central gameplay, not making it completely different, but there's now an emphasis on teamwork that wasn't in past installments.
Hmm, since one person is still controlling the kart, is it really emphesized or is that just a mix and match various powers type of thing?
One person controlls the kart while the other uses powerups and weapons, so there is teamwork in that regard.
I don't think there's a co-op mode. One player controls both players per cart.
Yeah like OB1 said, though I do believe GR reminded me that, in fact, Nintendo did say something about a co-op mode in the game.
SSB:M just a graphical update? Uh... not at all! It added a lot of stuff to the game, far more than most fighting game sequels add!

Just because its Nintendo doesn't mean I give them totally different standards for making sequels.

as for MKDD... it does look more different than SSB and SSBM.
The game still played almost identical to the N64 Smash Bros.
It was close, but there were some sizable differences... or at least I sure noticed some big ones (for a fighting game). Kirby was crippled in Melee, throws were made a lot harder to do and are less effective, smashes are easier to do, more special moves, a lot more characters, new levels, the adventure mode, etc...
Very minor gameplay changes.

But then again you're used to Capcom games so they must be HUGE changes for you.
Very minor? No way! And I am not going by "Capcom" standards but by the standards of the genre. Now... it is a FACT that the standards of the fighting game genre for sequels are very low... but even if they were higher, SSB:M adds a lot to the game! I see no way to call it anything other than a sequel. Not with that much added.
Each Virtua Figher sequel adds a ton to the series.
True, but that isn't exactly normal in this genre...
The leap from Soul Blade to Soul Calibur was huge...
I thought SSB to SSBM was huge. Sure, not many moves, but games types? That's gameplay as much as anything else. The mission mode, adventure mode, coin battle, point battle, and the various new gameplay mode like stamina mode (totally changing how you fight I might add) and giant mode are NOT "minor additions" as you label them.
There are more modes, but the fighting itself is the same.
So? Mario games played the same from Mario 1 to Mario World (excepting Mario 2), so with that reasoning you could say they didn't really update that much with that series either, but they did, with far more abilities and moves and all manner of different levels, things which they also did with SSBM.
No, its not the same! While it wasn't changed dramatically, it definitely changed. More moves changes things... as well as changing the feel of some of the existing characters, and totally changing the throwing and smash systems... those are dramatic changes! In SSB I almost never did any smashes (I got that 'smashless' award many times), while in Melee I do them all the time... and with throws its the opposite... no, the gameplay changed a lot more than you say.
Yes indeed, and power shielding exists now. If you are to say the gameplay of SSBM is barely any change over SSB, then MKDD is barely any change over MK64. It IS different, far upgraded. Of course, with this in mind there's not much of a reason to really want to play the last one when the new one exists. I know I'll barely touch F-Zero X once I get F-Zero GX. It's not that the last one is suddenly bad or something, but with this... style of game, the multiplayer party type, you tend to ignore the last one when the update comes out. Like how all my friends and I kinda abandoned Goldeneye (an awesome game of course) when Perfect Dark was released, and how we will abandon Halo when Halo 2 is released, and of course how we abandon each of the old Mario Party games when the new one comes out.
Mario is a very different situation because the game is all about course design, while Smash Bros. is all about the fighting system. Minor tweaks and changes here and there do not make for a drastically different game. The changes from Mario Kart 64 to Double Dash are far greater than the changes from Smash Bros. to SSB Melee.
Heh, looks like I got out just in time. :D
But they aren't minor! I just can't see any possible way of characterizing them that way... they change the gameplay a lot! "Minor"? That just doesn't make a shred of sense as a characterization.
I'm talking about the gameplay, ABF. The fighting.
The fighting isn't the only thing that's gameplay. Levels, modes of play, that's ALL pure gameplay, totally and completely.

*clap* I'm out, and I'm so right that if you respond it magically proves it by some illogical method, so there!
What a surprise, DJ leaving a debate. Rolleyes

So you're saying that even though the fighting is identical to the last game, SSB Melee is "totally" different from SSB? So I guess the Mario Party series is just one huge innovative sequel after another, right?

Oh boy.
This isn't a debate at all. Show me one single logical argument, even from me! It's just saying "yes it is" "no it isn't" "yes it is" over and over with not a single shred of intelligent discussion. Why should I stay in this argument with not a bit of "debate" to it? Get a little bit better at this whole debating thing, totally leaving yourself out of it (meaning, no "I should know" or "I'm more qualified to know this so just trust me") for example, and I'll stay. I kinda doubt that'll happen though. You know, when I posted the "rules of debate", they all reflect you and ABF.

This whole idiotic idea that leaving a debate is somehow an act of cowardice is caveman talk. "Only a fool takes up a fool's argument" after all.
Totally different? No, its based on the same gameplay, of course... but it changes it more than enough to be called a full sequel. It adds a bunch of new modes and stuff and some gameplay changes... and a lot of new characters, too...
Oh please your Holy Rightousness, tell us little people how to debate properly!

We're so sorry that our methods of debate don't hold up to your high standards, even though you've never shown any solid debating skills during your entire stay at Tendo City!

We all bow down to you!!

Rolleyes
Now that's all I wanted. Wait, is that sarcasm? Should I take it that every single point you made was sarcastic?
Until you actually prove to us that you can debate properly, we don't need you chiming in every single day about how our debate aren't up to your so-called high standards. It just makes you like even more of a jackass.
Yeesh, someone's cranky...
Don't say anything if you don't plan on backing it up.
That's an odd philosophy... I mean, some things are NOT worth fighting for ya know. Do you start fights all the time over "honor" like some street punk by any chance? You need to know when it's smarter to back down. It's often a lot less honorable TO defend your viewpoint, MUCH less honorable in fact. It's called "turning the other cheek". Do you believe that by not defending your point you are somehow admitting defeat? Come on now. The challenger has no right to determine what constitutes defeat unless you agree to those terms, like "if you don't say anything it means I'm right". Such a statement is pure idoicy. They have no authority to make such a rule after all, so you can totally ignore it and it won't mean a thing.
I completely agree with OB1 about this. DJ, you get so, so, incredibly annoying... saying things that we disagree with and want to hear your reasons for and then refusing to argue, making it sound like trying to understand why someone is saying something and understanding what the reasons for their opinion are is bad, refusing to even ATTEMPT to defend your arguements, and then essentially saying that you can argue great but we do not deserve the honor of being graced by the presence of your stellar debating skills! Uhh... NO.

Fights? Uhh... debates are DEBATES. Fighting is totally, completely different... I wouldn't fight people, but debating? Sure!

And there is never anything wrong with defending a viewpoint. Especially not the kind of viewpoints we are discussing here. You have something seriously wrong if you think that there is actually a problem with discussing, say, your favorite games (a subject you refuse to discuss, or even comment about others' lists), etc, etc, etc...

Oh yes, and when you refuse to defend a viewpoint I would certainly say that you are, in effect, admitting defeat. Definitely.

DJ... you just annoy us SO much with this attitude... OB1 said that you're more annoying than me or Darunia, and I can certainly see why.
I mean it DJ, coming in and "talking trash" and then leaving is a very spineless act. You almost never have anything to back up your arguments with, and when asked by myself or someone else to back up your claims you go off on your "backing up what you say is actually the cowardly thing to do since having empty words is much better!" rant.
